Bogarts is playing for the Netherlands this morning if anyone wants to say the next Red Sox superstar of all time (this kid actually might be the real deal though )

  2. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 8:19 am

    Blake-

Guys whose first name begins w an “X” are always suspect.

    Take Nady as example.

Time for the most important meal of the Day.

    :)

I’d like to see Mesa make the team as left fielder and Mustelier also. Mustelier has really impressed me with the bat and his OF glove has made all the plays. Almonte needs some more defensive work. I watched him take a bad route and let a popup fall in for a single off Kahnle yesterday.

  4. blake March 2nd, 2013 at 8:22 am

This guy for brazil is throwing like 70 mph

  5. blake March 2nd, 2013 at 8:22 am

Mesa doesn’t get cheated up there…..as JF said yesterday though…Rivera is hitting and if he does he will probably make it because he’s old and old trumps young

  6. RadioKev March 2nd, 2013 at 8:24 am

Our buddy Matt Diaz is starting in LF. Isn’t that cute?

  7. Rich in NJ March 2nd, 2013 at 8:26 am

    Stew is cuter.

  8. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 8:27 am

    How are Rivera and/or Diaz’s splits ?

If they are not good then they should platoon.

I was hoping that guy might be Almonte but as YT points out his D still needs work.

Mustelier seems to use the whole field. Garcia seems skilled as well.

I hope they do not just go w. 2 vets and ignore the youngsters.

  9. blake March 2nd, 2013 at 8:32 am

    “How are Rivera and/or Diaz’s splits ?”

    Can’t hit RHP at all….

  10. Yankee Trader March 2nd, 2013 at 8:33 am

Joey Votto born 9/10/83. Agent Dan Lozano. Contract 10 years 225M to age 40.

Robinson Cano born 10/22/82. Agent Scott Boras.

Figure no less than 9 years for Cano, and maybe the same 225M making it 25M/year, because he plays a premium position.

I wouldn’t be in a hurry to have him sign an extension-rather wait until mid season and see how the Yankees are doing.

Color me totally off base! :)

  11. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 8:34 am

    Blake-

And neither is all that good of a defender.

Sounds like they need to hit only, or mostly, against lefties then.

So who’s your pick to handle the other portion ? Almonte’s D looks a little shaky.

Can Mustelier or Garcia handle righties ?

  12. austinmac March 2nd, 2013 at 8:36 am

    MTU,

Made it to Big Bend. Very interesting. I did throw a rock to Mexico. Of course, it was only about 50 feet.

You can be Maynard G. Krebs, but stay away from Zelda Gilroy.

  13. Yankee Trader March 2nd, 2013 at 8:38 am

I only say the last few innings of yesterday’s game. What did you think of Preston Claiborne? I thought I saw a 101 registered on the radar gun vs Tyson Gillies of the Phillies.

  14. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 8:38 am

    Mac-

Send photos if you get a chance.

I’m heading out to the North Rim tomorrow. Looking forward to that.

I’ll take your advice on Zelda.

    ;)

  15. austinmac March 2nd, 2013 at 8:38 am

I didn’t like the way Almonte went after the fly ball yesterday. He can hit though, I think.

Aren’t the games more fun if a young guy is playing rather than Diaz?

  16. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 8:39 am

    Mac-

    Let’s compromise.

Take 1 vet and 1 youngster.

    :)

  17. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 8:41 am

    YT-

I’m more impressed w. Kahnle. That kid can bring it.

    I’d never seen him before.

  18. austinmac March 2nd, 2013 at 8:41 am

    YT,

If the Yankees are not in contention, Cano should be traded at the deadline. We should not be the only team that simply lets their free agents walk.

  19. Yankee Trader March 2nd, 2013 at 8:42 am

    MTU-

I believe every hit by Mustelier has been off a righty. I’ve seen him take the ball to RF for singles at least 3 times, and yesterday the non wind aided homer off a righty on a good pitch was to RF.

  20. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 8:43 am

    Mac-

The Yankees are about as likely to trade Cano at the ASB as it was for the Pope to resign.

  21. austinmac March 2nd, 2013 at 8:44 am

    MTU,

I say Almonte and either Rivera, Mustelier or Garcia. The latter two are in their prime baseball years. Now is the time if there will ever be a time for them.

  22. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 8:44 am

    YT-

OK then. Rivera or Diaz and Ronnier.

    That works for me.

    :)

  23. austinmac March 2nd, 2013 at 8:46 am

    MTU,

I agree on the trade likelihood. I disagree with the rumors I will be the next Pope. Nor do I think Ryan Pope will ever pitch in the majors.

  24. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 8:47 am

    Mac-

Zoilo’s D might hold him back.

The Yankees prize good D. Seems to be able to lay wood on the ball though.

  25. Yankee Trader March 2nd, 2013 at 8:47 am

On Mustelier. Is his OF defense really bad? It seems like, the times I’ve watched him, that he made all the plays in LF and RF. He made a nice play going back to the warning track in RF, holding onto the ball after some “fool” tried to wrestle him to the ground after straight-arming him. :)

    Can’t he also play 2nd and 3rd?

  26. Tar March 2nd, 2013 at 8:50 am

For Tex that was a routine scoop.

  27. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 8:50 am

    YT-

I think Adonis is the better all round defender ( he can play CF). Ronnier might have the advantage w the bat.

Did see Garcia go the other way to drive in Austin the other day.

  28. Tar March 2nd, 2013 at 8:58 am

2 errors on korea in the first (2B and SS). Both plays would have been routine if they Tex at 1B.

I really like having a great defender at 1B. I know how frustrating he can be with the bat and the whole left side open , but you can’t discount what he brings defensively. I’m glad to have him

  29. austinmac March 2nd, 2013 at 8:58 am

Outfield offense must be the focus. They need offense with so many losses this year. If they can survive with Ibanez, Mustelier and Almonte can survive.

  30. Yankee Trader March 2nd, 2013 at 9:00 am

Mustelier played at AAA, Adonis Garcia at AA. I’m not sold yet on keeping Juan Rivera to hit vs lefties. At this point, and it’s still early, I like the outfield bats, in order-Mustelier, Almonte, Mesa, Garcia.

  31. blake March 2nd, 2013 at 9:02 am

Zoologicals defense can’t be worse than Riveras

  32. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 9:02 am

    YT-

    Mesa is the best defender.

Ronnier might have the best bat.

I say we do some grafting.

    :)

  33. blake March 2nd, 2013 at 9:02 am

Rivera isn’t even the best Rivera on the team at outfield and that’s with Mo having a bionic knee

  34. Tar March 2nd, 2013 at 9:06 am

I can’t remember exactly when it was, but I have a vivid picture of Rivera jogging lackadaisically after a fly ball by a Yankee. Think it dropped in for a double. I’ll pass on Rivera.

  35. MTU March 2nd, 2013 at 9:07 am

    Time to walk the Mops.

Here’s a few local shots to start your day off right.

I haven’t posted any in a while so I figured I owed ya’ some.

    Enjoy.

    Later.

    —————————
Agree. The team has shown very little offense and at 1-7 with so many errors,it’s time to trim the roster down from 81 players. They had 20 more players in ST than the lowly Astros the other day.

I hope one of those players make the team to replace Granderson in the outfield. They get a good look and it helps determine if Granderson is traded later in the year, or let loose in FA.

  37. blake March 2nd, 2013 at 9:10 am

“I really like having a great defender at 1B. I know how frustrating he can be with the bat and the whole left side open , but you can’t discount what he brings defensively. I’m glad to have him”

I think much like with Hughes…. We need to try and get past what Tex was supposed to be and appreciate what he can do.

Tex is overpaid….he’s not the cornerstone bat they signed….,however he’s an excellent defender….he’s a power bat from the left side and I still think he can be an elite bat vs LHP…..so we just have to hope he maximizes the things he can do…..

  38. blake March 2nd, 2013 at 9:11 am

@LoHudYankees: Melky Mesa has told the Yankees that he’s no longer playing in the WBC.

    Wise choice

  39. austinmac March 2nd, 2013 at 9:13 am

I would far prefer to see one of the younger guys play than Diaz. He has fallen even behind Rivera for me, and that takes something.

Play Almonte, Garcia, Mustelier and Mesa and see them play enough to make informed choices among them.

  40. austinmac March 2nd, 2013 at 9:14 am

Mesa said he would stay if the Yankees asked him. Does this suggest the Yankees asked him to stay implying he has a chance to make the team?

I think it would imply that he thinks he has a chance

  43. austinmac March 2nd, 2013 at 9:20 am

Lohse must be getting pretty antsy by now. I would guess Texas on a one or two year deal. But, is it possible he has to wait until after the draft when a pick will no longer be lost?

  44. Yankee Trader March 2nd, 2013 at 9:20 am

    Blake-

    Teixeira:
276 out of 451 at bats vs righties-61%
batted .239 vs righties with .438 slugging average
    overall batted .218 at YS
Had 5 less doubles from left side and only 4 more homers. 14 of the 24 were against righties and of the 24 homers, evenly split home and away.

How can one feel optimistic with hitting him cleanup vs righties with those numbers?

“How can one feel optimistic with hitting him cleanup vs righties with those numbers?”

Again you have to have perspective I think…..he’s not going to be 2009 Tex again….he’s just not….he’s in decline…….but I do think he can hit some homers vs RHP and still be a good hitter vs lefties.

Ideally he’d hit 6th or so in the lineup…..but they don’t have many hitters better than him right now unfortunately.
