Interesting
I think in the next few games he’s going to look at all the configurations to decide which trio he likes best:
Ichiro – Gardner – Almonte
Rivera – Gardner – Ichiro
Gardner – Mesa – Ichiro
My guess is that he settles on the third one with Mesa because of the fact that Almonte hasn’t played above AA yet. Whereas Melky’s arbitration clock is already started anyway.

Cano’s dad thinks he’s staying in NY:

he mentions a 6 or 7 year deal – the NYY would love that – $150 for 6 years anyone?

What? Mesa has plenty of options. Same with Zoilo. Neither’s arbitration clock is ticking.

I don’t see any way Robbie takes that deal.
Look at what Fielder and Votto got. Cano plays a more valuable position than both of them, why should he settle for less money?

Thought that once you got major league service time your arbitration clock starts. If I’m wrong on that, my bad.
Maybe Cano’s dad would take that ….his son….sorta doubt it. I don’t think they’ll be able to keep him for less than 200 million…..

I meant to say 6/$160MM or maybe 6/$170MM – meant to suggest a higher AAV and lower total. I agree 100% that he won’t take $150MM or 6/$170MM – players are not really in a position to maximize annual average value at his age, they are out to maximize total contract size. I doubt he gets that AAV ($28.3MM), but he will probably get a lot more total dollars (8/$200MM?).
Of course, the fact that someone would turn down a huge premium in annual
If Ichiro can be moved around why can’t Granderon?

?? What is ‘arbitration clock’? You gain service by playing in the majors. Days on the major league roster. Melky has 0 because he got called up in september only. He has an option left. Zoilo has 2 I think. You became a free agent when you reach 6 years of service time, which means having 6 years worth of time on the active roster or major league disabled list.
This should be the opening day oF if facing a RHP
Cano launches one
So not really plenty of options. But he does have an option. Melky won’t be anymore sooner a free agent than Almonte, unless one or the other plays in the major leagues.
If Melky spent all this year on the team he’d be a free agent in 2019. If Almonte spent all year on the team he’d be a free agent in 2019. If either got optioned it would push it back a year. And with Almonte they could push it back 2 years.

Honestly, if Granderson was healthy it would be done. I don’t think Girardi wants to ask Curtis to do it during the regular season without first getting a chance to see it in Spring Training. He said it going in, he wanted to see how it would look before making a decision about a regular season lineup.
We may not agree with the decision but he’s sticking with it. He’s not going to move Granderson to LF without first seeing him there.

I dont understand why anyone would need to look at it. Its a no brainer.
Arbitration clock = years until you are eligible for arbitration. But turns out I’m wrong on that so thanks for the correction.
Still, Mesa has played at the ML level (and AAA level) while Almonte hasn’t broken AA yet so I would think he has the slight edge. Also, if Girardi is set on going with:
Gardner – Granderson – Ichiro
then taking Melky upsets less of the apple cart than does Almonte.

I don’t agree with his decision, but to play Devil’s advocate – remember what happened when the Mets through Mike Cameron into RF and he and Beltran nearly killed each other? Those two guys had played the entire season together and still had problems. Maybe he wants to make sure that the same thing didn’t happen with Granderson and Gardner.
Chip
Granderson has already played LF.
If he really messes up, they can always put him back in CF very quickly. He will then have done less defensive harm than say Nunez has already done.
Gardner and Ichiro will very likely be in here in 2014, Granderson very likely won’t.
They should be where they are likely to be for a while.
Sure would like to know exactly Who Theo wants from the Yanks for Soriano. Also, If Theo has Not even received a Yankee inquiry.
Chip,
I think you’re right on the reasons that Melky may get the call over Almonte, I was just confused by the reference to the arbitration clock which I’ve seen made on other sites to similar confusion.
I don’t think field collisions should be a concern that stops them from making the correct defensive switch. In that case why bring in any new OFer? Granderson won’t have played with any of them and they will run the same risk.

Not for Joe Girardi he hasn’t.
As for 2014 – it’s very possible that Mesa or Heathcott will be the opening day CF.

Again, devil’s advocate – but as a CF for most of his career Granderson is used to having “right of way” in the OF; move him to left without a spring training to adjust and he might have an issue getting used to being called off.
Is this game on MLBNETWORK?
“As for 2014 – it’s very possible that Mesa or Heathcott will be the opening day CF.”
I don’t think that’s likely.
blake,
At least hee, it is.
“here”
Good deal….should be a fun game….I hope the Beaves play their regulars
Rich,
Well they’re going to need 3 outfielders and unless one of them is Tyler Austin, then either Ichiro is going to open in LF with Zoilo Almonte in RF or Gardner’s going to open in LF with Mesa or Heathcott in CF.

They won’t play Justin Upton – they’re going to trade him to the Yankees during the game though.
I think it’s possible both Austin and Heathcott will be ready next year….
Chip
I would be shocked if both Heathcott and Austin are in the starting OF in 2014.
I think what’s most likely to happen is that Gardner is their CF, as long he stays healthy, through 2014.
Unless of course they use the money that they’re not going to give Cano and then sign both Ellsbury and McCann…
“They won’t play Justin Upton – they’re going to trade him to the Yankees during the game though.”
Lol….he will win an MVP with the Braves in his 3 years there and probably finish top 10 in the voting all three years…..
blake,
My mistake. It’s on CSS and YES, but not MLB Network

Well if that’s the case then they will cross that bridge when they get there. Gardner doesn’t need a full season to prepare for playing CF in 2014

Crap
It’s on MLB Network coming through the CSN feed.
Can’t keep up to the new posts:
Yeah, a hundred pitchers in camp, all with talent to get signed. They might as well use chicken entrails or cast horoscopes. All the top pitching talent is hurt or getting there. The tragedy of Christian Garcia.
And don’t get me started on position players. Montero at sixteen, ripped like a Hercules. Heh, this is a guy that screams “muscle bound”. “This is our catching prospect, catlike reflexes”
What is wrong with these people?

Blake -
I tend to agree on Ellsbury – though I would be tempted at 3 years $13/year.
I would try to get McCann on a similar deal. That combo is a lot better, in my opinion, than giving Robbie $26/year for 8 years.
Chip
OK. We’re both powerless, and I don’t have to like it. It just seems like such an obvious move given their need to prevent runs. I mean, if Stew is the starting catcher, but they don’t take advantage of Gardner’s significantly better defense in CF? But….
“I would try to get McCann on a similar deal. That combo is a lot better, in my opinion, than giving Robbie $26/year for 8 years.”
For those prices maybe….Id save for Headley/Andrus rather than sign Ellsbury
I would love Headley/Andrus.
Later.

I woukd have liked Austin to stay around bit I know he needs to play more to get ready for the season

Agreed. And the catchers had to go so that the minor league pitchers would have people to throw to.
Blake -
Why sign Andrus – we have EDUARDO NUNEZ
Interesting that Flores and Heathcott are still around
“Blake -

I posted a couple of days ago that in an interview Cash actually mentioned Heathcotts name as a potential Granderson replacement…..he said it last like “even a youngster like Heathcott” but sounded like they werent ruling it out entirely
Time for the Phillies to invoke the Mercy Rule. Damn, the DR can hit.
24 hits for the DR, so far, 13 runs.
Thanks to Doreen for posting that WSJ piece earlier.
I’m a big believer in stretching and do it regularly.
Too bad I’m not a sports athlete or a gazilllionaire because I’d love to get my hands on some of that funky equipment.
I wouldn’t abandon traditional weight training routines/machines but they would certainly be beneficial.
Is this game on YES tonight?
@AnthonyMcCarron: Mark Teixeira was scratched from Team USA’s lineup for an exhibition game today because of a sore forearm.

blake, of that bunch, the only one I really will miss is Austin.
I would have liked to seem Sanchez more but he’s not playing much anyway and he needs to go play
blake – Exactly, about Sanchez.
