    White smoke! :)

  2. FiretheUMPIRE March 13th, 2013 at 2:10 pm

Where there’s white smoke there’s fire. Could be a big trade coming.

  3. DONNYBROOK March 13th, 2013 at 2:11 pm

Another Bizzaro Yankee batting order. Till I see what kinda wheels Jeet is gonna have this season, I do Not bat him leadoff.

  4. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 13th, 2013 at 2:12 pm

“Where there’s white smoke there’s fire. Could be a big trade coming.”

Yes, and the trade definitely involves the Cardinals.

    :D

  5. FiretheUMPIRE March 13th, 2013 at 2:12 pm

    touche!

  6. FiretheUMPIRE March 13th, 2013 at 2:13 pm

David Freese is the new pope!

  7. Shame Spencer March 13th, 2013 at 2:13 pm

    Jerkface March 13th, 2013 at 2:06 pm

Wow the mets blog gets no comments. A good day is 2.

    ————————–

And apparently one of the lone posters there is a LoHud outcast.

And ID – Yeah, it’s weird how many articles over there are totally Yankee centric. On game day this place can generate 1000+ comments!

  8. blake March 13th, 2013 at 2:14 pm

White smoke means Boesch was signed?

  9. Rich in NJ March 13th, 2013 at 2:15 pm

I think Hal would make a good pope.

  10. Shame Spencer March 13th, 2013 at 2:20 pm

How do you get banned from one of the LoHud blogs but not the other…?

  11. Bronx Jeers March 13th, 2013 at 2:21 pm

And apparently one of the lone posters there is a LoHud outcast

However false the sentiment expressed, I’ll admit it made me laugh. Sorry JF.

  12. Shame Spencer March 13th, 2013 at 2:22 pm

    I hope this is real:

“David Freese is the new pope!”

LMAO! Hey as clutch as he is, he might be just what is needed!

  14. Rich in NJ March 13th, 2013 at 2:24 pm

“However false the sentiment expressed, I’ll admit it made me laugh. ”

    It reminded me of graffiti.

  15. FiretheUMPIRE March 13th, 2013 at 2:25 pm

White smoke coming out of the Vatican…and it’s not even 4:20 on the East Coast.

  16. Shame Spencer March 13th, 2013 at 2:25 pm

Lol, it made me laugh too. I sorta wanna go back and see if Bret has been.. um.. expressing himself over there since his banning. Maybe he’s been waxing poetics this entire time.

  17. MTU March 13th, 2013 at 2:26 pm

I used to be the Pope of Greenwich Village a long time ago.

But I preferred Purple Haze to White Smoke.

    :)

  18. MTU March 13th, 2013 at 2:29 pm

If Hal sticks to 189 there will be white smoke coming out of a lot of peoples’ ears.

    :(

  19. Doreen March 13th, 2013 at 2:31 pm

    Trisha -

That was very fast! I wonder who?

  20. blake March 13th, 2013 at 2:34 pm

If the Cardinals are smart they will pick Oscar Taveras

  21. blake March 13th, 2013 at 2:35 pm

Wait , Bret is posting on a Mets blog?

  22. RhapsodyInBlue March 13th, 2013 at 2:36 pm

I pick Cardinal Scola as the dark horse.

  23. Rich in NJ March 13th, 2013 at 2:37 pm

“Wait , Bret is posting on a Mets blog?”

    Emoting, anyway,

  24. FiretheUMPIRE March 13th, 2013 at 2:37 pm

Could also be Jake Plummer or Rick Pitino.

  25. Rich in NJ March 13th, 2013 at 2:38 pm

Unlike virtually every news story these days, no leaks…

  26. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 13th, 2013 at 2:38 pm

Doreen, they said we should know momentarily. They’ll interrupt the trial I’m following as soon as it’s announced. (They interrupted it to announce the white smoke.) I’ve heard several possibilities bandied about, but I don’t know if there was any clear frontrunner. A cardinal from Milan has been mentioned quite a few times. I also heard that one of the American cardinals (Wuerl) was highly regarded. But of course, no way to really know until it’s announced.

And yes, that was very fast!

  27. FiretheUMPIRE March 13th, 2013 at 2:39 pm

The Cardinals front office is quite efficient.

  28. Shame Spencer March 13th, 2013 at 2:40 pm

Well done MTU. I’m always impressed by how many stoners frequent the blog

Yeah, blake, he’s over there emoting about what what goes on in here apparently lol.

  29. Bronx Jeers March 13th, 2013 at 2:42 pm

Francesca is known as the ” sports pope” here in NY.

If that was really the Hitman then it’s clear he’s still very much active in here.

  30. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 13th, 2013 at 2:44 pm

That was way back during the Dinosaur Age.

GB was there too thought I doubt he wore bell-bottoms.

    ;)

  32. MTU March 13th, 2013 at 2:47 pm

    ed: “though” not “thought”. sorry

  33. tomingeorgia March 13th, 2013 at 2:48 pm

    Mister MTU,
I was there, too, watching Peter, Paul and Mary at the Gaslight.

  34. Bronx Jeers March 13th, 2013 at 2:49 pm

Whe I don’t really have a horse in the race I kind of hope the the Pope isn’t from Europe.

  35. mick March 13th, 2013 at 2:49 pm

I fear this blog will cease to exist as we know it.
For the record, this is the best Yankee/baseball blog out there and lends itself toward discourse on all levels.
It would be a shame to see it end as we know it.
While it may have proven to be too burdensome to maintain, with its fiery discourse at times,
it is organic, to say the least, and would be sorely missed if changed to suppress this format.

  36. pkyankfan69 March 13th, 2013 at 2:49 pm

I’m the new pope… Sorry to ruin the excitement.

I’ll do my best to keep my hands off young boys.

    No promises though.

  37. blake March 13th, 2013 at 2:50 pm

“Yeah, blake, he’s over there emoting about what what goes on in here apparently lol.”

  40. ac1 March 13th, 2013 at 2:50 pm

HAHAHAHA Wes Welker working on a deal with the Broncos?

    From Brady to Manning.

He must have been pretty offended by the Pats’ offer.

  41. tomingeorgia March 13th, 2013 at 2:51 pm

And I had bell bottoms. Platform shoes, too.

  42. Rich in NJ March 13th, 2013 at 2:52 pm

‘I’ll have to check that out….though I suspect he’s still among us”

I have a proposal: The Yankees get Montero back, and LoHud gets Bret back.

  43. MTU March 13th, 2013 at 2:52 pm

    Mister Tom-

Dylan at Cafe Wha for me.

Just a kid w. a Guitar and an unusual style.

But yeah. Wow. Those were some times.

    :)

  44. slayr36 March 13th, 2013 at 2:53 pm

Will they consider signing brennan boesch? Decent outfielder with a big upside if kevin long could work with him could be a big pick up. Tigers just released him today.

  45. MTU March 13th, 2013 at 2:54 pm

I think I’ve asked about this in the past but theoretically if you get banned from an IP linked to your computer, you could still post using your iPhone/smart phone, right?

  47. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 13th, 2013 at 2:58 pm

Yikes. I remember when Boesch was the belle of the ball!. I wonder if there’s any connection to the release and the Miami report.

  49. Shame Spencer March 13th, 2013 at 3:00 pm

Rich – Bret can’t come back because he was on here spouting some really crazy sh*t, even for him. But if he is here in another incarnation I’d love for him to let us know. At least Stone is always upfront with his sequels.

Speaking of the body snatchers… where’s Nick been?

  50. Doreen March 13th, 2013 at 3:00 pm

    Shame

I never tried any of it. At all. There were a few if us. ;)

  52. Bronx Jeers March 13th, 2013 at 3:01 pm

Francesca’s arguing with callers about Jeter and Mariano’s place in the all time Yankee list.

His contention is that they (nor anybody else) can crack the top 4. I’ll buy that.

  53. Rich in NJ March 13th, 2013 at 3:01 pm

    Shame

I missed that, although I heard something. I don’t expect Montero back either. :( ;)

What a beautiful moment. St. Peter’s Square looks like Times Square on New Year’s Eve. It is packed.

  58. mick March 13th, 2013 at 3:07 pm

Pope Dolan would be a hoot!

“His contention is that they (nor anybody else) can crack the top 4. I’ll buy that.”

not the top 4 no…..the top 4 is fairly easy to me…..Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio, Mantle. I could argue Jeter anywhere from #5 to probably 7 and Mo in the 7-10 Range.

  62. mick March 13th, 2013 at 3:10 pm

Yeah that’s actually the far more interesting question.
    =======================
more interesting is who would be #10?

  63. Doreen March 13th, 2013 at 3:10 pm

Not an Angel by far, but I preferred to make my mistakes sober! Lol. Also, sometimes it is beneficial to be “risk averse”. ;) . ( e.g. A chicken)

  64. blake March 13th, 2013 at 3:10 pm

yea I think either Yogi or Jeter should be #5….I’d go Jeter but just because I’ve seen him play.

Agreed. And yeah I think Jeter is the only one I could consider for #5.

    Babe
    Gehrig
    Joe D.
    Mick
    Jeter

The Yankees have had some really incredible pitchers but I’m just realizing I don’t think more than 2 would even have potential to crack my top 10.

  78. trisha - true pinstriped blue March 13th, 2013 at 3:14 pm

First nonEuropean Pope in the history of the Catholic church.

    Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

They’re saying he’s choosing the name Francis, after St. Francis of Assisi. Seriously. My favorite Saint.

She was not amused when I told her there should be.

This occurred at St. Nicholas of Tolentine on Fordham Road and University Avenue in 1968, St. Mickey’s last season.

Pretty awesome moment all around, tom. They’re saying he chose to move away from the residence of the archbishop in Argentina and instead lived in a small apartment and didn’t even have a driver. He wanted to live a life of simplicity. It’s little wonder that he chose Francis.

Robinson Cano upset with Nick Punto after WBC spiking incident

“I was upset because it was the third time in a game,” Cano said. “I don’t care if you slide in a double play, but when it’s a forceout at second base, the last thing you want is to get hurt like that. They’re passing the base. If I’m in the middle, I don’t care.

“He (Punto) says, like, ‘You know, I don’t want to hurt you.’ But that’s the third time. I don’t want anybody to get me hurt or anything like that because they just want to slide hard… I was mad.”

That season was exciting with him and Wang . I think that’s where his whole build from within theory came from. Those two players showed him kids from the farm can produce and hold their own.

I think he hasn’t done that since because some players have’t progressed as he thought they would. He’s afraid to get burned. Cano and Wang stepped i as rookies and never looked back outside of Wang getting hurt and Robbie’s 08 season.

  172. blake March 13th, 2013 at 5:25 pm

@Joelsherman1: Johan shut down, Carlos Gomez gets 4-yr $27M #Brewers extension. Didn’t expect Gomez to be 1 who thrived long term from trade #Mets

  173. blake March 13th, 2013 at 5:26 pm

That is a really good deal for the Brewers

  174. Jerkface March 13th, 2013 at 5:26 pm

I guess its a good deal if you like guys who dont get on base.

  175. blake March 13th, 2013 at 5:29 pm

Yea he’s not a great player but he’s not being paid like one either …good outfielder….prime age…

  176. Rich in NJ March 13th, 2013 at 5:30 pm

Last season was the first season that Gomez had > 400 PA since ’08. That deal seems risky.

  177. Jerkface March 13th, 2013 at 5:33 pm

Gomez doesnt walk and strikes out a lot, he is fast and a good defender and hit 19 Hrs last year, so he is like a very specific type of player that some teams like (a gross hacker with some power), but bleh pass on that. Even at that price.

  178. Jerkface March 13th, 2013 at 5:35 pm

I guess this puts the deal more into perspective, but I didn’t like the BJ Upton deal either:

The various defensive metrics rate Gomez anywhere from above-average to elite in center field, which is where a big chunk of his value lies. A similar player in B.J. Upton — 28 years old, hit .246/.298/.454 (109 OPS+) with 28 homers and 31 steals in 2012 — signed a five-year deal worth $75 million this past offseason. Although Gomez doesn’t have the same kind of track record, it’s surprising he signed for only one-third of Upton’s guaranteed money so close to free agency.

    http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/b.....rlos-gomez

  179. Jerkface March 13th, 2013 at 5:35 pm

So if you like BJ Upton and think Carlos Gomez is BJ lite then I guess its a steal.

  180. austinmac March 13th, 2013 at 5:35 pm

Ben Francisco has had a negative WAR each of the past four years. Another great pickup. Wins are overrated.

My fantast team this year the rules are you keep 5 players, throw the rest back, then draft to fill the roster.

    My 5 keepers.

    Pujols
    fielder
    bautista
    heyward

    kershaw

Plus i draft number 1 in a snake draft.

    Decisions,decisions.

“Re; Gomez, any contract whose reasoning begins “Assuming his career year is sustainable” is a bad one”

Sure….if you pay them a ton of money…..they didnt really…..it’s a contract that probably will be ok…..could be really good….and if he doesn’t play well then it doesn’t hurt too bad.

  185. blake March 13th, 2013 at 6:46 pm

So the Pats cheaped out on Welker and he went to the Broncos?
