According to Buster Olney, the Yankees have claimed right-handed corner utility man Russ Canzler off waivers. I’ve written about Canzler before as a guy the Yankees should consider for his right-handed power and ability to play all four corners. Seems likely he’ll join Matt Diaz as a guy to compete for a bench/platoon job in New York.
Canzler hasn’t had many chances in the big leagues, but he’s put up good numbers in the minors, hitting .289/.365/.508 through nearly a thousand at-bats in the pitcher friendly International League.
UPDATE: Just checked Canzler’s minor league numbers. He had fairly significant splits in Double-A in 2010 — good against both, but a 1.013 OPS vs. lefties and an .899 OPS vs. righties — but the splits have been fairly insignificant the past two years in Triple-A. His left and right splits were practically identical in 2011, and his vRHP OPS was within two points of his vLHP OPS last year.
Also, heard from one source who said Canzler is solid in the field. The source said he’d seen him at different spots and didn’t think he was particularly bad anywhere.
