Pinch hitting: Emilio Estevez

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jan 29, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This is how today’s Pinch Hitter introduced himself in an email: “My name is Emilio Estevez (yes, just like the actor).”

Obviously, the name had to be addressed. With that out of the way…

Our Emilio was born in the Dominican Republic, “where baseball is more of a lifestyle than just a game,” he wrote. His family moved to New York when he was 4 years old, and now that he’s 27, Emilio is living in Kansas City, working as an engineer and still following the Yankees “like my life depended on it.”

Although he says Mariano Rivera is his favorite player, it’s not the return of the Yankees closer that Emilio wrote about.

The biggest improvement for the 2013 Yankees over the 2012 Yankees could be a healthy Brett Gardner.

To put it mildly, the Raul Ibanez/Andruw Jones duo was not good last year. Ibanez had the most memorable moment of the Yankees season with his pinch hit home run in Game 3 of the ALDS — and for that I will always be grateful — but the truth is that a .240/.308/.453 line is not good. If you like sabermetrics, his WAR of 0.3 (according to baseball-reference) should be a pretty good indicator of his value. Jones was just plain bad, hitting .197/294/.408 in 94 games.

Having said that, I will now spend the next 400 words gushing over how much I like the alternative.

Gardner has two major skills on offense: he can get on base and he can steal bases. During his two healthy seasons (2010 and 2011) he stole 96 bases; only Michael Bourn had more with 113. During this time, Gardner had an on-base percentage of .364, which gave him the highest on-base percentage of any player who had more than 50 stolen bases during those two seasons (Andrew McCutchen was tied with Gardner with an OBP of .364). The big advantage of Gardner over other ‘speedy’ players is that he is good at getting on base; you can’t say that about many of them.

Defensively, whether you like advanced defensive metrics or if you prefer the “eye test,” Gardner rates as an elite defender. He led all left fielders in DRS (defensive runs saved) and UZR (ultimate zone rating) in both 2010 and 2011. He has excellent range and a very good arm; Gardner had the fourth most outfield assists among left fielders during 2010 and 2011 combined. We can safely say that he is a huge improvement defensively over Ibanez or Jones.

The Yankees last season ranked 22nd in stolen bases. With a healthy Gardner, this area will be much improved in 2013. The Yankees were also last in triples with just 13 all season; Gardner hit seven triples in 2010 and eight in 2011. My point is that Gardner gives the Yankees offense another dimension which was lacking last year, and that is the ability of creating runs on the base paths.

Having an elite defensive left fielder, who is also one of the base-stealers in the game, who can also get on base regularly, on a team that is otherwise very slow on the bases is a big improvement over a worse-than-average left fielder who can’t get on base and who will occasionally hit a home run.

I, for one, can’t wait to see Gardner back out there making pitchers nervous and chasing down fly balls in the outfield.

That is not the reason to not sign Cano. It is purely economic. Again, he would have to be traded now.
    —————–

Rich, it’s absolutely reason to do it. Part of the reason the Yankees gave Alex the contract they did was based on the notion of him breaking Bonds’s records and making them clean again. Knowing how A-rod has deteriorated, and the annoyance that his steroid use has caused don’t you think they would have walked away when he opted out?

If they think Cano could pose that same kind of risk, that years 34 – 39 on his 8 year contract would be injury filled with controversy while he ties up a significant salary – that’s plenty of reason to let him walk. But yes, they should have traded him.

As for Alex, I’m serious – at this point I don’t see the downside to turning to him after the season and say “look, we’re done here. You have a contract, which we will honor, but going forward your skills and injuries have forced us to look at you as a platoon player. If that’s the role you’re willing to play, that’s fine. If not, we’re prepared to offer you a position within the organization – special adviser or something along those lines, much like Reggie – should you retire.”

It is a lot of money to walk away from, but if you’re Alex would you rather go that route or be humiliated on a daily basis by being reduced to a cheerleader?

    From RAB quoting an article:

There’s more evidence. On a 2009 client list, near A-Rod’s name, is that of Yuri Sucart, who paid Bosch $500 for a weeklong supply of HGH. Sucart is famous to anyone who has followed baseball’s steroid scandal. Soon after A-Rod’s admission, the slugger admitted that Sucart — his cousin and close friend — was the mule who provided the superstar his drugs. In 2009, the same year this notebook was written, Sucart (who lives in South Miami and didn’t respond to a message left at his home) was banned from all Yankees facilities.

The mentions of Rodriguez begin in 2009 and continue all the way through last season. Take a page in another notebook, which is labeled “2012? and looks to have been written last spring. Under the heading “A-Rod/Cacique,” Bosch writes, “He is paid through April 30th. He will owe May 1 $4,000… I need to see him between April 13-19, deliver troches, pink cream, and… May meds. Has three weeks of Sub-Q (as of April).”

Jap, I was talking a friend of who is originally from DR, what he said was interesting about HGH in Dominican Republic. He basically said it’s readily available and ppl takes as elixir to all. DR players makes up about roughly 10 percent of baseball populations and over half of baseball ban had come from DR players. this is a disproportion amt from where I stand. As far as Braun goes, sure, PED is running rampant in baseball period.

    ———————————

Let’s not forget Andy got it from his daddy. I don’t know that kids from the DR have more access to it or if they’re just not as good at covering it up.

Almost every kid on my high school baseball team was taking something. No one has more access to drugs than white kids that live in the suburbs. Believe me.

  6. Rich in NJ January 29th, 2013 at 9:10 am

    Chip

As I said on the prior thread, the money needed is so big, and their pre-existing commitments so large, that those two issues trump everthing else. If, however, PED issues caused Cano’s price to drop, I would sign him at a steep duscount.

There is a significant chance that some players we think are pristine are dirty.

So I think casting the net of suspicion is an illusory proposition.

  7. Chip January 29th, 2013 at 9:15 am

Incidentally – it turns out that not only was Melky cheating – he was double cheating since he was, per this article, buying HGH but was suspended for using something else.

    ==================================

No way they get out from underneath the contract as it relates to luxury tax. He’s not going to retire. He’s either on the team or bought out. Either way his $27.5M will be a fact of life thru the next 5 seasons.

  9. Rich in NJ January 29th, 2013 at 9:15 am

Oh, btw, any attempt to void A-Rod’s contract will likely wound up in a lawsuit that produces an incredibly messy discovery process that produces leaks that embarrass a lot of important people. So the Yankees would need a very strong stomach.

  10. Shame Spencer January 29th, 2013 at 9:16 am

    Also – Yay Gardner!

  11. ac1 January 29th, 2013 at 9:17 am

If MLBPA was serious about cleaning it up, they would agree that anyone who tests positive automatically has their contract voided. 50 game suspensions are weak. Even Melky. He took his 50 game suspension and then signed a 2/16 from the Jays. Short term pain for long term gain. Let’s see MLB go off on Gio, Cruz and company since they were listed too…. If they don’t they really can’t say much about Alex.

Wasn’t he suspended for elevated testosterone levels? HGH wouldn’t cause that?

  13. Shame Spencer January 29th, 2013 at 9:17 am

If you tell him he’ll never be a full time player or used as one they could just try to embarrass him into a retirement of some sort.

There are always going to be players using PEDs, and they are going to be on the team you root for. The key is to sign them cheaply.

  29. J. Alfred Prufrock January 29th, 2013 at 9:33 am

  32. Chip January 29th, 2013 at 9:38 am

Can’t void the contract – even if he had failed an official test they wouldn’t be able to do so – but, like I said, if you tell him that his role is going to be reduced to glorified cheerleader going forward – that he will be used as a RH designated hitter in a platoon – and gave him the choice of accepting that role or retiring and joining the organization in some other capacity – then he might be willing to go that route.

PED or not this shows a real issue with Alex regarding the people he associates with. In life, it really isnt that hard to stay out of trouble. I dont feel bad for any of these athletes. They have every advantage in the world, yet we continue to see Alex’s poor choices, DUIs, bar fights, etc…. It’s just ridiculous and i believe that these players in all sports should be held to a certain standard while they are playing. If they cannot, they should be kicked out.

Don’t know whether he was on the Braves 40 man roster or not, but he didn’t play in MLB until 2009 and was suspended in 4/2008. Unfortunately there is no provision where suspended player reduces their luxury tax burden. The luxury tax hit of a contract is calculated way before any suspended games are taken into account. What it would do is reduce the physical payroll burden of the player, but not the luxury tax I don’t think. Its not listed in the JDA or the CBA.

I really don’t know if I care deeply anymore. I’d love for sports to be clean. I’d love for life to be fair. There are too many gray areas; too many times to allow for “extenuating circumstances,” or an explanatory backstory that makes everything, if not “okay,” then at least understandable.

But I’m afraid it does come down to $$$$. And in a some cases, ego. Yes, the backstory can be a prior life of poverty, or an overzealous need to be the best for whatever reason. Ultimately, the backstory cannot or does not matter anymore.

And, it also seems that treatment/characterization/”demonization” of a player depends on whether the player is a media/fan/MLB golden child.

  123. ac1 January 29th, 2013 at 10:48 am

The CBA shows the players association is still not serious about cleaning baseball up…
There should be much stronger punishments

1st time: 1 year suspension (must play next season under league minimum) – then they can become FA (only 1 year contracts for 3 seasons), then FA.

    2nd time: OUT

Also, a positive test should void the contract (if the team wants to).

This would show they are serious about cleaning up baseball.

I don’t see how this is good news for Hal or the Yankees. I suppose the best that could come out of it is a suspension in which the Yankees don’t have to pay him for the period of suspension. That doesn’t help the cap, but it does let Hal have a little extra cash he says he can always use on the horse farm.

Something seems wrong with this picture. And yes, it does tie in the cap since he is a principle reason for the budget issues.

as much as i like cano i think it’s just a matter of time before he gets caught or he stops using and isn’t as good anymore.

neither option is a good one.maybe that’s why the yankees aren’t extending and will let him walk.

27.5 per year for the length of his contract is assessed to the Yankees. Potentially less some offsets.

  161. blake January 29th, 2013 at 11:20 am

    @mlbtraderumors: Orioles Sign Chris Dickerson http://t.co/GCczf7Yh #mlb

Bet that’ll haunt us at least once after he’s sprinkled with Orioles pixie dust

  162. blake January 29th, 2013 at 11:21 am

“27.5 per year for the length of his contract is assessed to the Yankees. Potentially less some offsets.”

So a buy out for a lesser amount wouldn’t help anything

  163. mick January 29th, 2013 at 11:21 am

.but I think Braun was innocent as I’ve said before
    ======================
Then MLB has covered up again led by Selig.
If they can get you to believe , then they succeed.

  164. Jerkface January 29th, 2013 at 11:21 am

PED users have corrupted the sacred numbers of the game of baseball.
    They now mean nothing.

So silly. How do the numbers mean nothing? What does it matter? These players are facing other players who are using PEDs, competing with batters or pitchers who use. Their numbers are valid because everyone is capable of doing it. And even so, WHAT DOES IT MATTER?!

We should be grateful that our star players can play longer, remain healthier/stronger, and get to the highest peak of athletic performance.

  165. blake January 29th, 2013 at 11:23 am

@PeteAbe: Is there a downside at this point to the #Yankees taking legal action to void A-Rod’s contract?

Problem is they have like a zero percent chance of winning right….so the real question is there an upside to doing it?

  166. Jerkface January 29th, 2013 at 11:23 am

So a buy out for a lesser amount wouldn’t help anything

    Not really.

(ii) If a Club terminates a multi-year Uniform Player’s Contract while it remains obligated to pay Salary under either this Agreement or a Special Covenant to the Contract, Salary shall be allocated to that Club for each Contract Year during which its obligation continues. Salary shall be attributed to each such Con-tract Year pursuant to this Article XXIII (subject to any offset called for by this Agreement or a Special Covenant). This attribution shall apply even if the Club pays the Salary in advance.

basically says: Whatever the ‘contract is’, as long as they have to pay something it is calculated under ARTICLE XXIII which is the CBA calculation stuff.

How does this make any sense? A-rod has won 1 WS, Lance Armstrong single handedly mangled the tour de france (while beating a bunch of dopers, but I digress)

  169. blake January 29th, 2013 at 11:28 am

  182. blake January 29th, 2013 at 11:42 am

Update Part Deux: It’s worth noting that players can be suspended for “possession” of PEDs according to the Joint Drug Agreement. There does not have to be a failed test. There’s even a whole section on how to appeal a suspension without a failed test. Several players, including Edinson Volquez, were allowed to serve PED-related suspensions while on the DL.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
