That’s an awful small badg at 3B for Musty and Youkilis to share.

    :)

    Morning MG.

There have been times in recent years where I did not like Cashman, or Management’s attitude toward certain players.

I am of the belief that negotiations, in particular, should not be commented on in public until they are complete.

In fact, I do not believe any dirty laundry should be aired in public.
    ———————————
Morning MTU-I agree that negotiations between player and team should be private, there is absolutely no reason for the public to get information like ‘Jorge used the Mets to get another year from the Yankees’.

Negotiations are just that, negotiations, and teams, players and agents use whatever they can to get the best deal for themselves, it’s just the nature of the business.

You close the book and move on afterwards.

  4. Yankee Trader March 11th, 2013 at 8:21 am

    Good morning-

The Yankees started with 81 players in camp. How many remain?

  5. MG March 11th, 2013 at 8:23 am

Based on the increased visibility of Mustelier in the press over the past few days you have to think the 3B job is his for the grabbing right now-he just needs to keep hitting and play acceptable defense, i.e, catch ground balls and don’t throw anything in the stands.

  6. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:23 am

    MG-

It makes it harder to close the book when people have been disrespected.

But you’re right, ultimately you move on.

  7. Yankee Trader March 11th, 2013 at 8:24 am

    Good morning MTU and MG-

    Late to the Breakfast Club.

What are the main topics for discussion this morning, besides “Play Musty for Me.”

  8. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:25 am

    I’m pulling for Ronnier.

    Fresh blood will be good.

  9. austinmac March 11th, 2013 at 8:26 am

    YT,

I read 64 players remained, I believe on Saturday.

It is interesting Heathcott is starting well into spring training.

  10. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:27 am

    Morning YT.

The Georgia sales territory is still available.

    :)

  11. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:34 am

Most impressive young arms this ST: Ramirez, Marshall, and Nuno.

Rondon has looked pretty good too.

Here are the Yankee Spring Training Stats:

  13. austinmac March 11th, 2013 at 8:36 am

Ramirez is the most impressive while Nuno is making me wonder whether he can help. He looks like he can throw a number of pitches for strikes. Ramirez looks like a top flight starter.

  14. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:39 am

    Mac-

The Yankees are loaded for bear in a number of departments.

Just need the kids to stay healthy and continue their progression.

    The fruit is getting ripe.

It might be available for picking soon.

  15. Chip March 11th, 2013 at 8:40 am

Yankees have asked Derrick Lee if he’s interested in returning to baseball….

  16. austinmac March 11th, 2013 at 8:41 am

They still are severely short in infield prospects. I do like the pitching and outfield prospects.

  17. Yankee Trader March 11th, 2013 at 8:44 am

Who deserves the swing/long man, 6th starter, spot? I don’t believe Hughes will break camp with the Yankees, remaining in Tampa for more rehab.

    Contenders:
The most impressive rookie has been Jose Ramirez [A], followed by lefty 25 yo Vidal Nuno [AA], then Marshall [AAA] and Warren [AAA].

    Others?

  18. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:44 am

We have these arms : Marshall, Warren,Banuelos, Nuno nearly ready.

With these in the pipeline: Ramirez, DePaula, Hensley, Campos.

And we have these OF guys : Heathcott, Austin, Williams, and Flores.

And these C prospects: Sanchez and Murphy.

FWIS that’s a lot of talent.

  19. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:47 am

    Mac-

That is why I said we should be creative and try to do some MiLb to MiLb swaps, etc.

Gumbs, Adams, Musty, and Nunez all have potential value. I’d love to see Nunez get back to fielding well at SS.

  20. Chip March 11th, 2013 at 8:47 am

    Trader – It’ll be Warren.

  21. Chip March 11th, 2013 at 8:48 am

    MTU -

I don’t think he’s ever fielded well at SS.

  22. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:48 am

And our supply of future BP arms is almost limitless.

    ;)

  23. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:50 am

    Chip-

He has. He had a year in MiLB’s where he may have almost won a GG. I forget which year it was.

If he can do it once he can do it again under the right circumstances.

    ;)

  24. pat March 11th, 2013 at 8:51 am

In SBJ, MLBPA, agents taking look whether new free agent compensation rules interfered w players’ markets, such as situations like Lohse

  25. austinmac March 11th, 2013 at 8:51 am

Gumbs is the infielder I have the most hopes for. Adams, if he can be healthy, may be a major leaguer as well. Gumbs has ability if he can harness it.

I do agree trade positions of depth for positions of need.

  26. Yankee Trader March 11th, 2013 at 8:52 am

    Chip-

Bobby Abreu is still out there. :)

“The Best Hitter You’ve Never Heard Of”

Jose Abreu is putting up godlike numbers in the closed-off world of Cuba.

By Jonah Keri on February 22, 2012PRINTA

    .453 batting average; .597 on-base percentage; .986 slugging percentage. Thirty-three homers and 93 runs batted in … in 212 at-bats.

  27. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:54 am

    YT-

Get down to Cuba and get him for us.

    :)

  28. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 8:56 am

    Mac-

The talent in the system is there in many areas.

  29. Chip March 11th, 2013 at 8:57 am

How about sending Ramon Flores to the Braves for Pastornicky?

  30. Yankee Trader March 11th, 2013 at 9:00 am

    MTU-

You’re closer. Jose Abreu will be in San Francisco for the next round of the WBC, with his Cuban teammates.

  31. Chip March 11th, 2013 at 9:00 am

If David Phelps goes ahead and wins the 5 spot might the Yankees trade Nova?

  32. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 9:00 am

    Chip-

Unfortunately, MiLB to MiLB swaps are pretty rare.

I’d like to see more of it.

Just as I would like to see draft pick swapping.

Baseball needs to get more creative.

    ;)

  33. blake March 11th, 2013 at 9:01 am

Love that Chad is calling him Musty now….also cool that apparently they are giving him a real chance here…..also cool to see Slade get a start here.

  34. blake March 11th, 2013 at 9:03 am

    Chip says:

If David Phelps goes ahead and wins the 5 spot might the Yankees trade Nova?

Hard to do that til they know the status of Hughes back….and even then I doubt it unless it’s a real impact player they are getting

  35. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 9:03 am

    YT-

Sounds like a job for Nick.

    Chip-

I have thought we should have used one of the arms in a trade package before.

If we couldn’t extend Hughes, or re-sign him he might have been another option. Hate to lose him for a frickin’ draft pick.

    ;)

  36. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 9:04 am

    Blake-

We talked about that real impact player all OS.

    :(

    mtu-

jeter and posada were worked into a line up loaded with veterans.

    look at 1996:
    tino martinez,boggs,bernie williams(age 27) oneil,sierra, strawberry, raines, fielder,etc

i think if you bring up a whole lot of the young guys at one time, you’ll have kids teaching kids. i think they’ll learn how to lose together. what jeter did was learn from sone of the biggest names in the game. he was THE kid, and not one of the kids.

too many young players means losing for awhile. now i’m back to hal’s ill fated plan.
it’s based on overly counting on young players. if there are 10 young players who look like prospects, maybe two will have good mlb careers.

most won’t make it. the two that will make it will do better if they are introduced into the fray with mostly veteran star players already there. i don’t see a whole batch of young players moving in and doing well together.

so even this year, if they can get a young guy into the mix it would help the process. waiting until 2014 and 2015 and flooding the team with this young fruit from the minor leagues would be too much at once.

  38. Yankee Trader March 11th, 2013 at 9:09 am

I actually think Nova has more upside then Phil Hughes. Jose Ramirez has a better CU than Hughes. Once Ramirez developes a curve he could be a top-flight starter.

  39. blake March 11th, 2013 at 9:14 am

@LoHudYankees: Michael Pineda throwing a full bullpen tomorrow, 35 pitches including sliders for the first time since shoulder surgery. #yankees

  40. blake March 11th, 2013 at 9:14 am

@jaysonst: Phil Hughes after throwing 26 pitches in bullpen this morning: “today was a big step. (Felt) just like a normal bullpen…Just let it go.”

  41. yankeefeminista March 11th, 2013 at 9:15 am

Ramirez hasn’t been able to spin a curve. That was why he was being talked up for the pen, which I have been vehemently against b/c i thiught he could develop the breaking pitch and the CU and FB are plus or better. However, his slider was flashing plus in Instructs last year and has been pretty good if incinsistent; it will be the key to his advancing, but the CB ship has sailed.

  42. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 9:17 am

    Randy-

    I’m w you.

Need a Captain at the helm to get it right.

I have tried to take what I thought was a balanced approach to prospects.

Most are either destined to fail, or be used to aquire other things.

Do the Yankees self-scout well these days ?

If they don’t they better improve it.

To do anything less would be to misuse or even waste valuable resources.

I favor a 3-pronged strategy for success: Strategic acquisition of FA, trades, and Farm development.

If those pieces are brought together well you get the Dynasty all over again.

    :)

  43. yankeefeminista March 11th, 2013 at 9:19 am

Sorry for typos: darn iPhone didn’t correct anything. It’s still pre-cup of morning tea. Fun lineup today. Or as fun as it gets. ;)

  44. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 9:20 am

    YF-

Sounds like all he needs is a 3rd look.

A split might work for him too.

I’m sorry it appears to be the forgotten pitch sometimes.

Not all guys can throw it but they can it’s usally super effective.

It’s no more hard on the arm than a constant barrage of sliders.

  46. austinmac March 11th, 2013 at 9:25 am

I have seen a few workable sliders from Ramirez. Please, not to the pen.

  47. Yankee Trader March 11th, 2013 at 9:27 am

    Randy-

The Yankees have too many potential holes to fill if they lose all their free agents-
Kuroda, Pettitte, Hughes, Logan, Chamberlain, Aardsma and hitters, Cano, Granderson, Youkilis, Hafner, and retiring Rivera.

Then they either extend or let Gardner and Robertson test free agency the following year, and Ichiro is gone.

Too many holes to fill with expensive established players.

Growing pains with rookies might have to be the norm, even if they break the bank and extend/resign Cano and add another pitcher thru free agency, that puts them over the 189M [closer to 177M in AAV salaries to account for player benefits].

    mtu-

as you know hal has wiped out the one third of the equation that the yankees have a strategic advantage, the free agent signings.

no sabathia and no teixeira and no 2009.

hal is a problem. he is going to have to have his plan fail on the field before he abandons it.
of course at no time will he take the blame when it fails. he’ll blame injuries. like the red sox ownership did when they imploded.

teixeria and granderson work out for him. it’s a built in excuse.
