Today’s PED report

This is becoming a sad ritual, isn’t it? Anyway, here are some of the latest reports in the world of performance enhancing drugs.

• Francisco Cervelli didn’t talk to reporters at the Yankees minor league complex yesterday, but he spoke this morning to explain that he’s not trying to avoid questions about his ties to Biogenesis, he’s simply waiting until the entire Yankees media contingent gets to Tampa next week. “I’m not running away from you guys,” Cervelli told Erik Boland and two others. “I’m not scared or anything.”

• Newsday’s David Lennon notes that, by acknowledging at least some sort of connection to Anthony Bosch — while still proclaiming their innocence – Cervelli and Ryan Braun might have added some legitimacy to the previous report from the Miami New Times. “Up to that point, all of the players previously implicated — including Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees — had attacked the legitimacy of the documents and denied any connection to Biogenesis or Bosch,” Lennon wrote. “Those documents remain critical to MLB’s investigation, and with some players now verifying their appearance on those handwritten pages, that could be significant.”

• Former Yankees prospect Jesus Montero’s name is reportedly in those Biogenesis documents, but Montero told the Seattle Times that he has no idea why his name would be there. “I feel like I’m caught in the middle of something and I don’t know why,” Montero said.

• Finally, the unexpected PED story of the day: Curt Schilling said on a radio program that former members of the Red Sox front office once suggested that he use performance enhancing drugs. “At the end of my career, in 2008 when I had gotten hurt, there was a conversation that I was involved in in which is was brought to my attention that this is a potential path I might want to pursue,” Schilling told Colin Cowherd. Yikes.

I would hate having to ask players about this stuff.

I believe certain unnamed players, not the front office, talked openly to Schilling in 2008, about using steroids to help him heal faster.

I believe certain unnamed players, not the front office, talked openly to Schilling in 2008, about using steroids to help him heal faster.

I think of the implication is front office. Members of the organization is a roundabout way of saying front office. If he wanted to say players he could have said former players.

  7. Yankee Trader February 7th, 2013 at 5:09 pm

Former Yankee nemesis Curt Schilling has a long history of chastising drug cheats in baseball, but Thursday he took it a step further, saying he had been approached in 2008 about using performance-enhancing drugs by “former members of the (Red Sox)” to prolong his career and help expedite his recovery from injury.
Schilling said the conversation took place in the Boston clubhouse, “in which it was brought to my attention that this is a potential path I might want to pursue.”
“It was an incredibly uncomfortable conversation,” said Schilling, who did not name any names and added that other teammates could hear the conversation. “The other people weren’t in the conversation but they could clearly hear the conversation. And it was suggested to me that at my age and in my situation, why not? What did I have to lose? Because if I wasn’t going to get healthy, it didn’t matter. And if I did get healthy, great. It caught me off guard, to say the least.”

Did you read the New York daily news article?
What in that article implicates the front office?

  12. Jerkface February 7th, 2013 at 5:17 pm

But I can also see that interpretation, YT. So Beckett is probably a good guess. Manny was also on the 08 Red Sox. Varitek, Lowell, Drew.

I guess I’m just with the Hardball Talk interpretation: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports......s-in-2008/

I listened to the audio of what Schilling said. he never implied it was teammates or players. He said former members of the organization, which isn’t necessarily players, and that people could hear. Not teammates or players.

Its very neutral language when he could have said former teammates or players.

  14. Giuseppe Franco February 7th, 2013 at 5:19 pm

Like many others, I simply don’t care about PEDs and I wish these “scandals” would effin’ die already and never brought up again.

The banishment of amphetamines have made a much more significant impact on the game than steroids or HGH.

Hell, if only I had the access and financial means to acquire high quality “deer antler spray” to improve my performance in the gym and on the diamond in my local “Over the Hill Baseball League” (not a joke…that’s what its called), I would do it without hesitation.

I take pre-workout supplements regularly that you can find at any GNC and some of those products make me feel like Superman. Can’t even imagine what high quality HGH could do for me.

  15. Jerkface February 7th, 2013 at 5:21 pm

It also lines up with the Red Sox organization giving their players a lecture on the safe use of PEDs in spring training.

  16. blake February 7th, 2013 at 5:26 pm

    Giuseppe,
I’ve already told my story of taking “Andro” upon moving from a desk to hard labor at age 48 or so. It was legal then, and, damn, it worked. No experience with the more exotic steroids or HGH, but when you approach 70, what the hell?

  22. Jerkface February 7th, 2013 at 5:31 pm

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was standing in the clubhouse at Fenway Park early in the 2008 season when a member of the team’s staff suggested he try human growth hormone.

Joe Franco ,are you serious about amphetamines being a bigger problem than steroids? “greenies” have been staples forever in the NFl and coffee drinkers in all sports abound.

When is the last time you heard of someone dying from too much coffee?

    ——-

Doing well, Pat. It’s been awhile. Hope all is well on your end.

There are a number of pre-workout powders that you mix with water roughly 30 min before a lift day. They are designed to increase your focus, strength, and intensity.

I’ve tried many of them (Assault, NO Explode, 12 Gauge shotgun, C4, etc., etc) but the one that has worked best for me is called “Craze” by a company called Driven Sports.

I can take that in the morning before my workout and it oftentimes has me running 100 miles an hour all day long. Good stuff.

Gotta run. Off to the batting cages to get some swings in.

“Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was standing in the clubhouse at Fenway Park early in the 2008 season when a member of the team’s staff suggested he try human growth hormone.”

And that’s when teammate Manny, so outraged at the idea of cheating, knocked the clubbie down to protect his friend’s honor. #newnarrative

Amphetamines are not coffee. And why would improved focus and renewed energy be a boon in a sport about focusing on a small object and playing every day I wonder?

You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about.

Playing 162 games a year is one hell of a grind and that doesn’t include ST or October.

Amphetamines keep you going day in and day out.

  32. comnsnse February 7th, 2013 at 5:40 pm

Tomingeorgia, right on brother I’ve been suggesting to Dr’s for years that monitored dosage of prednisone is the elixir of senior America!

Doctors will tell you to take all sorts of anti inflammatory meds including scrips and OTC but are reluctant to proscribe Prednisone which of course is also an anti inflammatory .

Continue to monitor your liver function and live long!

  33. Giuseppe Franco February 7th, 2013 at 5:41 pm

BTW…never said amphetamines were a bigger “problem.”

I said they had a bigger impact on the game and getting through the daily grind of a brutal schedule.

Can too much caffeine kill you? Monster Energy is back in the spotlight after the FDA reports that, in the past three years, five people may have died from downing the company’s drinks By The Week Staff | October 24, 2012

Consuming high amounts of caffeine can reportedly cause irritability, abnormal heart beat, and, sometimes, cardiac arrest.

Energy drinks are under scrutiny again. Not only has the Food and Drug Administration released a report stating that five people in the past three years may have died from consuming Monster Energy products, but a Maryland couple is suing the company behind the popular line of energy drinks, for the death of their 14-year-old daughter last December. Anais Fournier died from a heart complication after allegedly drinking two 24-ounce cans of Monster on back-to-back days. An autopsy revealed she died of “cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity.”

  36. tomingeorgia February 7th, 2013 at 5:45 pm

    comnsnse,
I’ve been abusing my poor liver for many years, and when my results come back, the doctor is kind of pissed. Working better than fine. PSA is what I want to know about.

  37. Yankee Trader February 7th, 2013 at 5:47 pm

While caffeine is legal, it’s still a potentially dangerous psychoactive stimulant that can show up in the blood stream within five minutes of ingestion, cardiac surgeon Dr. Marc Gillinov tells CBS News. “Caffeine toxicity,” or consuming high amounts of caffeine, can cause irritability, hyper-aroused states (including insomnia), abnormal heart beat, and, sometimes, cardiac arrest. Consuming more than 1 gram of the stimulant can trigger serious reactions; at 10 grams, it can cause death.

But consuming even 1 gram of caffeine can be a tall order: A 12-ounce cup of Starbucks coffee, for example, contains about 260 milligrams, meaning you’d have to drink about four cups to ingest 1 gram.

  38. jacksquat February 7th, 2013 at 5:47 pm

I seriously doubt amphetamines had a larger impact on the game than steroids, but it can’t be proven either way I suppose.

  39. comnsnse February 7th, 2013 at 5:48 pm

Joseph, “the banishment of speed has made much more of an impact on the game than steroids,HGH etc.”?

Does this suggest to you that speed caused more of an impact on performance than muscle growth enhancers which have maimed and killed players and destroyed the ability to compare records are comparable?

Remember the parachute analogy my friend!

Tommy, PSA while still acknowledged as a factor in prostate problems has recently been downgraded to the much less important file. Too many variables.

If you’re concerned get a biopsy, unfortueately biopsies of the prostate have become the test du jour for the medical community.

After a certain age there are still many opinions on how to treat prostate problems.

On a happier note how’s the Viagra working? Only kidding!

    YT,
I get up early, drink a whole pot of coffee before my bride gets up, make another for her (and I’ll have another cup, probably). Too many things to avoid if you want to live forever. Smoke, drink, mercury in fish, bio-engineered crops, anti-biotics in meat and poultry, and on and on. What’s a body to do, other than like what you like and do as you do. I’ll probably die from tripping on the sidewalk, anyway, or have a car fall on me when a car jack fails.

  62. kd February 7th, 2013 at 6:26 pm

    schilling just wants attention

it’s forgivable for a player to take steroids, a modest improvement in numbers leads to many more millions on their next contract.

it’s unforgivable for a team to suggest that a player take them. the player, unless a few months away from losing all his money in a video game country, is thinking about money. saying no might mean getting cut. it’s leverage that has no defense, from the players point of view.

if the red sox actually did this more than once, there’s a real problem.

  63. austinmac February 7th, 2013 at 6:26 pm

    Comnsns,

Funny I mentioned Kearns before reading your post. Perhaps, I am he and must say some of the bad things said about me a couple years ago were hurtful. I did help cool the building.

My favorite Replacement player is Paul Westerberg. Obvious choice, I know, but “Left of the Dial” is one of my favorite rock anthems of all time and I felt the floor shake when he played it in San Francisco in 2005.

  65. Ys Guy February 7th, 2013 at 6:29 pm

the problem with nba refs is that they call the game differently for the home team.

I said don’t post the budget numbers, I already know them. It’s pointless. Discuss what I was discussing.
    __

I didn’t cherry pick it. I chose that part of the post to respond to because the numbers show that if Jeter rejects his option and negotiates a new, bigger deal, and Cano re-signs at huge money, that close to $120m could be tied up in 5 players.

That runs counter to your assertion that [t]he Yankees still have a decent amount of money left to spend.”

How is $50-$55m a decent amount of money to fill out the remainder of the entire roster of a team that can, in Hal’s words, win the WS every year.
