Romine sent to minor league camp

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 11, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Austin Romine will not be on the major league roster. He was the first truly significant cut of big league camp. Here are today’s moves.

· Optioned and LHP Francisco Rondon, RHPs Dellin Betances and Brett Marshall, and C Austin Romine to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

· Optioned LHPs Manny Banuelos and Nik Turley, RHP Jose Ramirez and OF Ramon Flores to Double-A Trenton.

· Reassigned RHP Chase Whitley, C J.R. Murphy and 1B Luke Murton to minor league camp.

The last three were “reassigned” only because they aren’t on the 40-man roster and can’t be optioned. That’s the only difference.

Congrats Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart, you’re The Next Top Catcher

  2. Doreen March 11th, 2013 at 5:22 pm

It might be easier to list who is left in camp …

    ***
If I recall the Kuroda signing and the trade for Pineda were on the heels of one another, with Pineda coming first by a whisper, correct? Heck, I thought signing CC negated the need for another pitcher!!

    ***

Glad Betances got 2 innings in today. Romine really didn’t get a good look. I suppose his only shot was if Cervelli was gawdawful, which he has not been. Also, I think theyr’e sticking to their guns about him getting work in the minors (he did lose almost full season last year, so though we may not all like it, it does make sense).

Looks like Heathcott, Mesa, Almonte and Mustelier are still hanging around the major league camp – or did I miss something?

  3. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 5:25 pm

Romine had an option and the others didn’t.

Guess they preferred not to lose Stewart.

Also might have thought that Romine could use a little more seasoning at AAA.

If he does well he should be back soon.

There are no surprises among the others.

  4. Doreen March 11th, 2013 at 5:25 pm

And I guess a bunch of infielders are left? Until Cano comes back and they know what they’re getting from Jeter?

Yup they’re still in it. Corban Joeseph and Pirela are still around to act as IFers with cano out.

  7. Against All Odds March 11th, 2013 at 5:26 pm

Can’t believe Heathcott is still around

  8. austinmac March 11th, 2013 at 5:31 pm

I’m surprised Heathcott is around too. I think that means the top guys want a better assessment whether he can help later in the year.

  9. MTU March 11th, 2013 at 5:35 pm

I’ll be happy if they take Ronnier North.

    Anything more is gravy.

  10. tomingeorgia March 11th, 2013 at 5:40 pm

    mister MTU,
Reverend Tom struck again this weekend, and has some ribs on the smoker tonight. No gravy, just some sauce. I want Ronnier, too.

  11. blake March 11th, 2013 at 5:45 pm

    Romine never had a chance.

The only reason for Hearhcott to still be around to me is that they are really considering him for the club…..it’s probably an outside shot but otherwise he’d be down getting reps at this point.

Here Is hoping for a healthy season at Trenton for Jose Ramierez ….he was what jumped out to me most this spring for the youngsters…..that and Austin’s approach at the plate

  12. J. Alfred Prufrock March 11th, 2013 at 5:47 pm

    austinmac,

Thought the same thing. He’ll be of “standby” status.
    ///

With the signing of Ben Francisco, can we expect benevolent, Franciscan-like cuts in ticket prices?

I will go out to see Rivera, but I was planning on seeing some live games, any way. I may see a few more than I might have…but the ticket prices should better reflect the product.

  13. J. Alfred Prufrock March 11th, 2013 at 5:48 pm

    blake,

    Who is Ramierez? :)

  14. Doreen March 11th, 2013 at 5:55 pm

Until the season starts, we really don’t know what the product definitely is, do we?

They have good pitching, and if the offense is just enough, they could actually win some games. maybe it’s not with the exact players most people would like to see, but it’s the Ws that really count in the end.

So, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

(Ticket prices to all entertainment venues are too high; salaries in all entertainment areas are too high. It is what it is.)

  15. blake March 11th, 2013 at 5:55 pm

    ///

We kinda do. I can’t project them pulling off some coup and majorly boosting the lineup from its present mediocrity. Were they to do that, then they might be able to justify their prices. But if the bargain basement is all they got, then it should be all that anyone’s willing to pony up to see their retreads.

Doreen, I’m somewhat pacified by the treasures that await us in Trenton :) . Maybe they should charge more for those games, and less in the Bronx ;)

  19. J. Alfred Prufrock March 11th, 2013 at 6:03 pm

Believe it or not, there are people talking about making Jo-Ram a setup man. People not named Mike Francesa. Didn’t GI Joe mention him as such? The last thing this kid needs is to not get to build up his arm, but I could see the knee-jerk Yankees doing something like moving Phelps and making Jo-Ram the sort of long guy.

You mean the pups on the farm? We do have some very good looking players. :) I am jumping about Jo-Ram’s first home start in Trenton. Wonder if they’ll draw for that, now that there’s a buzz around the kid.
Going to any games? You live nearby, don’t you?

  23. Doreen March 11th, 2013 at 6:07 pm

    J Al -

Coney talks about the benefits of working in the pen first. It’s probably more a mixed bag, depending on the pitcher. Gotta be a case-by-case thing. Phelps is special in that he was able to transition well. I think Girardi mis-spoke, though. I think they may have originally thought about doing that, but he did switch up what he said – perhaps his really solid spring has changed their thinking.

I know you have no trust left with any of them, but I still hold out some hope.

  24. Doreen March 11th, 2013 at 6:08 pm

    J Al -

I am hoping to get to as many games as possible this year, if life doesn’t interfere. Last year, almost every game I planned on going to I had to cancel out. So I don’t buy advance tickets. the games I go to myself are my favorites because I can really get into the games. When we go as a family, it’s a family outing, so the attention to detail isn’t quite the same. ;)

  25. J. Alfred Prufrock March 11th, 2013 at 6:10 pm

Doreen, I agree that Phelps was a good candidate, but he doesn’t have this guy’s upside and he had a ton of MilB innings. Jose needs to build his arm up and he needs to go 6,7 innings and continue to use the slider. A bullpen stint for him all but takes that third pitch away from him, delaying his development as a starter.

I don’t want to see them do this to yet another promising young right hander.

  26. J. Alfred Prufrock March 11th, 2013 at 6:12 pm

Doreen, I completely understand about the social aspects interfering with one’s focus. We go and sit in 11 or 12, and rarely get up until we get up to leave. We don’t talk that much, either. :D

  27. J. Alfred Prufrock March 11th, 2013 at 6:14 pm

Doreen, if they want to bring him up late in the season and give him a taste, that’d be fine. I just don’t want to see them fool around with him because they’re tantalized or because he’s on the 40. That’s always my concern with them.

  28. austinmac March 11th, 2013 at 6:18 pm

I have watched most of the games this spring and Ramirez is the one who has stood out for me. Austin looks like a hitter and Heathcott a great athlete who might be very good. The higher level guys showed glimpses, but frankly they also showed the flaws. Melky, Mustelier and Almonte chase pitches to my eyes. Flores doesn’t look like he has power for a corner guy.

They have a number of bullpen guys who throw hard. I like that. Nuno gets guys out by command. Command works at any level if good enough. He would be a consideration if Logan can’t go. Marshall also looked good.

The pitching side looks strong with the offense feeling quite shaky.

  29. Doreen March 11th, 2013 at 6:18 pm

    J Al -

That’s why I think these things have to be on a case by case basis. Not one size fits all, because all these pitchers have different strengths, weaknesses, histories. September call up is definitely a different story. Getting a taste of the Stadium, etc.

Jose seems too young to be banished to the pen just yet. Hopefully he made as big an impression on the “powers that be” as he did on everyone else.

  30. mick March 11th, 2013 at 6:19 pm

Thought I saw Ronnie sent to Minor League Camp.
    Just getting ahead of myself.

  31. austinmac March 11th, 2013 at 6:20 pm

    JAP,

I couldn’t agree more on Ramirez. I did see a few pretty decent sliders in his last outing. All three pitches don’t need to be plus pitches. He is one of the best looking starter prospects in awhile for the Yankees.

You’d like to think so. Common sense would suggest so. But I remember that 23 year old with the big arm…what’s his name? ;)

  33. G. Love March 11th, 2013 at 6:26 pm

I know I feel completely different about our prospects for the season now that Ben Francisco has walked through the door.

Although in truth, anything that spares us from Juan Rivera is okay by me. I know Rivera came up through our system, but I never loved him as a player.

And Francesa is putting the heat on the Yankees. I was in the car heading to the gym earlier and he was lighting them up for not spending while maintaining high prices.

That said, seeing Jose Ramirez is not in camp anymore is bummer. I would’ve loved to see a 5 inning start vs. some regular major leaguers.

The comment Girardi made about Ramirez on TV was in the game on Saturday. Coney was going on about how they had the future (Ramirez) and past (Mo) both pitching well in the same game and Girardi flubbed and said you may see Ramirez as the closer but quickly corrected himself and said “he projects as a starter”.

Let’s hope that’s all that was. An honest mistake.

  34. J. Alfred Prufrock March 11th, 2013 at 6:28 pm

austinmac, I am not kidding though about people penciling him into the bullpen as a setup guy. There’s talk also that he’ll be Mo’s replacement. I don’t even comment on these sites I visit, because I don’t want to get into that ‘are you out of your mind?’ thing. It’s too much energy expended, but I just can’t believe some of the talk. Somebody actually said he’s not “mentally tough enough” to get through a lineup 3x.

Kid is what, 22? You can’t make this stuff up. And even though it was just one start, I saw him toy with a lineup in 2010, using that change and his fastball. He had like 11 Ks and he was the most polished 20 year old, or 19 year old, I’d ever seen. I never forgot that start. But there was talk that the Yankees were going to put him in the bullpen, because he couldn’t spin a curveball. Then the slider happened.

  35. Jerkface March 11th, 2013 at 6:31 pm

Ramirez is getting talked about for bullpen because the prospect lists talk up his floor as being a very good reliever thanks to his stuff and plus change. Its also a likely destination if he can’t develop that third pitch.

Though of course some people are going to take a ‘floor projection’ and turn it into the most likely case.

  36. blake March 11th, 2013 at 6:32 pm

There is no way they can put Ramirez in the pen….if they do they seriously have lost their way developmentally

  37. Jerkface March 11th, 2013 at 6:33 pm

Essentially, due to the way fans and media are with things, baseball teams need to completely ignore anything except the best case scenario and work from there. Ramirez to the pen should only be uttered after ~3 seasons of failed starting in the majors.

  38. Doreen March 11th, 2013 at 6:34 pm

    G. Love -

I’m giving Girardi the benefit of the doubt on that because of the time of year it is, and because I think they saw more from Ramirez than they expected and perhaps the “report” on him changed, literally, overnight.

  39. J. Alfred Prufrock March 11th, 2013 at 6:35 pm

Francesa will pick up the cry and we’ll never hear the end of it: “IF JOBA LEAVES, THEY GOT RIVERA’S REPLACEMENT IN THE MINAHZ!”

  40. G. Love March 11th, 2013 at 6:36 pm

    Doreen,

Agreed. I just get nervous. I do think they ruined what Joba and Hughes might’ve been by playing the bullpen games that they did. I’d rather see them take a more traditional approach to breaking in a young starter like they did with Nova.

Hi. I was 23 years old when I was told just what I could do with my fastball/slider/CB/change arsenal. Fast forward to the present: I am now 27, and the Scourge of the Sixth Inning.

    Do you know me? :)

  42. J. Alfred Prufrock March 11th, 2013 at 6:41 pm

    Austinmac,

I haven’t seen a great deal of him, but I was very impressed with Flores’ hidden power last year during the Eastern League playoffs. Twice I saw him effortlessly drive the ball the the CF wall, one was a 2-run HR, IIRC. He does have power, and Trenton is a pitcher’s park. I think Flores, if he pulls the ball more, will be a 20 HR guy for the Yankees fairly easily. I don’t really want to see him become pull happy, though. He has some power, and I think it’s going to increase. He is a cool customer at the plate with a lovely swing. He’s one I want them to keep; just the kind of hitter we lack.

  43. blake March 11th, 2013 at 6:53 pm

They have to learn from it….as JF says….the pen should only be an option if he absolutely shows its not working as a starter.

I’ll be honest….I like his stuff and delivery better than pre-injury Pineda…..he’s got more movement and he has mastered the more difficult secondary pitch.

Jason Parks tweeted today he’s considering ranking him #3 amongst Yankee prospects….that’s how impressed he was this spring
