Notes from Tampa: Nova, Pineda, Cabral and Chamberlain

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Feb 05, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Things seem to be pretty quiet down in Tampa, but we’ll go to our Florida correspondent Erik Boland for the latest via Twitter…

Ivan Nova spoke to reporters at the Yankees minor league complex today. He said he’d been there for about a week and has his eyes set on winning a spot in the rotation. “I’m going to be there,” he said.

Michael Pineda threw 25 pitches off a half mound and was followed by Cesar Cabral, who we were told earlier this winter is on basically the same program as Pineda.

Joba Chamberlain said he has heard back from Kevin Youkilis. As you probably remember, Chamberlain and Youkilis have a history of bad blood, and Chamberlain reached out with a phone call after Youkilis signed with the Yankees. Now that Chamberlain has heard back, maybe the story of their relationship will go away. But probably not.

Phil Hughes and Clay Rapada were among those at the complex this morning. Derek Jeter was also there going through his usual routine.

Got any radar readings on Pineda?

We need a B.A. reading too.

I’m still trying to figure out if all three incarnations of Stone are actually stuckey..”

When I read this, it makes me wonder if you and blake and randy have the tinnest of tin ears, because I cannot fathom why soneone would create the Stoneburner persona when it doesn’t even work for Stoneburner.

All I can say is: Cards presser is rotation-related and no bueno.

Chris Carpenter allegedly will announce his retirement.

I just want to hear the words “free and easy.”

The access the Yankees allow the media at the minor league complex is hillarious.

I was encouraged when blake said he was investigating a potential new stuckey identity, then disappointed when he revealed the target of his suspicions. It hurts when false hope dies.

  11. pat February 5th, 2013 at 2:35 pm

Chris Carpenter still feeling numbness in arm and won’t continue throwing. Mozeliak says it is “unlikely” he will pitch in 2013.

Great information Chad. Any very relevant to recent rants about Joba as a starter. Complainers have raged about that guys like Nova and Hughes are receiving more opportunities than Joba – leaving this issue aside – why the indignation at Nova and Hughes – while said posters will say it is directed at Yankees high command – to do this – these complainers bring down Nova and Hughes in the process – why not just be supportive and hope for the best with Nova and Hughes instead of ranting and raving – why not enjoy instead of rage – sadly it comes down to the hubris of the comment section of the blog – the old I know what is best no matter what and will second-guess forever – I do take satisfication that I will enjoy the upcoming season and root for Nova and Hughes, while the complainers will be stuck in neutral in the past on an argument that can never be won or an outcome that cannot be changed and is losing its relevancy over the years – - – -

This is Stoneburner, reporting from self-exile on Ceti Alpha V, with the wax poetic minute – - – -

I’ll leave the sniffing out of multiple personae to you.

But Stone sounds like he’s been here before… even the first version of Stone sounded like he’d been here before.

Thats because he has been here before… as Stoneburner.

  15. Rich in NJ February 5th, 2013 at 2:44 pm

I agree with Jerkface’s take on the last thread:

Stuckey was much smarter, and less crazy. He went out of his way to not be crazy, where as Stoneburner goes out of his way to appear more and more crazed as he buys into his own gimmick. Plus Stuckey was never the type to willfully misunderstand things so he can keep up a gimmick.
    _

I had similar thoughts, but couldn’t have articulated them as well.

  16. Nick in SF February 5th, 2013 at 2:45 pm

” I’ll leave the sniffing out of multiple personae to you. But Stone sounds like he’s been here before… even the first version of Stone sounded like he’d been here before.”

Did you retire from personae sniffing after outing jmills? ;)

I don’t know, a lot of people say they read comments for a while before they started commenting themselves. Maybe Stoneburner is also MTU or yankeefeminista? I just don’t get the stuckey connection, aside from the likelihood that both of them annoyed some of the same people.

  17. Tyler February 5th, 2013 at 2:47 pm

Wonder if the Cards will get Lohse back now that Carp is likely done for 2013.

  18. Shame Spencer February 5th, 2013 at 2:51 pm

Well stuckey would often shift the arguments to something entirely different.. which Stone does. And I thought maybe he just quit as stuckey, tiring of being somewhat moderate, and started up again as a new more extreme personality for sh*ts and giggles.

I should have retired on a high note after jmills.

  24. Nick in SF February 5th, 2013 at 2:58 pm

My original take on Stoneburner V.1 was that he was another Daily News blog refugee who imported his own feuds and foibles, but he denied it, so I apologized. He did seem to ramp up his craziness pretty quickly upon arrival, as I recall.

Yes. I never tried to guess who it is, but I have a hard time believing that’s a singular poster. His conversations with joeman are fun to read.

  28. Tyler February 5th, 2013 at 3:02 pm

Nothing against jmills personally, but from posting on Yankee blogs/boards over the years, there is kind of the ubiquitous “other team in your division fan” poster who, unlike the out and out trolls, is inoffensive and at times engaing, even if they want to inject topics that often don’t matter much to Yankee fans.

Oh, for crying out loud. Jmills is a very nice, eccentric Canadian who has a fondness for Rush and Sylvia Plath.

There is no one here who could fake being jmills. He’s genuine. I have an eight paragraph email from Jmills about Derrida, the ’72 Summit Series, Hamilton vs. Toronto, and the genius of Plath.

No one here currently has any hint of his syntax style, vibrant word choices, life observations. And no one else here cares that Rogie Vachon isn’t in the Hall of Fame!

    yankeefeminista February 5th, 2013 at 3:04 pm

Ramirez’s fastball and change were always plus to plus plus. That’s why I didn’t want him to be relegated to the pen, and talked up his stuff. I said as far back as 2010 that he needed the secondary pitch to be legit/a prospective starter. Is this somehow news? I thought it was too early to give up on a kid with such tremendous stuff. That slider is the pitch that replaced the failed slurvy curve from 2010. J-Ram tried but he couldn’t spin a regular curve, so failed curve and slurvy curve turned into his current slider legit slider. What exactly is the problem here; I didn’t read the original text, just the follow ups. Thanks, guys, but consider the source…

  32. Nick in SF February 5th, 2013 at 3:06 pm

I like that though. It’s always nice to have some fans of other teams around especially when they aren’t just here to troll and only respond “yankees suck” to every question. Not at all familiar with the amount of Blue Jays blogs/message boards out there but I’d wager that this is likely more active than those at least during the offseason (and really all of hockey season up there).

It’s a movie that works for HBO, probably not in the theaters. Yeah, Tom Sawyer. The groups serves as a vehicle for bonding for a guy, Paul Rudd, who is about to get married, and realizes that he doesn’t really have any male friends. So he meets the Jason Segal character, and among other things, they realize that they both are obsessed with “Rush.”

It’s certainly possible that someone would take that paranoid view, as I did notice yankeefeminista make a comment along the lines of “I think we know who the fake account was last night” in reference to the conversation I had with Mr. Umpire and I also noted your cryptic suggestion that you knew wbo he was when you stopped thinking he was Bret the Hitman. They are going to be the worst team in either league, but I really admire what that front office is doing. They are truly ‘going for it’ in terms of prospect development rather than putz around some ~70 win teams. As a mid tier team payroll wise, that is a smart direction to go into, but one that needs the understanding of the fans & ownership. Luhnow is a good exec, came from the Cards.

Now if you were a fan of the astros, you’re basically going to be in for rough times the next 2 years, but the payoff should be good. I don’t think the YAnkees should ever employ the complete tear down the Astros have.

  70. Nick in SF February 5th, 2013 at 3:28 pm

I didn’t coin the use of the word “jihad” here, Mr. Prufrock, but I do understand the allure of the suggestion/accusation. It’s kind of the perfect internet board smear, in a way. How would one disprove it?

    ///

Did not see it, but the league wants to make sure they are communicating they are cracking down on that kind of thing, so some of the refs are maybe a tad overzelous. With all the suits going on in the NFL, the NHL can’t be too far behind, I would say.

You know, I think maybe getting rid of the 2-line pass was an error. Players are bigger, stronger, faster, and now that they don’t have to slow down to stay onside, they can really be on a guy in a hurry. They should have at least made the rink bigger to better accommodate the change, but they’re loath to rip out seats, of course.

I guess the 2-line pass going by the boards is a response to all the sophisticated trapping. I don’t know what the answer is, since they really can’t enforce interference when picks are being set everywhere. What’s your take?

Totally agree. I thought Verducci put it best when he said that the worst place to be in baseball is stuck in the middle… either go for the WS or rebuild. I think they’ll come out strong in the end with Luhnow. Guy built the Cards system into the best in baseball and the ‘Stros system has already rebounded.

This season is just going to be unbelievably ugly especially with the switch from baseballs worst division to what could be the best… I couldn’t believe that Bud Norris is their highest paid player right now.

“Nick, leave me off the hit list. Thanks.”

You may have missed the point. I think the notion that Stoneburner is also you or MTU is just as absurd as saying he’s stuckey, not that you or MTU are suspect. The point, to put it another way, is that anyone can say anyone is really anyone else, which Mr. Prufrock similarly illustrated.

    JAP-

I like that the game seems at least to be more open without the red line. I understand the officials will make mistakes but I hate that there is no accountability in the NHL towards officiating. Ian Walsh has blown so many games by trying to make his mark and he continually gets away with it and collects paychecks. So frustrating as a fan to see this guy on the ice with no consequence.

I like that the NHL has cracked down on blows to the head. I’m all for the physicality of the game (I think the people who want fighting out are absolutely out of their minds… in fact, I hate the instigator rule and wish that would be gone) but the league has to protect guys because of what we now know about brain injuries. I do like the thought of widening the rink… maybe to international levels. I think by playing hockey you are in a way signing off on the risk that a physical sport can do to you. I say no on the 2-line pass but maybe widen the rink giving guys a little more room out there.

I’m worried that their very wise decision to build up tons of minor league strength is going to help the AL West put 3 teams in the playoff hunt next year. Its going to be a huge luxury for the Rangers, Angels, and A’s to face the Astros 18 times or whatever. In addition to Luhnow they picked up Kevin Goldstein as a scouting coordinator, and he is a guy I really liked reading on twitter, the internet, and hearing on XM.

“Insanity is relative. It depends on who has who locked in what cage.”
    Ray Bradbury

“If we weren’t all crazy, we would go insane.”
    Jimmy Buffett

“In a mad world, only the mad are sane.”
    Akiro Kurosawa

    And finally –

“Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives…. I think we’re being run by maniacs for maniacal ends … and I think I’m liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That’s what’s insane about it.”

Also, I think the NFL concussion problem is much easier to solve than the NHL’s. Take away the helmets football players have now and go back to the leather hats they used to wear. I have many friends who play rugby (no helmets) and while those guys suffer their fair share of broken bones, they rarely get head injuries because they wrap a guy up before bringing him down. There’s none of this leading with the head/spear type tackles. Hockey players don’t lead with their heads obviously so it’s more challenging.

Only hope is that those 3 teams kind of beat up each other in their head-to-head matchups which could neutralize things a bit.

Can you imagine what Gretzky and Lemieux could have achieved without the red line? I actually miss the timing passes and straddling the line that goes on to stay onside. Of course, it doesn’t hurt Sid and Malkin, does it? I loved the contrast I used to get when I’d go to see WCHA, CCHA and Hockey East games with the 2-line pass not being in the game, because it was a novelty back then. But college players are so much smaller.

Walsh reminds me of Kerry Fraser; they want to be the star. Yeah the instigator rule is really stupid, because they don’t even get that right most of the time. Third man in was always iffy, too, because it’s amazing how refs will let one guy get pounded before stepping in in mismatches. Dale Rolfe once got his face pounded when by Clarke because Schultz (IIRC) had his arms pinned. I think maybe we’ve come a ways since then, though, hopefully. I don’t think it would be good to get rid of fighting, either. The best fight is when two guys drop ‘em, get it over with, and then you can get back to playing. Too much cheap stuff would go unchecked, so yeah, the players in this way police themselves.

  101. Tyler February 5th, 2013 at 3:49 pm

Agree with everything there. It’s not easy being an NHL official with the speed of the game… mistakes will be made. But the lack of accountability is astounding. Refs don’t even have to talk to the media after the game.

People say that they hate staged fights but how can they not be staged with the instigator rule in place? I think it also allows the game to police itself. Players won’t be so careless in flying in and leaving their feet if they know that it’s going to come right back to them later in the game by dropping the gloves.

I follow NFL drafting more than MLB’s, but if a draft board is conducted well, you don’t reach, especially in the first round. You maintain discipline. Law was down in charleston multiple times this year, so maybe he saw him. He also grabs sources from multiple scouts, so I don’t think he would say something like that lightly.

ive met many baseball players throughout my life. some are a holes. most are ok people from my perspective.

i dont like the a holes.

  147. RadioKev February 5th, 2013 at 4:23 pm

Radiokev, it isn’t based primarily on whether they will reach the majors, and Romine doesn’t have the prospective upside of top catchers like d’Arnaud, Zunino and Sanchez.
    ———-

Certainly Romine doesn’t rank next to those guys, but internally he shouldn’t rank near the bottom of 20.

  148. Nick in SF February 5th, 2013 at 4:25 pm

“You’re safe. It was just an assumption. I don’t really care who you are”

That’s reassuring, because a neutral reader might have seen your previous comments and concluded that you do care about who I’m not. ;)

  149. J. Alfred Prufrock February 5th, 2013 at 4:25 pm

Romine needs to be healthy and get some real time in AAA.

  150. Against All Odds February 5th, 2013 at 4:25 pm

Did you ever consider that if you met most of the players on any team, you would think they were a ‘hole?

    ————————

Colin Cowherd(radio host) always says fans would be surprised how many players they think are jerks are good guys while those they believe are good are really mean guys in real life.

  151. Rich in NJ February 5th, 2013 at 4:26 pm

“i root for the yankees but im getting sick and tired of having to hold my nose and root for aholes like arod.”

You met A-Rod? And btw, just because a person is a ‘hole to one person, doesn’t mean that they are a ‘hole.

Anyway, the 2004 A-Rod trade remains a great one.

I love Derek Jeter as a baseball player.. but giving women a self-signed ball after banging them probably puts you in the category of douche bag.

  153. Shame Spencer February 5th, 2013 at 4:29 pm

I watched Derek Jeter reject my 6 year old cousin’s request for an autograph lol.. that was pretty funny.

It’s the same with politicians. I have met guys who I would never vote for, but are really good guys. I have met others who I would and have voted for, who are jerks.

Ask yourself this, if A-Rod had stayed with Texas, but opted out after the season he had in 2007, in light of the advice they got from Goldman Sachs, would the Yankees have signed him?

    Probably.

I like Moose. I’m glad he was a Yankee. I can appreciate his priquely personality and I can overlook bis Stanfordism. But on some level I just have to wonder about a guy who goes to Tokyo and sits in his hotel room eating PBJ’s. I hope that’s just apocryphal.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
