Spring training Game 21: Yankees vs. Marlins

YANKEES (6-11)
Brett Gardner CF
Derek Jeter SS
Ichiro Suzuki LF
Travis Hafner DH
Juan Rivera RF
Francisco Cervelli C
Ronnier Mustelier 3B
Dan Johnson 1B
Corban Joseph 2B

LHP CC Sabathia (first spring start)

MARLINS (7-9)
Juan Pierre LF
Donovan Solano 2B
Kevin Kouzmanoff 1B
Austin Kearns RF
Rob Brantly C
Matt Downs DH
Adeiny Hechavarria SS
Nick Green 3B
Gorky’s Hernandez CF

RHP John Maine (1-0, 1.80)

TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m., YES Network

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid to high 60s. Not much wind, either.

UMPIRES: HP Mark Carlson, 1B Tom Hallion, 2B Eric Cooper, 3B Vic Carapazza

THEY SAY IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY: Kevin Youkilis turns 34 today. Curtis Granderson turns 32 on Saturday. Is it just me or does it seem like there should be much more than two years separating those two?

GRAND KIDS: Curtis Granderson is hosting a fund raiser for his Grand Kids Foundation tonight in Tampa. He’ll be at a place called The Patio, serving as guest bartender. General admission passes are $25 and include an open bar. VIP passes are $75 and include food, drink, a t-shirt and an autograph. Proceeds go toward buying school supplies for kids in need.

WHAT TO WATCH: Ronnier Mustelier gets another turn at third base and Juan Rivera gets a start in right field. It’s not totally out of the question that those two players could be in those two spots on Opening Day. … Derek Jeter has been in the field once this spring, but it’s obviously worth watching to see whether he’ll get more defensive opportunities this time. … Francisco Cervelli seems to have a leg up in the catching competition. … CC Sabathia will be making his first spring start. Not sure the results will mean much, but it certainly matters that he’ll be on the mound.

UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.: Mustelier charged a bunt and fielded it bare-handed, but he didn’t have time get the out at first and Gorky’s Hernandez is on with a bunt single. Looked like Mustelier might have bobbled the ball slightly, but not much. Certainly didn’t look bad on the play. He started a double play earlier in the game.

Meanwhile, Sabathia has allowed five hits and two runs through 1.1 innings. Not sure it means much, but it’s what’s happening.

UPDATE, 1:40 p.m.: Cervelli just went deep. His chances of winning the regular catching job actually went down.

UPDATE, 1:43 p.m.: Mustelier steals a bag.

UPDATE, 1:51 p.m.: Jeter snags a low line drive and turns it into a double play, doubling off Kouzmanoff at first. It’s still a 2-1 Marlins lead.

UPDATE, 1:59 p.m.: Pronk! There’s Hafner’s first spring homer, a two-run shot to push the Yankees in front 3-2 in the bottom of the third.

UPDATE, 2:08 p.m.: Mustelier just smashed into the fench in front of the third-base camera well. Seemed to slam his right knee into the bar. Banged up his ribs pretty good too. He’s coming out of the game. He was on the ground for a while, so it looked pretty ugly.

UPDATE, 2:43 p.m.: Multiple contusions to both of Mustelier’s legs, but that’s all for now. Further evaluation to come.

If LoHud was on the Titanic.. would that make Chad the captain of the ship..?

    Discuss.

  7. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:18 pm

CC doesn’t look real sharp but it’s his first outing….if he’s healthy and throwing all his pitches then he’ll be fine….velo is down though….89-91.

    Musty with the fine play…..

  8. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:19 pm

“If LoHud was on the Titanic.. would that make Chad the captain of the ship..?”

yea I guess….he could be Leonardo too I guess

  9. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:20 pm

Paul Oneil just said what many of us have been saying…..

  10. Rich in NJ March 15th, 2013 at 1:20 pm

“If LoHud was on the Titanic.. would that make Chad the captain of the ship..?”

    Chad would be DiCaprio
    You would be Winslet

Wait. You knew that. So this is a trick question, right?

  11. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:21 pm

I was thinking I’d limit us to real historical characters but I also want to know who among us would be Billy Zane…this is a tough call.

  12. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:21 pm

About CC or about the team?

  13. tomingeorgia March 15th, 2013 at 1:22 pm

The other question is, what Lohudites would have abandoned ship, damn the women and children, even before that doom was certain.

  14. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:22 pm

While I appreciate the sentiment I’ve always seen Chad surviving our romance… perhaps you guys are more in tuned with my love life than I am, however. :|

  15. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:23 pm

    “Chad would be DiCaprio
    You would be Winslet”

watch out Chad…..her heart will go on…but only after she lets you drown

  16. Doreen March 15th, 2013 at 1:23 pm

Oh, what did Paul O’Neill say?

I forgot this was on tv and I was, like, busy. LOL

  17. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:24 pm

“About CC or about the team?”

the team….he said last year the Yanks had guys that hit homers but that was it….made the games boring

  18. Rich in NJ March 15th, 2013 at 1:24 pm

“The other question is, what Lohudites would have abandoned ship, damn the women and children, even before that doom was certain.”

Oooo.. this is a good one.. anyone born after 1985 might let you guys die. We’re kind of a ME-centric generation. Then again, we might all be too busy posting selfies of ourselves on the sinking ship to get to safety…

“The other question is, what Lohudites would have abandoned ship, damn the women and children, even before that doom was certain.”

I would use the ships satellite phone to call for help

  21. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:29 pm

Jeter handled that one fine….seems to be moving ok

  22. tomingeorgia March 15th, 2013 at 1:29 pm

    blake,
And order a cajun biscuit from Popeye’s.

  23. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:29 pm

CC not sharp….but he’s throwing all his pitches….first outing for him

  24. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:29 pm

If LoHud was on the Titanic which one of us would be the lookout that spotted the iceberg..?

  25. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:30 pm

    @awfulannouncing

Oh God. RT @stevelepore: 357,000 people watched the highest rated First Take this week, the show ESPN suspended Bill Simmons for criticizing

Omg, did you guys see that segment with Skip Bayless and Richard Sherman..???

  26. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:31 pm

“And order a cajun biscuit from Popeye’s.”

    I haven’t had one from Popeyes…..

Musty looks good over there….he almost made a very tough bunt play

  27. Jerkface March 15th, 2013 at 1:31 pm

Mustelier with a nice play again, but runner too fast.

  28. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:32 pm

“If LoHud was on the Titanic which one of us would be the lookout that spotted the iceberg..?”

    G Love

  29. tomingeorgia March 15th, 2013 at 1:33 pm

The same ones who’ve been seeing icebergs since 2010, every day.

  30. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:33 pm

If LoHud was on the Titanic how many of you would join the ranks of Team Greedy demanding more, more, MORE lifeboats be on board..?

  31. Hassey March 15th, 2013 at 1:33 pm

Half the folks on LoHud would deny it was an iceberg and the other half would blindly trust that the captain is skilled enough to know to steer around it

  32. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:33 pm

I’m glad Musty is looking serviceable over there. I haven’t seen much of his play in the field. What’s his arm like?

  33. Rich in NJ March 15th, 2013 at 1:34 pm

“The same ones who’ve been seeing icebergs since 2010, every day.”

Oh…you were making an analogy to one’s fan-worthiness…

Has the talent base of the team increased or decreased since 2010?

If it’s the latter, what’s unfan-worthy about pointing that out?

  34. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:35 pm

“I’m glad Musty is looking serviceable over there. I haven’t seen much of his play in the field. What’s his arm like?”

    not bad at all

  35. Hassey March 15th, 2013 at 1:37 pm

Shame – It’s about three feet long, dark complexion, a few hairs and possibly one or more needle marks, and let’s see one, two, three…five, yes five fingers near the end

  36. tomingeorgia March 15th, 2013 at 1:38 pm

The third half would say the lookouts sucked, the Captain sucked, and that Management was responsible for all the injuries, while sitting in South Hampton.

  37. Hassey March 15th, 2013 at 1:38 pm

the fourth half would abandon ship 20 miles from the iceberg

  38. tomingeorgia March 15th, 2013 at 1:39 pm

    Rich,
    Nothing about fan-worhtiness, just preoccupations.

  39. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:40 pm

Oh man, we need to play this game every day!! You guys are good at this.

Remember kids: There are no wrong answers, just increasingly sarcastic ones.

  40. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:41 pm

    Tomorrow: The Hindenburg.

  41. Doreen March 15th, 2013 at 1:41 pm

Thanks for the response to my question about what O’Neill said.

  42. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:42 pm

    Cervy!

  43. tomingeorgia March 15th, 2013 at 1:42 pm

Nice bat and leg-work by Musty.

  44. Doreen March 15th, 2013 at 1:42 pm

    Oh the Lohudity!!!

  45. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:43 pm

I do think Cervi could hit 10ish HRs this season if he’s playing regularly.

  46. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:43 pm

Musty hits a lot of rockets to SS

  47. Rich in NJ March 15th, 2013 at 1:43 pm

    tom

The main fan preoccupation is winning. It’s tougher to win when the talent base is eroding. So it’s reasonable (and to be expected) that fans would point that out, especially when there were obvious ways to mitigate the coming talent decline that were ignored.

After all, the Yankees are a for-profit business, which is fine.

But that also means that the customers have a right to express their product preferences.

  48. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:44 pm

    Musty steals 2nd!

  50. Doreen March 15th, 2013 at 1:45 pm

Wow I had to run in to see the replay! Hurray for Musty!

Chad, very funny comment on Cervelli. :)

  51. Hassey March 15th, 2013 at 1:46 pm

It wasn’t too long ago that, on a typical day, at any given moment the site was only 25 posts away from an argument. These days it’s more like 7. Are we becoming more efficient and beating around the bush less? Or is the surviving crew simply ornerier than its neanderthal predecessors?

  52. Doreen March 15th, 2013 at 1:46 pm

Did he tag up and go to third on the fly ball??

  53. Hassey March 15th, 2013 at 1:47 pm

Musty will be this year’s Cespedes

I have no problem with how the lineup is shaking out (love to get Tex back on D, though)

  54. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:48 pm

I checked over at the LoHud Mets blog (increasing their page hits by double, no doubt) to see how the format was looking.

    Enjoy: http://i1075.photobucket.com/a.....6f4c93.jpg

  55. Doreen March 15th, 2013 at 1:50 pm

    Oh no you didn’t……

Is it me or is Meredith lookin improved this season?

  59. Hassey March 15th, 2013 at 1:51 pm

Shame – Does Meredith have curves?

  60. tomingeorgia March 15th, 2013 at 1:52 pm

Musty has beat out an infield hit (called an error), stolen second on a sac fly, made two very good plays at third, after two innings. For his next act, should he pitch two innings of scoreless relief?

  61. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:52 pm

    Jete looks ok to me

  62. Rich in NJ March 15th, 2013 at 1:52 pm

“Musty will be this year’s Cespedes”

I”l take 75% of Cespedes. Heck, just let him play.

  63. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:53 pm

“Musty has beat out an infield hit (called an error), stolen second on a sac fly, made two very good plays at third, after two innings. For his next act, should he pitch two innings of scoreless relief?”

    ——————-

It looks a lot better than the first time we checked it out. There was initially a lot of stuff going on at the top of the page that was all screwy. The general layout looks more mobile user friendly.. I’m sure we’ll make due. The only thing truly exciting me is the opportunity to post a picture lol. We’ll get to have our own user photo!! I’m going to emote all weekend so I have a full stock of selfies to display however I’m feeling on that particular day. I also have a wide variety of Britney Spears face-pics that will have the same effect.

  65. ac1 March 15th, 2013 at 1:54 pm

    Musty for YANKEES!!!

The lineup this year should always be Gardner/Jeter/Ichiro (v lhp) or Gardner/Ichiro/Jeter (v rhp) and our best power hitter Cano would always hit 4th. That is the best way to manufacture runs. (Also Nunez 9th whenever possible to be on base when the other .300 hitters come up).

  66. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:54 pm

I think Wally is trying to get Musty trending on twitter

  67. Shame Spencer March 15th, 2013 at 1:54 pm

For anyone that did not click this link, you must all click this link: http://i1075.photobucket.com/a.....6f4c93.jpg

It is about LoHud and therefore of epic (not even close) importance!!

(Okay okay okay, so it took me like 2 minutes to take the screen shot and upload it but that was time I could have been doing real work instead of working for the greater good of the blog.. so I feel like you all owe me something by way of clicking.)

  71. Bronx Jeers March 15th, 2013 at 1:58 pm

Musty I’m amazed at the way you’re with me all the time…..

  72. blake March 15th, 2013 at 1:59 pm

  73. Doreen March 15th, 2013 at 2:00 pm

    Shame.

    You are too funny.

It’s probably a good idea to have a device-friendly interface. I know it’s less than ideal right now to be in this site with my i-stuff.

  74. blake March 15th, 2013 at 2:01 pm

Ichiro….impressive….ST game and he’s busting it down the line and beats out a DP where the SS loafed the ball across…..led to an additional run with the homer

  75. tomingeorgia March 15th, 2013 at 2:01 pm

Ichiro beats out a DP ball, Hafner hits it half a mile. That’s amore.

  76. blake March 15th, 2013 at 2:01 pm

  105. Rich in NJ March 15th, 2013 at 2:27 pm

that would be the best thing ever if Sterling made that his Musty homer call.

I disagree. These guys were never meant to play everyday.
Francisco and Rivera are for the bench. Johnson was filler to back up 1b and 3b.
Lee was being asked to play everyday until Tex came back.

Two guys on the Marlins to keep an eye on: Casey Kotchman and the Kooooz – both are having very good springs and could be available at the end of spring training.

    YT,

Yep, I’ll take that Abreu too, but if he would want a multi year contract. We don’t do that.

  127. austinmac March 15th, 2013 at 2:53 pm

There is no doubt what the Yankees think about the guys on the roster when they are vying the retired player list.

O’Neill said in the AL all nine players must hit. What? Isn’t it only about defense?

I do feel a little sorry for Girardi in his contract year. He really doesn’t have many choices and no one has really stepped up offensively.

  128. DONNYBROOK March 15th, 2013 at 2:54 pm

What’s the dope on this Tuiasosopo\Mets guy? I keep seeing his name in the box scores with crooked numbers following thereafter.

  130. ac1 March 15th, 2013 at 2:55 pm

I do feel a little sorry for Girardi in his contract year. He really doesn’t have many choices and no one has really stepped up offensively.
    ___

This year will be his chance to really prove he can manage, It’s about his decisions with the lineup. Unfortunately, he will do what he always does, and bat Ichiro 7th for no reason, play lefty/righty matchups because the book says so, and hope to go by that. Gardner will end up being platooned, Ichiro wont face all lefties too, and that will be that.

  131. DONNYBROOK March 15th, 2013 at 2:55 pm

Girardi has a choice. PUT DOWN THE BINDER.

  132. Chip March 15th, 2013 at 2:57 pm

I still see the biggest problem Girardi’s going to have been a number crunch. Ideally I I think they would bring Francisco, Nix, Mustellier and Rivera north, but none of those guys are on the 40 man roster. You can get two of them on easily but after that things get tricky. There aren’t any obvious guys you can delete from the 40 man roster. Well, I mean I would cut Chris Stewart but that’s not happening.

So do you leave Nix off and have Nunez and Corban Joseph as your utility infielders? Do you leave off Francisco in favor of Melky Mesa?

  133. 4TrainNorth March 15th, 2013 at 2:58 pm

    ____

Nix, Nunez, Rivera and Stewie is going to be the bench. I assume the 40 man will come into play with Francisco vs. Mesa or Almonte. In typical yankee fashion, i see them dropping Zoilo to get a one month rental on, then we lose Zoilo. I base this on what they always do.

But i dont want the kids up here sitting the bench either.

I want Musty playing 3rd everyday until Tex comes back.
I want Mesa or Almonte playing the OF everyday until Grandy returns and if they play well, I want the Yankees to trade Granderson now.
Rivera fills a need so he can be the back up OF/IB.
I want Nunez playing as often as possible: DH/SS vs. lefties and some activity vs. RHP, pinch run etc…

Who’s playing 1B? Johnson or Rivera.

What happens without them? Youk plays 1B and Musty at 3B, probably.

Who is the 3rd OF? Rivera or Francicso. Who is it but for them? Mesa.

Nunez, who knows. They have completely mishandled him.

  145. ac1 March 15th, 2013 at 3:23 pm

from looking at the 40 man, here is what i can see possibly happening to get others on the 40 man.

    Cabral to 60 day
    Pineda to 60 day
    MannyB to 60 day
    Release Eppley

I dont think they can put Grandy or Tex on 60 man, they could both be ready before June1.

Those 4 moves would get Musty, Nix, and Rivera on the 40 man. Releasing Eppley would allow Francisco, but I would rather see Mesa or Almonte get the opp and they are both on the roster.

I dont think Manny is going to go on the 60 day DL. They optioned him to the minors, so presumably he will go on the minor league DL. That way he doesnt eat a year of service time.

  152. ac1 March 15th, 2013 at 3:27 pm

Rich, logic would say Nunez should play SS vs. Lefties and Jeter DH.
Logic says they should play Youk at 1B and Musty at 3B while Tex is out.
Logic is tougher in the OF, as Mesa and Almonte didnt really step up and prove they should be there, which is why we will be stuck with Francisco and Rivera until Granderson comes back.

  153. ac1 March 15th, 2013 at 3:29 pm

I dont think Manny is going to go on the 60 day DL. They optioned him to the minors, so presumably he will go on the minor league DL. That way he doesnt eat a year of service time.

Then they basically have 2 options to move to the 60 man and possibly releasing Eppley.
Means only 1 of Rivera/Francisco can come north, or they risk losing Mesa or Almonte (or make some other dumb move).

I see Montgomery stats, but I don’t see closer type stuff at all.

  159. Jerkface March 15th, 2013 at 3:36 pm

Montgomery hasn’t had a baller spring. And right now his fastball is 89 mph?

  160. blake March 15th, 2013 at 3:42 pm

When I saw Montgomery in the AFL the first time…..the first thing I thought was that his fastball looked pretty flat and that I wondered how it would play against big league competition. He does hide the ball well and has deception and his plus slider helps…..but I think he might need to develop a CU or something to complement those 2 pitches as he moves up the ladder…..still an exciting pen arm but I feel less sure about him than before I saw him pitch and just looked at his stats…..his stats jump on the page at you…..the performance when watching hasn’t for me so far….

  161. hardwired7 March 15th, 2013 at 3:43 pm

What Montgomery looks like now, and what he looks like three months down the road might be completely different things.

I thought about Banuelos to the 60 but Jerkface pointed out that they optioned him to the minors so they can leave him on the minor league DL. If you put him on the 60 you burn a year of his control.

I think they’ll have to do a 2 for 1 deal or deal a player like Eppley for someone who doesn’t have to go on the 40 man roster.

  164. blake March 15th, 2013 at 3:44 pm

“What Montgomery looks like now, and what he looks like three months down the road might be completely different things.”

that’s very true….he looked kinda the same though this fall when I saw him and he should have still been in game shape then….of course it was the end of a long season too

  165. Tackelberry March 15th, 2013 at 3:45 pm

Nice job by MOntgomery pitching around a leadoff double. Don’t think I ever read where he was projected as a “closer” though.

  166. Tackelberry March 15th, 2013 at 3:49 pm

His fastball is usually around 91. Be nice if he can increase it to around 93. WOuld compliment his slider alot better

    ————————

    Not true.

If they decide to just put Pineda and Cabral on the 60 and create two roster spots they could give them to Rivera and Francisco.

you go with a 25 of:

    C – Cervell
    1b – Rivera
    2b – Cano
    3b – Youk
    SS – Jeter
    LF – Gardner
    CF – Mesa
    RF – Ichiro
    DH – Pronk

    Bench:
    Francisco, Joseph, Nunez, Stewart

    Rotation:

    CC, Kuroda, Hughes, Andy, Nova

    Pen
RHP: Joba, Rivera, Robertson, Aardsma, Kelley, Eppley

    LHP: Logan, Rapada

  168. blake March 15th, 2013 at 3:55 pm

  170. blake March 15th, 2013 at 4:01 pm

yea they have all looks pretty decent…..I wonder how they see Nuno’s future…..starter…reliever….seems to have all the pitches to start for now…

  171. Tackelberry March 15th, 2013 at 4:05 pm

They probably envision Nuno as a long releiver-spot starter type. like an Alfredo Aceves.

  172. GoldGlove9486 March 15th, 2013 at 4:05 pm

Wonder if Logan/Rapada can’t go at the start of the season if Nuno gets a chance. I love watching him pitch.
