REMEMBER ME? Justin Christian gets the start in right field for the Cardinals. The speedy outfielder came up through the Yankees system and got to New York to play in 28 games in 2008. Originally undrafted, Christian has gotten big league time the past two years with the Giants. I remember him most from Scranton, when he and Brett Gardner were in the same outfield, flying all over the place.
SENT DOWN: It technically happened a few days ago and doesn’t really matter because of his injury, but Adonis Garcia has been officially assigned to minor league camp.
WHAT TO WATCH: Would Matt Adams be a good trade target for the Yankees? He’s blocked in St. Louis but has a big bat. Could fill the void at first, but what to do with him after Teixeira comes back? … Ronnier Mustelier is suddenly a hot topic of discussion here in Yankees camp. He’s getting a look at third base, but has to prove he can play there defensively. … Kevin Youkilis is getting his first spring start at third. … A lot of legitimate big league options on the mound today, including Dave Robertson’s return from that odd shoulder stiffness.
UPDATE, 1:09 p.m.: It’s amazing how many Cardinals fans are here. HUGE ovation for David Freese. I’ve never seen a crowd quite like this at Steinbrenner. The entire third-base side of the stadium and much of the right-field bleachers seem full of red shirts.
UPDATE, 1:32 p.m.: Impressive inning by Kuroda. Puts a runner on base with a double — the guy then stole third — but Kuroda struck out the next two to strand the runner. His past four outs have been strikeouts.
UPDATE, 2:19 p.m.: Youkilis has his first Yankees homer, which puts the Yankees up 1-0 in the fourth.
UPDATE, 3:29 p.m.: Cashman just confirmed that the Yankees have signed Ben Francisco to a minor league deal. He’ll compete for a spot as a right-handed reserve outfielder.
