Phil Hughes avoids arbitration with one-year deal
The Yankees just announced that Phil Hughes has agreed to a one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. The terms of the deal were not announced, but this is Hughes’ third and final year of arbitration and MLBTradeRumors — which has an awfully good formula for predicting this sort of thing — estimated a $5.7 million deal for Hughes.
Dave Robertson, Joba Chamberlain and Boone Logan are the Yankees remaining arbitration eligible players without a contract.
UPDATE: A source says Hughes got $7.15 million.

Let the Nationals worry about Boone Logan’s arbitration and deal him for Michael Morse!
Good. That’s one less thing to be concerned about for now.
Too bad it wasn’t a 3 or 4 year extension.
Wow, total WTF at the Manti Te’o fake girlfriend thing. I mean, why? Why the hell would anyone even orchestrate something like that? That dude cannot be mentally stable. I wonder if this will hurt his draft stock at all. It would sure make me a little more wary. What a lunatic.

Half serious speculation – maybe he’s gay and made up a girlfriend so that his very religious family would think he’s not gay. Then the lie got out of control obviously.
“It went great,” a source with knowledge of the procedure told Newsday. “They reshaped the bone, they repaired the labrum. They were worried about the cartilage, the arthritis, it was minimal. They dissipated the cyst. Dr. Kelly said it went great and he should be on track, as long as he rehabs properly, for right after the All-Star game.”

Thanks, pat. If true, great news on Alex.

Will this adversely impact his potential election to the Baseball Hall of Fame?

Depends on if he’s a top or bottom. According to sources (DONNYBROOK), voters are biased towards tops and have a very low opinion of bottoms. Mike Piazza was a catcher after all …
Now if he’s a power bottom that’s an entirely different discussion.
Pat-
Thanks for the link. When it was first announced last month that he was going to get “resurfacing” of the femoral head, I couldn’t understand such a quick recovery to play baseball, as hip resurfacing involves placing a new metal femoral head. Maybe I heard that wrong.
I attached this link a few times today on Dr Bryan Kelly’s technique for Femoro Acetabular Impingement Surgery:
http://bryankellymd.com/
I’ll guess 6.1 million for Hughes
Blake-
Another 16-13 year with an ERA 4.23, 35 homers allowed and righties batting .308 with .928 OPS. If he performs at that level do the Yankees let him walk?
http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/.....hil-hughes
It may come down to whether he provides reach-arounds.
ESPN crawl update: San Diego State — presumably located in or near San Diego, CA, close to the Pacific Ocean — will remain in the Mountain West athletic conference and not move to the Big East athletic conference.
Also, ESPN is on the Chip Kelly story right now but they’re about to break to the Manti- Te’O story, and they’re flashing this:
“Breaking News: Manti Te’o's Girlfriend Did Not Exist — Full Story Ahead”
I have at least one ex-girlfriend who probably wishes I didn’t exist, so either she or I can sympathize.
Hughes got $7.15 million .. kinda high, no?
FeinsandNYDN
Two sources say Phil Hughes’ 2013 deal with the Yankees is for $7.15 million.
7.15M per Feinsand
Haha apparently Te’o is trying to say that someone pranked him. I thought he was on the phone with this girlfriend for 8 hours at a time. That’s one elaborate prank I guess!
Hughes needs to have a break out season or it’s time to let him walk
I don’t think the Yankees can settle for mediocre in 2013.
The team needs Hughes to leave no doubt he is a top tier pitcher
and a Yankee for life.

A tick yea….not terrible though.
Trader,
If he repeats his 2012 then I think they will let him go yes because I think some team will pay him pretty nicely

So Te’o's girlfriend was about as legit as Notre Dames football team?

Yep or as I saw on twitter:
Stephen Douglas ?@CRM_Stephen
Manti Te’o wasn’t missing tackles in the National Championship, he was hugging his girlfriend.

Patrick,
I agree and this is one of the only explanations that I could come up with, that maybe he’s gay and it had something to do with covering that up. I mean not much else makes a ton of sense.

Some writer is already starting an Arod is addicted to pain killers story
@jonmorosi: #Mariners close to acquiring Mike Morse, sources tell @Ken_Rosenthal and me.
Screw!

He’s on horse tranquilizers in that picture
Cashman is in a vodka induced comma lying on his office floor after dying from a broke leg on Oregan Trail
Blake-
Probably Morse for one of the Mariners top lefty pitching prospects
Mariners were also close to getting Upton.
Before you freak out on Cash lets see if a) a deal happens and b) what Seattle gives up for him. It’s possible he is going to Seattle because they grossly overpaid for him.
That roster makes no sense btw…
@AdamKilgoreWP: Sources: Nats trade Michael Morse to M’s, get back prospect A.J. Cole in three-team deal. http://t.co/AXG2jQcm
Jaso to Oakland and AJ Cole to the Nats
I guess Jaso was available after all…..
Rosy told me Jaso was not available.
I told her he was for the right players.
Unfortunately they weren’t ours.
So Jack Z basically traded Jaso for Mike morse? That’s terrible…..
@DCameronFG: Morse isn’t even obviously a better hitter than Jaso, even before factoring in position, age, handedness, salary…
Have to figure Seattle would have given more than Jaso for Granderson
Basically the Nats trade morse to get AJ Cole back….so that’s a pretty good return for a year of Morse. Nice job by Rizzo….the trade makes no sense for Seattle though
Rizzo worked it again here…. Aside from the Strasburg mess he’s killed it the last couple of years
