Pineda pleads no contest to August DUI

Here’s The Associated Press…

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda has pleaded no contest to driving under the influence.

Hillsborough County State Attorney spokesman Mark Cox says Pineda entered the plea Wednesday in a Tampa courtroom.

Pineda was arrested and charged with DUI in Tampa on Aug. 20 last year.

Cox says a judge ordered that Pineda serve 50 hours community service, up to one year of probation, attend DUI school and pay a $500 fine.

The 24-year-old Pineda missed all of 2012 with a shoulder injury, and he’s expected to be out until at least June of this year as he recovers.

A few other notes and links from today.

• Today was photo day, which means a chance for the world to see the mustache that Joba Chamberlain has been sporting in the Yankees clubhouse the past week and a half. It’s … special.

• Wally Matthews quotes a source who says Hal Steinbrenner is beginning to break from his desire that payroll be cut beneath the luxury tax threshold and might be willing to spend significantly next offseason.

• David Price told Jon Paul Morosi that he doesn’t think he could ever play for the Yankees. He likes his facial hair too much. “I wouldn’t sign a long-term deal there,” Price said. “Those rules, that’s old-school baseball. I was born in ’85. That’s not for me. That’s not something I want to be a part of.”

Derek Jeter’s response to Price’s comment: “Do you really think some player would say no, all things considered, if it was a good deal for them? I’m not talking about his situation, but if it was a good deal for a player, I’m pretty sure most guys – maybe not all guys – would have no trouble shaving.”

• Fun story from Dan Barbarisi about the Batting Stance Guy wanting Kevin Youkilis to return to his old hitting mechanics.

• A.J. Burnett is going to be the Pirates starter on Opening Day.

    Love Jeter’s response.

Can’t wait for Joba to be gone.

Is that guy really a Yankee? I thought they were known to run a classy organization. The sooner the better. Not sure why it’s taken so long. If they don’t act soon, I will lose much respect for the organization. Just release him. The new guy from Seattle is just as good.

@AndrewMarchand: Matthews: Hal channels Boss, loosens wallet http://t.co/K9v0xxCPJf Ths is a great, great column from @espnnyyankees

    We shall see about that

The Yankees signing Cano to a big deal in no way means they are discarding their desire to get under 189.

And “insider with knowledge” is worth the bytes it’s printed on.

  5. Jerkface February 20th, 2013 at 10:16 pm

What about a PROVERBIAL insider? Thats an interesting source.

  6. jacksquat February 20th, 2013 at 10:21 pm

The Yankees might ditch the 189 stuff, but that article makes it sound like it’s already history.

I don’t trust anything Matthews says. Most of the time his articles just make it look like he’ll say anything to get attention.

  7. Rich in NJ February 20th, 2013 at 10:21 pm

Levine would be as proverbial as it gets, and has as much interest in spending his bosses’ money as almost anyone.

The exception being that if you look at who would be the primary beneficiary of more spending, or even talk of more spending, it would be an agent and his client(s).

I agree. I don’t buy this for a minute. Even if it was true, it makes no sense to telegraph to Boras their intentions to open the purse strings. It would undercut all the good that they’ve done over the last three years rebuilding their credibility, and kill any possibility of getting this thing done before the season.

Joba needs to lose the cheesy mustache. It makes him look like John Wayne Gacy–not a good look.

when they made no move to trade cano in the offseason, it seemed obvious to me that they intended to sign cano pretty much no matter what.

i always assumed they would go over $189 if it didnt look like they could compete.

    i still believe that.

  12. Ys Guy February 20th, 2013 at 10:43 pm

man, that is one sad moustache.

I agree that Hal will go over 189 if he deems it necessary. It was always pretty clear that he would do so. But this story is still nonsense–I don’t believe that Matthews had a source from inside the Yankee FO.

  14. Rich in NJ February 20th, 2013 at 10:47 pm

When is the last time that they traded someone of Cano’s stature who was still in their prime (iow, not Sheffield)?

I’m thinking Rickey Henderson, but maybe I’m wrong.

So I thought the chances of trading Cano were < 0, no matter what.

Things a proverbial insider might say………

    or

“A fool and his money are soon parted”.

  16. Rich in NJ February 20th, 2013 at 10:53 pm

“A fool and his money are soon parted.”

True, but the Yankees can virtually print money, so there is a ring of truth to the
story, even if it is fabricated.

  17. Nilsson February 20th, 2013 at 10:56 pm

FYI, probabilities and chances are always given a value between 0 and 1. It’s never a negative number.

The John Wayne Gacy comp was both funny and disturbing. Joba needs to lose the mustache ASAP.

  21. G. Love February 20th, 2013 at 11:23 pm

Anyone who thinks that Wallace Matthews wasn’t generated by fanbase unrest and boatloads of unsold tickets is simply to dumb to talk to.

The fans spoke all winter & their voices were heard. If we were silent little pom pom waiving mice, the team would think they could get away with this.

What this article is, is a sign that the unrest felt by many of us has finally made it all the way up to Hal’s big brain.

This article may just be all show to placate us and change the narrative that Hal is playing cheap and for 189, but the more heat the fans put on these guys the more chance that running a team strictly to make profits and not put the best product on the field won’t become the new Yankee way.

  22. slim February 20th, 2013 at 11:27 pm

Anyone know if Pineda is on the major league dl, major league roster not on dl, minor league dl, etc
I believe he has options remaining and they expect him to pitch in the minors initially once recovered
But have no idea his exact status on the roster right now

  23. Jerkface February 20th, 2013 at 11:52 pm

    slim:

Pineda should have all his options, and is currently on the major league roster and will be placed on the 60 day DL at some point going forward. When he rehabs he has a month to play in minor league games before either being activated or optioned.

  24. jacksquat February 20th, 2013 at 11:53 pm

Like I’ve said, I think the only way they ditch the <189 plan is if they think it will cost them more than it will save them.

However, jumping from talking to Cano about a contract to the 189 plan being ditched is a huge leap.

  25. tucker February 20th, 2013 at 11:57 pm

Perhaps the proverbial season ticket renewals are not hitting their historic levels, sending Hal & Co. into a proverbial panic. Signal the team’s intent to spend NEXT year, and maybe some fence-sitting fans will renew their tix this year.

But signing Cano and more of the same (1-year contracts on vets) next offseason won’t cut it.

  26. G. Love February 21st, 2013 at 12:02 am

    jacksquat,

I agree about the huge leap. But I also think the Yankees are dumbfounded their plan to make larger profits by dropping payroll under 189 for a few years wasn’t universally embraced. I think they thought they could sell this fanbase on “we’re not paying other teams lux tax money to beat us” but the fans don’t see winning and losing like a corporate boardroom sees it.

The Yankees owners hate paying money to teams that don’t spend and pocket it.

The fans may not love that concept, but not enough to start losing so we stop paying them.

If we have to pay them, fine. Pay them. But crush them in the process and take their stars when they hit the market.

I think Matthews article is the first of many to come that talk about Hal’s new direction; that being said, the proof is in pudding and if this team needs a bat and they don’t go get one because of $ they’ll have a hard time convincing anyone this is anything other than lip service.

  27. G. Love February 21st, 2013 at 12:06 am

    tucker,

The fans who didn’t renew this year ain’t coming back this year. At this point, they’re looking at the $ saved and picking out a few choice games to go to via the secondary market once it sets itself.

They lost a lot of season ticket fans who they owned over the past 2 seasons and they’ve heard from those fans how this plan to cut costs, sign no one past a year or two and get under 189 isn’t going to fly at these prices.

Now they’re sitting there seeing the actuality of their path and I expect it to change but it’ll be a slow change. I still think Hal is gonna try to get under 189 next season, but if business drops further he won’t be able to risk it.

  28. jacksquat February 21st, 2013 at 12:12 am

Unless we get an official statement, I guess we’ll find out for sure this next offseason.

  29. tucker February 21st, 2013 at 12:51 am

The Matthews column seems a bit strange in timing. Everybody knows that Cano/Boras will test the market, so there is virtually no chance that they resign him before this year. It almost seems like a PR move, frankly. What possible advantage do the Yanks have leaking their intent to spend next year? Doesn’t make sense, unless they are trying to reach their disenchanted fans.

Though resigning Cano is not enough. They starved the chicken too long by passing on the likes of Cespedes and Aroldis Chapman. Even if they do resign Cano, there are still other holes to address …

  30. tucker February 21st, 2013 at 1:00 am

And, really, this is the Graf from Matthews piece that matters (the idea, not the figures that Matthews reported):

In any event, someone within the Yankees organization apparently did the math and came to the conclusion that cutting tens of millions of dollars in payroll would cost the club hundreds of millions in the long run, if only through the devaluing of the brand.

  31. UnKnown February 21st, 2013 at 1:28 am

Looking through those photos taken from today, I hope the dreary cloudy background isn’t an omen for the season.

Also, Girardi looks like he has aged 30 years since taking over in 2008.

  32. Locke February 21st, 2013 at 2:37 am

I’m really surprised that Price would knock the Yankees and Rays in the same interview. He has to know that a lot if his value is based on multiple teams bidding for his services.

I love the talk of ownership bailing on the 189mm. But please hold on to the kids and supplement with FAs.

  33. Frankg February 21st, 2013 at 6:48 am

The management of the Yankees has tended to confirm the saying: More money than brains and they have not proven their ability to operate with more brains than money.

“The fans spoke all winter & their voices were heard. If we were silent little pom pom waiving mice, the team would think they could get away with this.”

Yup….obviously the worry is that Hal will loosen the purse strings for Cano only to tighten them again later….. Which would be a problem

  35. Triple Short of a Cycle February 21st, 2013 at 6:59 am

Price will be traded long before he ever becomes a free agent. He will most likely sign an extension with that team. The Yanks have literally no shot to get him

  36. PacoDooley February 21st, 2013 at 7:08 am

The facial hair policy makes no sense – cannot have a clean cut beard like Price, but can have an ugly moustache like Joba. I agree with Price – the policy sounds anachronistic – like a 1970′s policy that should have died with the Boss. I can understand wanting guys to look relatively clean cut, but a short beard is cleaner cut than an ugly moustache, and to say otherwise really dates you.

Let’s actually wait and see if the $189 goes away before patting ourselves on the back for making $189 go away.

And what’s worse, let’s hope that it isn’t a case of them still aiming for $189 and trying to fit a 10 year $270 mil contract for Cano under it.

Yankees don’t do certain things – they will never have a mascot, never have names on the uniforms and never change the facial hair policy and Derek Jeter is 100% right. If the Yankees were to ever make Price a deal that made sense to him then the first thing Price would buy with his new millions is a razor and some shaving cream.

  39. Mike Ri February 21st, 2013 at 7:29 am

Im not sure why…… but the Joba picture irks me as well…… ……… act your age….

  40. Doreen February 21st, 2013 at 7:32 am

PacoDooley, I agree with you about a neat beard looking better than an ill-conceived mustache. No facial hair should mean no facial hair. But it is a very difficult road to go down if you are going to judge based on “ugly” or nice looking. I think the best you can do is start to specify precisely the type of growth and how long.

So, to me it becomes easier to have a zero facial hair policy for expediency sake. Because the alternative is facial hair that has no bounds (see Brian Wilson).

As for the budget issue, well, at least it would seem they have someone continuing to do the math, so nothing is etched in stone. And just maybe Hal is not as inflexible as he has been portrayed here, his very stoic demeanor notwithstanding. ( does the man EVER smile????)

    ————————

I could care less about his facial hair, frankly I could care less about Joba at this point, this will be his last year with the Yankees. But you’re right, it’s time for him to grow up.

Was there a reason he needed to tell reporters that not only had he reached out to Kevin Youkilis but that he hadn’t heard back from Kevin, thus making it a “thing?”

And then, a year removed breaking his ankle by playing on trampolines, there was a story about him jumping into a laundry cart and asking Boone Logan to push him around the clubhouse.

  42. MTU February 21st, 2013 at 7:33 am

    Good morning.

Color me skeptical until I see Young Stein pull the trigger on going over 189.

My hypothesis is that he wishes to sell at some point.

If true then only a season which endangers his ability to sell at an optimum price would deter him.

As I have said in the past I will be more than glad to eat a double helping of crow if I’m wrong.

Go ahead Hal. Prove me wrong.

While it’s nice to hear the $189m budget might get tossed out the window, it’s really concerning to see the vision of this organization change rather suddenly. Hell, I’d rather see the front office and ownership have conviction behind their decision making, than twisting and turning due to public pressure. Do they know what they’re doing?

If they sign Cano, they’ve got to kiss that budget goodbye. They’ve got so much risk already in A-Rod, Tex and CC. Adding another megacontract means we’ve got to supplement even more overpaid/underperforming players at the backend of their contracts.

These things just can’t end well.
