Jeter plans to start running in spring training; says “There’s no need to rush”

Last night, MLB Network aired a one-on-one interview between Harold Reynolds and Derek Jeter. The video is embedded above — should be anyway, assuming I did this correctly — or you can follow this link to the MLB Network site.

A few highlights…

Jeter on the “Derek Eater” picture on the cover of the Post
“Somebody had sent me the picture. I thought, you know how sometimes they’ll take someone’s picture and they’ll say, ‘This is what they’re gonna look like 50 years from now.’ You know what I’m saying? So, I thought it was a joke, and then they said, ‘No, this is on the front page of the paper.’ So, that’s how I found out about it. … You start looking at yourself, you know, because everyone was telling me it looked like I had lost weight. Then you’re like, ‘Man, are they lying to me?’ But no, they had fun with it.”

Jeter on his broken ankle in October
“I felt it snap so I knew I wasn’t playing the next day. … Not this time. I knew this time something was wrong with it. It was two times in my career I knew I wasn’t playing, one was my shoulder, and this was the second time.”

Jeter on his recovery and his preparation for Opening Day
“It feels good now. Right where I feel it should be. … My target’s the season. My target’s always the season. Spring Training is so long. You start playing games. You don’t play all the games to begin with. You start playing a little bit more towards the end of Spring. I haven’t talked to our trainers, I don’t know what my schedule is like, but I’ll be ready for the regular season. … I’ll start running and doing all the other things in Spring Training. There’s no need to rush.”

Jeter on the Yankees fairly quiet winter
“I like when we bring teams back. We were pretty successful in the regular season last year. We won the most games in the American League, which didn’t translate into the playoffs, but we had a good team and we have an opportunity to bring a lot of guys back. We’re going to lose a few important parts of our team, but a lot of the guys are back and I’m always excited at this time of year.”

Jeter on how long he will continue to play
“I never have, ever in my career, sat around and thought about years from now. I always focus on one particular year and, right now, I’m focused on 2013. I’m rehabbing my ankle, getting ready for Opening Day. I can’t sit here and tell you. I take it one year at a time.”

A “sleep over” with A-Rod would be hilarious. One guy hobbling around with a bum wheel, the using a walker courtesy of a bum hip. The “Odd Couple” Yankee style.

  3. AAA January 23rd, 2013 at 3:17 pm

Olney reporting Braves are back in on Upton and in a big way. Calls them the likely front runner.

  4. DONNYBROOK January 23rd, 2013 at 3:22 pm

I find it hard to believe the D Backs would trade both J Upton and Kubel. If I’m Towers, I deal Kubel, (even if I get lowballed), and hang onto J Upton. Maybe I get a better return on Upton at the Trade Deadline, or maybe Upton has a slam-bang 2013 for me.

    =====================================

Probably one or the other, though the D’backs could go with an Eaton, Parra, Ross outfield were they to deal both.. Kubel probably doesn’t bring ‘em much. Upton does. If the Braves offer is as solid as is being suggested to Olney, then Upton probably goes.

  6. DONNYBROOK January 23rd, 2013 at 3:29 pm

Both Upton’s on the same team. ???? And BJ already has an attitude.

  7. Brian January 23rd, 2013 at 3:29 pm

There was a column in today’s local paper, the AZ Republic, which basically said Upton w/b traded, but that AZ wouldn’t get back fair value. Laid out his stats the past few seasons and compared him with other players and the columnist questioned why the team seems so aggressive in trying to trade him.

    Mister mick,
It would be fun to have (most) of you all. Google “Plantation B&Bs Georgia”. You’ll find us at the top. I’ll throw in a BBQ, too.

  9. MTU January 23rd, 2013 at 3:37 pm

    Brian-

Because the Owner is a loose canon and doesn’t like JU.

    Thats’ why.

    ;)

  10. DONNYBROOK January 23rd, 2013 at 3:39 pm

Hal should get smart, and buy Upton at the discount price. THEN, deal Cano.

  11. tomingeorgia January 23rd, 2013 at 3:40 pm

    mick,
We could schedule it when the River Dogs come to Augusta. That’s what GB7 and I were going to do.

  12. blake January 23rd, 2013 at 3:43 pm

My guess is the Braves are offering something like : Teheran, Venters, Gattis, and Amhed…..or something. Don’t think they’ll deal Simmons

  13. AAA January 23rd, 2013 at 3:44 pm

Hal should get smart, and buy Upton at the discount price. THEN, deal Cano.

    ======================

Wouldn’t count on the discount price. Mariners offer was not a discount by any stretch and if the Braves put Teheran in the offer, they can make it comparable with Seattle’s.

  14. blake January 23rd, 2013 at 3:45 pm

Braves always made the most sense IF Towers like Teheran nearly as much as Walker…..if he does then that’s probably where he’s going

Agreed. That offer would put it in the ballpark with what Seattle presented.

You were on it all along.

    Good work Skyfall.

  17. blake January 23rd, 2013 at 3:53 pm

    MTU,

hasn’t happened yet….and hopefully Cashman will swoop in and offer Cervelli to break the deal :)

  18. UnKnown January 23rd, 2013 at 3:54 pm

Derek gives awesome interviews. He is the best I have ever seen at it.

  19. comet January 23rd, 2013 at 3:55 pm

    Is there a pool?

    comet,
It’s the one listed above that! And that place is indeed gorgeous.

  21. MTU January 23rd, 2013 at 4:02 pm

    Blake-

It always seemed like a likely destination. A good match.

Yeah. Offering Cervelli should definitely swing things in our favor.

My husband and I stayed here for one night for my husband’s birthday. Tom and Barbara were amazingly welcoming. The rooms are full of old fashioned charm, with delightful furniture and lovely touches, befitting its period. We enjoyed listening to their stories over a glass of wine with cheese in the early evening. We chose to have our dinner there..

Not yet, but I think Teheran + at least 1 other top prospect, & maybe couple lesser. RT @hashtaghector: @ajcbraves any word on braves offer?

I have no affection for the Braves, but if this happens, they’re going to be a blast to watch: J-Hey and J-Up, McCann – maybe BJ picks it up this year. The OF defense also: crazy good.

  32. 4TrainNorth January 23rd, 2013 at 4:31 pm

could be best team in baseball if their rotation performs….not many holes on that club if they get Upton

  43. J. Alfred Prufrock January 23rd, 2013 at 4:42 pm

This is just the weirdest situation, that they’ve been openly willing to trade him.

That Towers has been attributed as saying they’ll not accept a lesser package than Seattle offered.

What is wrong with Towers, any way? How is it he can’t convince the owner, no matter how fortified against, that keeping Upton is probably the best answer? Makes you wonder if Towers would be much of an upgrade as a GM here. How do you come to be actively trying to trade a player like that?

    Weird.

  44. MTU January 23rd, 2013 at 4:44 pm

    JAP-

No it’s not. The owner is a loose canon and wants him gone.

That’s been obvious for a while. Ever since he called JU out in public.

  45. blake January 23rd, 2013 at 4:45 pm

I was never as high on that Seattle package as a lot of folks…..it all depended on if Walker turned out to be a frontline starter….and he could bust big time. I remember another “frontline starter” that Seattle traded not too long ago……

  50. J. Alfred Prufrock January 23rd, 2013 at 4:51 pm

    MTU & Shame,

I wonder if there’s been any acrimony between the two over this though?

Does Towers have a backbone? I would have said, ‘dude, you’re asking me to get rid of a guy who can help me win for years. Deal with the guy, or better yet, stay out of it and let me deal with him.’

All this interpersonal stuff these owners and FOs get into; what has Upton done?? Has he killed someone? It’s crazy.

I love that they had their little deal in place for Seattle and that Upton flipped it off. Serves them right.

I’m really asking: what did Upton do to get the “bad attitude” brand??

  53. blake January 23rd, 2013 at 4:55 pm

@Ken_Rosenthal: #Braves deep in young arms that could form basis of potential Upton trade. #Diamondbacks also like Gattis’ power. SS Ahmed another option.

  54. MTU January 23rd, 2013 at 4:56 pm

    JAP-

GM’s generally don’t tell owners what to do. It’s usually the other way round.

For all we know Towers may have said exactly what you said.

When an owner takes a dislike to player they are usually gone.

I absolutely agree about Upton telling them to get lost.

They have yo-yo’ed him around for too long now.

I hope he goes to Atlanta where he wil be wanted and respected. He also has the added bonus of being reunited with his Bro.

I’d bet he has a big year or two left in him at 25.

    ;)

  55. Shame Spencer January 23rd, 2013 at 4:57 pm

JAP – I don’t really know.. but I do know from practical perspective, I disagree with my boss on a fair number of things, but my job ultimately is to do what he tells me. I can’t imagine Towers loved the idea of moving Bauer either.

  59. MTU January 23rd, 2013 at 5:01 pm

    JAP-

From I could tell he did nothing other than not perform up to the owners expectations one season.

The owner said he needed show consistency especially for what he was being paid.

The season in question Upton was injured and since when does a young player perform at a consistently high level.

Guess that dude never heard of development either.

Upton’s manager as well as others supported Upton.

By all accounts he’s a hard worker who may have declined due to an injury, or just a bad season.

Or maybe the hostile atmosphere affected him

Anyway, as Shame termed him the owner is an “Asshat” IMO.

Shame, I thought they thought Bauer was out of shape or something and that it wasn’t limited to the owner?

So what you guys are saying is there’s no tangible anything that Upton has been a bad team guy or has done anything like punch out the 60-year old team secretary or made bigoted slurs or anything like that.

  62. mick January 23rd, 2013 at 5:03 pm

    What did Upton do?

    ————————

Towers very well could have expressed his desire to keep either player.. and the owner disagreed. They could do so respectfully and Towers could still be given an order to follow. Does it do Towers any good to refuse to do what his owner asks of him? His job, on some level, it to carry out the order and still make the team not awful. Which is totally doable in an Upton trade.

  64. blake January 23rd, 2013 at 5:04 pm

If the Yanks don’t get Upton then the Braves are a good place for him to go because 1) its the NL 2) because the Braves can’t keep both he and Heyward so one of them will be available at some point 3) because I like the Braves

  65. J. Alfred Prufrock January 23rd, 2013 at 5:05 pm

If Upton’s “offense” is that he’s smart and opinionated – he seems to be both – then we’re likely not in on him, either.

  66. MTU January 23rd, 2013 at 5:05 pm

    JAP-

I’ve posted the public comments by Kendrick before.

If you want to see them for yourself just google “Kendrick calls out Upton”.

  67. Shame Spencer January 23rd, 2013 at 5:05 pm

JAP – All there are, I think, are some articles where the Dbacks owner (whose name escapes me and it’s annoying the crap out of me right now) called Upton out for not being the player he was the season before (when he was in contention for the MVP). Upton struggled early in the year and the owner called him out in the papers… that was basically it as far as I know. That’s when the work ethic narrative began. Many of his coaches and teammates have said it’s untrue and that he does work hard, in response to the criticism.

  68. coney1 January 23rd, 2013 at 5:06 pm

Doesn’t look like the Yankees have any desire to get better this year

  69. Shame Spencer January 23rd, 2013 at 5:07 pm

    “No it won’t. He’s overrated.”

The guy has had 141 and 129 OPS+ seasons, and he is only entering his age 25 season. So to overrate him probably means one thinks he is an all-time great rather than a really good player.

What are the chances that what the Yankees would likely give up will be better than Upton?

What are the chances that the Yankees will show those prospects the patience to develop given that they have developed no high-end position players except Cano for over a decade and no top of the rotation starters for that time period (Hughes isn’t one yet)?

  73. blake January 23rd, 2013 at 5:12 pm

#Braves had trouble getting #Diamondbacks to return calls for much of off-season. As market for JUp shrunk, things evidently changed.

  74. J. Alfred Prufrock January 23rd, 2013 at 5:12 pm

Thanks MTU/Shame – I was looking for something else, I guess. That’s the kind of stuff an owner says to light a fire under a player – you don’t say that stuff and then trade the guy.

  75. MTU January 23rd, 2013 at 5:13 pm

Just trade Upton so I can know no significant addition will occur. He is now about the twentieth guy over the last two years the Yankees were not involved with despite obvious possible benefits.
Put my faint hopes to rest.

Just trying to be real….Upton has finished in the top 5 in MVP voting and had a 6 wAR season at age 24…..love the upside some of our prospects hAve but the odds are that none of them will ever be as good as J Upton is now…..hopefully they will but its unlikely

  91. FiretheUMPIRE January 23rd, 2013 at 5:27 pm

Cashman is too busy sext-messaging ugly girls from Craigslist.org

  92. austinmac January 23rd, 2013 at 5:29 pm

I think we can safely assume Upton cost too much on dollars to even get off the ground in internal discussions. Plus, he would require the prospects who all must succeed in the great plan.

  93. J. Alfred Prufrock January 23rd, 2013 at 5:29 pm

    Patrick January 23rd, 2013 at 5:22 pm

I really want Justin Upton but we haven’t heard a peep about the Yankees being interested. I can only assume that our prospects just don’t match up with what the Diamondbacks want. Cashman and Towers are close, they must have talked about Upton at least a little bit.

We wouldn’t necessarily hear about it. But he does not seem to fit their current idea of the “right Yankee makeup.”

I guess the “right Yankee makeup” doesn’t include good, young, cost controlled players with superstar ceiling.

It’s a shame .. I guess they prefer aging, injury prone, past their prime veterans

  96. austinmac January 23rd, 2013 at 5:31 pm

I’m sure none of is will switch allegiances, but the Braves and Nats are interesting teams. I wish we were making the moves they seem to be making. Heck, I would like to see signs of consciousness from the from office.

  97. blake January 23rd, 2013 at 5:31 pm

@Ken_Rosenthal: #Diamondbacks GM Towers going on vacation to Africa on Friday. Would prefer to move either Upton or Kubel by then. But it’s not a deadline.

  98. blake January 23rd, 2013 at 5:32 pm

If the Braves get Upton then that NL east will be a dog fight

  99. FiretheUMPIRE January 23rd, 2013 at 5:32 pm

Ahh, Kevin Towers going back to his roots I see.

  100. austinmac January 23rd, 2013 at 5:33 pm

Everything I have ever read of Upton is he is an extremely hard worker and gives great effort. The criticism has been he may try to hard and apply too much pressure.

I’ll take plenty of that type at 25.

  101. J. Alfred Prufrock January 23rd, 2013 at 5:34 pm

Well, one thing they seem not to go in for is Latino “swagger”. Upton doesn’t have that “problem,” but he might actually know he’s real good, and not express enough humility for their liking.

I think the entire Yankee team is going to get a lesson in humility pretty soon. The 2014 outlook is, in my opinion, far worse than is realized. They have half a team and that half in aging and expensive.

If they want to do the development thing, I’m good with that, but there is no reason to believe, based on the last 20 years, that they have the stomach for uneven player development, which is what they would likely have to endure.

It’s far better than being a pretender, giving fans just enough reason to believe that if everything breaks right (sort of like winning the lottery), they can continue to make the playoffs every year.

Sadly I think that’s what they will do because it fits their business model.

There is some controversy these days as to whether or not all of our ancestors came from Africa.

    MTU,

That is a field I have an interest. No knowledge, just interest. I believe the best current thought is all living humans came from Africa 100,000-150,000 years ago. However, there were prior migrations that led to currently extinct human or human like beings such as the Neanderthal. The Hobbit folks and recent lips they found another type.

Of course, that could be all wrong.

  134. J. Alfred Prufrock January 23rd, 2013 at 5:58 pm

    champ,

I loved the five-tool advance billing on Ravel, but he’s coming off that injury.

I have only seen one game live: opening day at Staten Island. He got wrung up on sliders and he had a perceptible limp when he walked to and from the OF, but none noticeable when he ran, although unfortunately, he didn’t have to run much in CF that day. Someone said he needed stronger contacts, or something like that – something to do with his eyes.

My intention was to go back and see him again, but I got busy and never made it back last season. I was head over heels excited by the reports on him, and still am, but more cautious because of the ankle and just because he’s so far away.

  135. austinmac January 23rd, 2013 at 5:59 pm

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin

it snaps its jawUnlike snapping turtles, desert tortoises cannot snap their jaws. Since they are completely herbivorous they have no need for fast moving jaws. The only reason some turtles can snap, is because they need to be able to catch fast moving objects, such as insects. However since desert tortoises eat nothing but plants, they have no need to move quickly(because the plants aren’t going anywhere).
