Nova has my sympathies with that
    Group. Dellin must have
Been dying yesterday. Spring Training & he still can’t shake the Trenton infield from hell; Pirela.
    Maruzsak and Joseph :)

  2. J. Alfred Prufrock March 12th, 2013 at 8:38 am

It was even more of a disaster with Lyerly at 3B
And Segediin when they had him in OF.

  3. MTU March 12th, 2013 at 8:42 am

    You’re up early J. Alfred

  4. upstate kate March 12th, 2013 at 8:42 am

Is there 4 regulars in this group?

  5. Bronx Jeers March 12th, 2013 at 8:45 am

Based on the “count 5 days backward from Opening Day” method, we could see CC get in a game tomorrow.

I’ve been wondering about he and Andy.

  6. J. Alfred Prufrock March 12th, 2013 at 8:46 am

Nah MTU it”s just a Trenton infield nightmare I’m having. :)

    Kate – lets hope
    Not!

  7. J. Alfred Prufrock March 12th, 2013 at 8:50 am

    Guess
    They’ve folded the
Joseph 3B thing, Too bad there isn’t a way to get that stick into our
    Lineup.
    Bronx – C said he
Feels great. Can’t wait to see him.
    We should beast on the
Mound this year. If only we cOuld get a young bat or two into play

  8. austinmac March 12th, 2013 at 8:56 am

I have little doubt Rivera and Francisco will be on the team. That way, Brian the brain can point to his economical successes.

  9. Oscar Madison March 12th, 2013 at 8:59 am

To think peeps actually pay money to see a lineup like this play……………..

  10. MTU March 12th, 2013 at 8:59 am

    Mustelier is 28 yrs. old.

    He’s survived Cuba.

He done nothing but hit and field.

What’s a fella to do to get a chance around here ?

    Unfortunately…..probably

  12. austinmac March 12th, 2013 at 9:02 am

Riviera will make the team at first base. He plays it very often. Mustelier must wait until he is in his 30s to get a chance.

You didn’t know ?? You have to be 35 or older ,, at least one major injury , Retired or Inactive , and you have to play for league minimum.

  14. Bronx Jeers March 12th, 2013 at 9:11 am

Getting dumped from a crappy team also helps your chances.

  15. blake March 12th, 2013 at 9:16 am

I could see the case for Francisco making the club….he can at least play 3 spots on defense and could do a bench role where he doesn’t play every day…..

Rivera can’t play anything and I dont really think he will hit either.

We know Jonesy did a nice job for them in 2011…..but he was downright dreadful last year and they stuck with him most of the year anyway.

  16. Doreen March 12th, 2013 at 9:16 am

It is spring training. My mom went the other day to a road game and I told her she wouldn’t be seeing the “A” team and even SHE knew that, and didn’t care. It was spring, it was baseball, it was a beautiful day, and she had a great time.

Now, if this is the lineup opening day at Yankee Stadium, then, there’s something to complain about.

Especially this spring, with the WBC and the Yankees having open tryouts at a few positions.

  17. J. Alfred Prufrock March 12th, 2013 at 9:18 am

Laughing beats crying. Jeter unknowingly thinking the CJ thing was a joke was so money. Not liking this though as the final cast for mariano and also fear them trying to fix it with a hacksaw and gutting future.

In any case go VAto who is looking good. Gods day all.

Go to another team where the GM isn’t looking under every rock for old retreads to undercut your chances to be on the ML Club.

I honestly don’t blame Cashman for trying to get Chipper….he had a .373 OBP last year and can still hit….I’m sure he knew it was a long shot but why not ask? At least he could really help them …..

  21. austinmac March 12th, 2013 at 9:25 am

Blake,Francisco has no offensive potential. Another bad option is no option at all. Another corner outfielder with a sub .700 OPS last year.

  22. Doreen March 12th, 2013 at 9:25 am

    blake -

I agree with you on the Chipper long shot. You don’t know unless you ask. And I’m sure Cashman knew what the answer would be. In the end, I guess it added a little levity to the day, depending on your point of view. It might have been funnier if we didn’t already know Derrek Lee is taking it under consideration, but I choose to take the high road. ;)

    Derek’s comments were great.

  23. MTU March 12th, 2013 at 9:26 am

Sure Blake but when will ever start giving our own a shot.

Especially when they have appeared to earn it.

He’s a 4th outfielder….at least he can play defense…..Rivera and Diaz are likely gonna OpS the same and be awful in the field …..so if they must take a veteran Id rather it be him

  25. blake March 12th, 2013 at 9:29 am

    MTU,
They could take Chipper and Musty….Chipper couldn’t play 1b every day and woukd need to DH a lot….actually he’d probably play 1B while Tex is out…..I hear ya about giving our own guys a shot….especially if the other options are Juan Riveras…..but Chipper can still rake when he can play

  26. blake March 12th, 2013 at 9:30 am

    Doreen.
I get asking Chipper a lot more than Derek Lee….Lee was cooked two years ago and sat out last season because nobody paid him enough to play…..he can play defense but his bat looked done in 2011

  27. Tackelberry March 12th, 2013 at 9:33 am

Some posititve news, How bout 2 scoreless, walkless innings from Dellin yesterday? He did hit a batter, but no walks.

  28. MTU March 12th, 2013 at 9:35 am

    Blake-

Elevating a young guy to the Majors after having paid his dues is a motivating to our youngsters.

Taking Phelps as the example to the young arms. They drew inspiration from it. And hope.

In like manner, it would accomplish the same for position players to see Ronnier get his shot.

Not only that but the kid can play.

The Yankees need to be a little less risk-averse.

This is the season to experiment a little, no ?

Time for the most important meal of the day.

    :)

  29. upstate kate March 12th, 2013 at 9:35 am

I am not being snarky, I know what ST travel teams are like, but I thought there was a rule about 4 regulars being required to play. That lineup is a stretch.

I would rather see one of the young guys play than either Chipper or Lee. I can’t imagine either one is in baseball shape, and they need to be ready now.

  30. blake March 12th, 2013 at 9:38 am

“Elevating a young guy to the Majors after having paid his dues is a motivating to our youngsters.”

I agree in general…..just think Chipper was a unique case that fit well so I’m fine asking him

Positive outing….he threw strikes….but if you watched him pitch his delivery is still wildly inconsistent which makes his stuff inconsistent and hurts his command. He had good control yesterday…..command not so much….and there was great variation in his velocity because he doesn’t have a consistent release point…..not trying to poo poo his outing…..it was positive…..I just don’t see a ton of progress from the last year to be honest

  32. Tar March 12th, 2013 at 9:47 am

“I’m sure he knew it was a long shot but why not ask?”

It’s not so much that he asked, it’s how he asked. It stinks of desperation. What kind of message does it send to Musty and others fighting for the job. Would it have been so hard to just call the Agent in private?

Or is it just me and my ” extreme dislike” for Cashman ?

  33. blake March 12th, 2013 at 9:50 am

“It’s not so much that he asked, it’s how he asked. It stinks of desperation”

    I guess….they are kinda desperate….

  34. CountryClub March 12th, 2013 at 9:50 am

I agree with a lot of the comments today.

But you have to remember that if they send Mesa, Almonte, etc… down, they’re just a phone call away. If they release Francisco, Rivera, etc… those guys are most likely gone. That’s why teams will almost always take the veteran coming out of camp if the competition is close enough.

Then they can always cut the veteran if he isnt producing and then make the call to bring the kid up.

  35. Doreen March 12th, 2013 at 9:51 am

    upstate kate -

My earlier comment about it being a ST game was directed at Oscar Madison, not you. :)

    ***

Seems to me that sometimes the Yankees get fixated on certain players. I seem to remember they were interested in Derrek Lee in the past, and he was either not available or not interested. I think that has happened with other players, as well. Even Ben Francisco, Cashman said they wanted to extend him an invite, but he chose Cleveland. So he leaves Cleveland and Cashman goes back to him.

I agree with MTU that elevating a guy like Mustelier (and even Mesa or Almonte) especially in this situation where the team has a need (even if it’s a temporary need) does elevate the esprit de corps of those laboring in the minor leagues. For years, many of these guys were blocked by Cano, Jeter, ARod, and Tex, who really weren’t going anywhere, so their only chance at the majors was to be sent away in a trade. I’m not saying that the Yankees reserves are stellar; but sometimes when a guy gets a chance to get to the majors, a switch goes off, and his play elevates. Not even consciously. Because I think these guys always (or most of the time) play their hearts out, hoping for a break to go their way.

Well, if this isn’t a break that should go their way on this team, what is?

  36. CountryClub March 12th, 2013 at 9:52 am

“What kind of message does it send to Musty”

    ————–

Who cares? Chipper Jones is better than he is. It was worth the phone call.

  37. Doreen March 12th, 2013 at 9:52 am

Country Club, that is good point, and they don’t blow an option, either, right?

  38. blake March 12th, 2013 at 9:54 am

Id like to see the kids get shots but if they are gonna win this year they can’t wait around til Granderson and Tex get back to win games…..the old saying is that you can’t win a division in April but you can certainly go a long way towards losing one…..the Yanks can’t dig a hole like Boston did a couple of years ago and make it out….the division is too deep and frankly I don’t think they are good enough…..

They need to win this year as it may be their last shot with this group….and to do that they need to turn over every stone to try and survive the first couple months of the season.

  39. DONNYBROOK March 12th, 2013 at 9:55 am

The Larry Jones stuff was Not about trying to get Chipper, it was about Cashman craving and getting attention. This “needing attention” thing, also explains how Cashman got in that fix last year at this time with the female extortionist. He’s become powerless as a GM, and henceforth a pathetic and sad individual.

  40. Doreen March 12th, 2013 at 9:57 am

Tar, I think it comes down to your point of view going in, how you view the Chipper incident.

They want to leave no stone unturned.

And Tex getting hurt HAS left them in somewhat of a desperate situation. The only off-season move or non-move (depending on how you look at it) that could have alleviated Tex getting hurt is if they still had Swisher. I could be wrong, but I don’t think there was anyone out there that could have stepped in for Tex. Especially on a full-time basis.

  41. Doreen March 12th, 2013 at 9:58 am

Tar, and by “your” I don’t mean yours specifically, but your, the group “your.” :)

  42. CountryClub March 12th, 2013 at 9:59 am

and they don’t blow an option, either, right?

    ———–

Well, they blow an option as soon as they send them down. But that’s it for the yr. If they call them up in May and send them back down in June, they still only used one option yr.

  43. blake March 12th, 2013 at 10:01 am

Sounded to me it was just sorta an off the cuff thing he said to reporters and they ran with it…..I doubt very seriously that he actually thought there was any chance Chipper would come back.

Chipper did get a bunch of new twitter followers out of it though he said

Lol, I don’t agree with the rest of it but I do think Cash may have just been effing with people. I think he’s sort of.. how do I put this without it coming across badly?.. twisting the knife a little?

I think he realizes the position we’re in and he’s sort of liked poking the fans… the thing about the HRs, the thing about Nunez, etc…. I think he knew we’d be pissed. I’m not sure what his tactic is.. maybe he’s trying to goad the front office?

  46. Tar March 12th, 2013 at 10:03 am

  47. blake March 12th, 2013 at 10:04 am

If Chipper hadnt done that victory lap thing with all the stadiums last year I betcha he may have considered it….he’s only 32 homers from 500 and he could play as a DH for another year or two …..but after that whole deal last year where he was honored at every stadium it’s tough to change your mind…..you’d look phony and he cares about that and his legacy in Atlanta….gotta respect that

Those seats are empty because of the prices. But the Yanks must make more money with them priced as is (and half full) than they did with what they were priced previously (and almost full). If they werent making more money they would have gone back to the old pricing long ago.
