Yankees bring back Reegie Corona

According to Baseball America’s latest minor league transactions – and confirmed by a team source — the Yankees have re-signed infielder Reegie Corona.
A speedy player capable of handling second or short, Corona came up through the Yankees system and was actually taken by the Mariners in the Rule 5 draft all the way back in 2008. He didn’t stick, and the Yankees wound up adding him to their own 40-man roster the following offseason. Corona was on the 40-man in 2010 when a Triple-A collision left him with a serious shoulder injury, which cost him the rest of that year, all of 2011 and — eventually — his roster spot.
I can’t find any evidence of Corona playing anywhere last year, but he did play eight games in Venezuela this winter. All of his time in the field came at second base, and he only got 18 at-bats, but that’s a pretty good indication that he’s at least healthy enough to play again.
Probably not the kind of move worth restructuring the big league depth chart, but Corona might provide some minor league depth. The Double-A infield looks fairly thin this year, so Corona might be able to help out there and show whether he can still play.
The other names listed for the Yankees in this week’s minor league transactions are names we already knew about: Bobby Wilson, Matt Diaz, Jim Miller (outright after clearing waivers) and Jayson Nix (also after clearing waivers).
As for other familiar names: The Marlins have signed catcher Craig Tatum, infielder Nick Green and outfielder Austin Kearns; and the Orioles have re-signed catcher Chase Weems and corner utility man Steve Pearce.
