A matchup of old friends (with video)

In the name of fairness — after posting video of a Derek Jeter strikeout this morning — here’s a Derek Jeter single. It came in his fourth at-bat against Andy Pettitte this morning, the one hit in Jeter’s 1-for-5 day against his old friend (might have been 1-for-6, but I’m willing to give him a walk in the final plate appearance).
“But it’s simulated, so it’s not that big of a deal,” Pettitte said. “It was a lot stranger when I was pitching for the Astros and came over here to pitch against them.”
In 2005, Pettitte came to Tampa to face Jeter [2] and the rest of his long-time teammates in a spring training game. Jeter tripled off Pettitte that day, and Pettitte said he still hears about it all the time. Jeter made sure the writers knew about it this morning.
“When we’re old and stuff and we come back for Old Timers Day, I’ll probably face him again,” Jeter said back in 2005.
Turns out, they didn’t have to wait that long.

By the way, Pettitte pitched three innings this morning. The other hitters were Hector Rabago and Casey Stevenson, up from minor league camp. Pettitte said he expects to pitch in a game next week.
“I felt good,” Pettitte said. “I didn’t feel like I was quite as sharp as the last time out as far as the command of my fastball, but everything else felt pretty good.”
