A few Monday notes: Cervelli, Soriano and Berkman

Just a few quick Yankees notes from today…
• Francisco Cervelli had a minor whiplash scare while playing winter ball. He was brought to Tampa for tests, but Brian Cashman told ESPNNewYork that Cervelli is fine and going back to Venezuela to finish the season.
• Bob Klapisch reports that Scott Boras asked the Yankees if they’d be interested in bringing Rafael Soriano back on a one-year deal. Klapisch says the offer was “flatly denied.” After Soriano opted out and turned down a qualifying offer, it’s hard to imagine the Yankees bringing him back unless it’s a significant discount. Cashman has said he’s not looking for additional bullpen help.
• Before Lance Berkman signed with the Rangers, the Yankees showed some interest in bringing him back to New York as a designated hitter. Two sources have told Ken Rosenthal that the Yankees made an offer. Another source says the two sides simply talked.

He should have taken the Yankees offer and secured a job in 2013 and possibly beyond.
Klapisch: Yankees “did think about” Hamilton, but decided “it wasn’t worth the risk, it wasn’t worth the money, it wasn’t worth the years, his health issues, his off the field issues, the Yankees just couldn’t pull the trigger.”

Too bad Hairston wants a multiyear deal. And love that .317 on base vs. lefties w/the .550 SLG. That is so hairy monster that Cash might go multiples…

Hairston would be a nice addition but my questions would be: Jonny Gomes and Cody Ross both got multi year deals for good money. Neither of those players are as good as Hairston, so why would he settle for the type of one year deals that the Yankees are offering players? And if the Yankees are willing to offer Hairston a comparable deal, why? Wouldn’t it have made more sense to offer that kind of deal to an every day player rather than a backup?

The Yankees want the draft pick/draft dollars they’ll get when Soriano signs elsewhere more than they want him back, no matter the contract.
