The World Baseball Classic rosters will be announced on Thursday, but a few names are already leaking. Andy Pettitte and Mark Teixeira are among them.
Pettitte will be back with former Yankees manager Joe Torre, who will manage the U.S. team. Seems like a cool situation for Pettitte, especially at this stage of his career. Also seems fair to wonder whether it makes sense for a 40-year-old to add this sort of spring workload, but I’m honestly not sure whether the workload will be significantly different than a regular spring training. And obviously Pettitte hasn’t pitched many innings the past three years.
As for Teixeira, Bryan Hoch makes a good point: Given his history of slow regular season starts, perhaps this is a new way of trying to avoid those April struggles.
