Utility man Jeff Baker has signed a minor league deal with the Rangers, [2] and with that, the thin right-handed outfield market got even thinner.

Coming off a horrible 2012 season, Baker is 31-year-old with a career .296/.344/.498 slash line against lefties. The Rangers apparently view him as an infielder, [3]but he would have fit as a platoon outfielder with the Yankees. The value of signing him to a minor league deal depends largely on whether you believe last year was a sign of things to come. Seemed to me that Baker would have been a good option for the Yankees to have in camp, but he might have seen a better opportunity in Texas.

Regardless, it’s another option off the board, leaving it more and more likely that Russ Canzler and Matt Diaz will be the right-handed outfield headliners in Yankees camp.
