Lance Berkman won’t be returning to the Yankees. He’ll be going back to Texas.
The longtime Astros standout has agreed to a one-year, $11-million deal with the Rangers. Ken Rosenthal reports that the deal includes a vesting option for 2014.
Berkman would have fit as a regular DH for the Yankees — he would have fit especially well if he can still play the outfield, which seems uncertain after last year’s knee problems — and the Yankees reportedly had some interest, but the appeal of staying home in Texas might have been too much to overcome. And the idea of a vesting option might have been too risky for a team that’s been incredibly cautious about committing to 2014 contracts.
