Cashman breaks ankle skydiving
Thank you to everyone who joined today’s chat.
If you missed it, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman broke his ankle during today’s skydiving event. He did it on his second jump, having agreed to go again after a successful touchdown in his first attempt.
John Harper from the Daily News was there and has some pictures.
This is, of course, a punchline waiting to happen. By all means, enjoy yourselves.

If the Yankees were under the luxury tax limit for 2 seasons they will be guaranteed to get 100% of the revenue sharing rebates. It doesn’t affect the luxury tax rate at all. It will be reset if they go under 1 year.
Sorry, third time’s the charm?

Larry Stone’s take on Mike trout is again as stupid as the rest of the media. The Cards gave Pujols a lot of bonus money on his pre-arb contracts and they got NO benefit later on down the road. Teams have SET raises based on service time, all they did was treat Trout like every other player in baseball gets treated.
I highly doubt he would give them a nice break on a later deal. He probably wouldn’t even remember it when he hits free agency.
I hear Damon Oppenheimer is getting called up from the minors.
////
I’m all for upgrades, on and off the field
. And this would be a big one…
There has been no evidence of a team benefiting from giving a bonus in non-arb contracts. The contract renewal doesn’t stop them from doing a new extension (which can also give him more money this year) if Trout wants to stay an angel.
Giving him money now doesn’t save them money later, and when he is a free agent he will be going for the most money regardless. No rationale to making a special exception for him.
Yeah, that was nicely played, Chip.
Ever since the Montero Trade, Cashman has been on a downward spiral. It would be my guess that he was neutered by Hal, immediately after the extortion\stalker mess last offseason. We know he had to hand-off the Ichiro trade, and at the Winter Meetings he had the power to do squat. All he does anymore is scale buildings, speak outta turn, and jump outta airplanes. Soon he will be challenging the Guiness Book of World Records for Longest wait in the unemployment line.

I think the feeling was that the AA outfield would be packed with Zoilo in RF/Slade in CF and Flores in LF and that may still be how the rosters open the season.
However I think the Yanks should be a little more aggressive with these guys based on what they’ve shown so far.
Again assuming Mesa makes the team then I would start Zoilo in RF in Scranton with Musty in LF.
In Trenton I’d go with Flores in LF/Slade in CF and Tyler Austin in RF to begin the season
In Tampa I’d put Mason in CF with maybe Gamel in LF and Kelvin De Leon and 1 of my 2013 sleeper prospects Eladio Moronta in RF.
If Slade comes firing out of the gate then I promote him to Scranton and promote Mason to Trenton with Gary Sanchez. That would entail JR Murphy also starting off hot which I believe he will.
The Yanks minor league system I think will by season’s end again be a top 5 system as they may have Zoilo,Slade,Tyler Austin ,Corbin Joseph, JR Murphy and Austin Romine all at AAA
With Gary Sanchez, Mason Williams, Anderson Feliz, Angelo Gumbs, Jose Ramirez, Nick Turley, Bryan Mitchell and maybe Jose Campos in AA.
That Charleston team again will be stacked with the likes of Greg Byrd, Jake Cave, Matt Duran, Pete O’Brien, Miguel Andujar, Ravel Santana, Claudio Custodio, Rafael DePaula,Ty Hensley.

@Chip what about Cargo? He signed an extension but was he an impending free agent?
Cashman is a tool. Midlife crisis victim that has shown to Yankee fans that he has outlasted his usefulness. Sit on your hands and do your job! Charity work is commendable but why do stupid things not once but twice….Brian, it’s time to accept, WE ALL AGE!!!!!
If Nolan Ryan defects from the Rangers where might he land…?
The only thing that could get me to jump (again) out of a perfectly good airplane is the Wounded Warriors Project. Good for Cashman. GB7 would approve.
Houston?

LOL, that would be amazing.
What a jackass.
“Cashman is a tool.”
Yup.
Very edifying in here.

No he wasn’t.
I wonder if Joba walks up to Cashman, shakes his head and calls him a dumbass.
@DKnobler
Torre also suggested that he expects his starting position players to be ready to play 9 innings.

*gasp!*

I was curious if anyone would suggest it lol. What role would he play for the Yanks? CEO? GM? Director of Pitching Development?

A role in the pitching development. Maybe he has some insight on pitchers and what he did with the Rangers

I never saw Ichiro when he was that young.

Chip I know you brought Nardi and his role as senior pitching instructor. It was brought up on RAB but no one had a clear cut answer.
I don’t get why Nardi is still in the system…

“I don’t get why Nardi is still in the system…”
Connors is still employed as well, right?
It’s crazy.
All the youtubes are down, glad Patrick found another link. Ichiro’s sweater from that time is amazing.
I feel bad for Cash. The event was for charity. Nobody could have imagined that Cash
would break his ankle today.
I wonder if Cash will have the same rehab that Joba and Jeter had in 2012?
Nardi must have pictures of Cashman or something.
My sincere hope is that Patterson’s role is senior to Nardi. I just can’t imagine two successful and well regarded guys like Patterson and Rothschild taking their marching orders from someone as inept as Contreras.
Maybe “Senior Pitching Instructor” means that of all the coaches that Patterson employs in the minor league system, Nardi is the most senior but that he has no real authority. Kind of like the Queen of England.

For charity or not, there’s got to be something wrong with a person to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.
“Nardi must have pictures of Cashman or something.”
I think Stewart may have some of Girardi.
Rich
Speaking of Stewie and Cervelli, while watching the game yesterday Flaherty brought up the subject of the catchers in camp and how Romine still has an option remaining(to be sent down to the minors)
Regardless of how excited some of us, including me were when thinking that Romine could
go up north after ST this year, I really don’t think that would be possible(barring an Injury).
I think the Yankees all along had a plan for Romine.
Slowly ease him into ST and send him to AAA.

No, I think Girardi is just using his post to strike a blow for offensively inept catchers everywhere.
Cashman gonna put himself on the DL ?
Maybe ‘Cash’ can get some help from one of Arod’s FL. doc’s ?
I think George guaranteed a few guys (Nardi, Connors, Reggie…) jobs in the organization for life and the next generation of Steinbrenners is just making good on that. A paycheck and a title now with little in the way of responsibility.
Was nice of Cash to do the jumps for charity. Now maybe the ‘Golden Knights’ an take up a collection for him.
Poor Brian………….
Connors has a golf cart with his name on it on a piece of tape down in Tampa.
True story…I saw it.
Cashman does something most of you would never dare to do, and gets hurt. Makes him even a bigger jerk than many of you thought before. He jumped with the finest parachute unit in the world, for one of the most worthy charities this country has.
I used to jump out of airplanes in the nation’s service, for $55.00 extra dollars, over my base pay of $371 per month (maybe $800 today). Never got hurt the way Cashman did, just scrapes and bruises from landing in the woods a couple of times. I enjoyed it, but left it behind. The Golden Knights feel worse about this than anyone. Most people never do anything for anyone but themselves, Cashman did. Good for him.
Put Cashman in the same category as Chamberlin—lack judgment, expendable, and easy to replace.
