Saban leans on Rivera as example of championship focus

[2]There’s a football game tonight. Championship of the BCS tournament, or something like that.

And, of course, the Yankees somehow got dragged into this.

“We just watched a video of Mariano Rivera,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said yesterday. [3] “And he talked about when he struggled at some time in his career because he was trying to be a perfectionist. And that when he’s in the bullpen, he sees the crowd, he hears the crowd… but when he runs out and they hand him the ball, he’s got one focus; he’s not worried about the crowd, he’s not worried about any of the external factors. One focus: Three outs. ‘How am I going to get three outs?’ I think a team’s ability to do that, to stay focused on the things that are going to affect the outcome of the game, are critical in games like this.”

If you want to teach you athletes about focus, I’m not sure there’s a better example than Mo.

As for the game itself, I really couldn’t care less who wins. I have a lot of friends who are huge Notre Dame fans — legitimate fans, not folks who have jumped on, off and now back on the bandwagon — but some of them are so obnoxious about it (I’m looking at you, Cory Welker!) that I’m not sure I can handle a Notre Dame championship.
