WEATHER: Rained most of the morning, but that’s finally stopped and it looks like the game will start on time.
UMPIRES: HP Toby Basner, 1B Tim Timmons, 2B Travis Carlson, 3B Chad Whitson
SEE FOR YOURSELF: The Yankees get a first-hand look at top Rays prospect Wil Myers, the big bat acquired in this offseason’s James Shields trade. He’ll be in right field. Right now the plan is for Myers to open the season in the minors.
WHERE HE BELONGS: After giving the DH job to Derek Jeter in two of the past three games, Travis Hafner gets another start today. And no, the Yankees don’t have any plans of playing him in the field at all this spring.
WHAT TO WATCH: The fifth starter job seems to be Ivan Nova’s to lose. He’s pitched well so far this spring. This is his third start. … Ronnier Mustelier is coming off the bench to play third base again. He hasn’t gotten much defensive action his past two times in the infield. The Yankees need to see whether he can legitimately play the position. … The Rays have a handful of guys who can steal a base. Might be another chance for Francisco Cervelli to test his arm.
UPDATE, 1:28 p.m.: Sweeny Murti drove me down here, now Dan Barbarisi is letting me steal the internet connection from his phone because the connection is a mess in this press box. Anyway, it’s a scoreless game heading into the bottom of the second. Melky Mesa has already has one strikeout and one impressive catch — pretty standard day for him, really — and Francisco Cervelli has thrown out another base runner.
UPDATE, 1:55 p.m.: Pretty solid play by Rivera at first base. Is he the front runner over there? More likely that Rivera starts at first or that Ronnier Mustelier starts at third?
UPDATE, 2:11 p.m.: Seriously, Cervelli just threw out another guy. It’s honestly pretty amazing.
