TIME/TV: 12:05 p.m., YES Network

WEATHER: Temperatures getting back into the 70s. Little bit of wind blowing from right to left.

UMPIRES: HP Vic Carapazza, 1B Mark Carlson, 2B Marty Foster, 3B Manny Gonzalez

THEY SAY IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY: Today is Curtis Granderson’s 32nd birthday.

TEX MESSAGE: Mark Teixeira is expected to rejoin the Yankees this weekend and continue his rehab work here in Florida.

WHAT TO WATCH: This is the Yankees debut of Brennan Boesch, who was signed yesterday to a big league contract, presumably to be the regular right fielder while Granderson is on the DL. … Hiroki Kuroda has looked good this spring. He has eight strikeouts and one walk through 5.2 innings. … First time Derek Jeter has played in back-to-back games this spring.

UPDATE, 12:12 p.m.: Kuroda gets through a 1-2-3 top of the first, then Jeter leads off with a double.

UPDATE, 12:15 p.m.: Jeter breaks for third on a grounder to short. Gets thrown out. Ichiro comes too far off first on a liner to third. Gets doubled off. Oh, spring training.

UPDATE, 12:36 p.m.: Bunt single for Gardner, who sent the ball to second instead of dropping it down the third-base line. Utley tried to flip the ball with his glove, but he had no chance of beating the play.

UPDATE, 12:51 p.m.: Gil Velazquez botched a potential double play ball, and Domonic Brown followed with a three-run homer for a 3-0 Phllies lead.

UPDATE, 12:57 p.m.: Add one more run for the Phillies and it’s 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

UPDATE, 1:12 p.m.: Jeter out of the game. Velazquez at short. Ibarra at second.

UPDATE, 1:37 p.m.: Sound system goes to 11 here at Steinbrenner Field. Cranked up super loud for Mariano Rivera’s entrance. It’s still a 4-0 game in the seventh. Kuroda went six inings.

He likes the idea of looking out to that short right-field porch rather than the expansive outfield of Detroit.

    Why?

First of all, Comerica has a neutral park factor for home runs the past 3 years.

Secondly, Boesch has hit better at home than on the road in his career.

    home: 763 pa, 25 hr, .775 OPS

    away: 724 pa, 17 hr, .682 OPS

Just an FYI, talked to someone in the Yankees organization who said the team has no plans of teaching Boesch to play first base. He’s here to help in the outfield, and only in the outfield. The Yankees will figure out what to do with him once Granderson comes back when the time comes.

Cashman officially called Boesch a big hairy monster

  4. cofuzz March 16th, 2013 at 12:34 pm

But jacksquat, his SSS at Yankee Stadium is .367/.375/.533.
I believe simple math puts his OPS at .908.

a beautiful drag bunt by gardy, be still my heart…

    8 games.

    vsss.

I hope he does well, but I’m getting tired of the way the Yankees do things.

Boesch has horrendous defense numbers. Consistently bad.

Rivera has Giambi-esque numbers at 1B.

An ideal scenario is seeing Rivera cut loose in May once Tex returns and Boesch sent down to work on his swing when Grandy is ready.

The Yanks pitching will be fine, just don’t expect them to be an offensive juggernaut in April. They need to avoid falling too far behind in April. If they stay competitive until Tex and Grandy return, they will be fine.

  8. tomingeorgia March 16th, 2013 at 12:53 pm

    That was Giambi-like.

  9. jacksquat March 16th, 2013 at 1:06 pm

Oh, my bad. That play makes him Mattingly.

  10. Bronx Jeers March 16th, 2013 at 1:18 pm

This team was not built with run prevention in mind. Run scoring also looks like it may not have been taken into consideration.

  11. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 1:46 pm

I know he botched a double play ball, but I’ve been pretty impressed with Gil Velazquez as a veteran bench player.

He showed some heady base running the other game, scoring on a pick off attempt from the catcher to 1b when he was standing on 3rd and has just been making smart plays and shown a little ability with the bat this spring. I’m not advocating taking him North but he would be a nice guy to stash at AAA.

  12. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 1:49 pm

As for Boesch – best case scenario this turns into a similar situation to Carlos Quentin being dumped by the D’backs to Chicago. Quentin had a couple of injury plagued, bad years, got to Chicago, got healthy and started raking. Hopefully the same thing happens with Boesch. Given that he’s under team control until at least 2015, that would be a nice chit to have.

Worst case scenario – he stinks, the Yankees invested a couple of bucks in him and send him to AAA when Granderson comes off the DL.

  13. Jerkface March 16th, 2013 at 2:03 pm

Not seeing the comparisons really. Quentin destroyed the minors and was traded. Boesch has 1 good minor league season (AA) after struggling in A- & A+ and was released. Quentin’s good major league season is better than Boesch’s. Quentin walks and doesn’t strike out much. Boesch doesn’t walk and strikes out a lot.

The comparison is just getting a player coming off a bad year for very little and hopefully he produces.

  15. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 2:06 pm

In other words – just hoping for the best out of a buy low scenario.

  16. Jerkface March 16th, 2013 at 2:07 pm

Quentin wasn’t acquired for very little, Chris Carter was a good prospect.

  17. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 2:10 pm

    Jerkface –

This the Chris Carter who played with the Mets or the one who is now with the Astros? I was thinking it was the Met one in which case, not a good prospect.

  18. Jerkface March 16th, 2013 at 2:11 pm

Chris Carter the top 100 prospect for 3 years who was OPSing .900 in the minors when he was traded.

  19. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 2:11 pm

Haven’t heard your opinion of this – there’s now one spot left on the 40 man roster – Cabral’s when he goes on the 60. 3 guys not on the 40 are logical choices to break camp (Rivera, Nix, Francisco) how do you make the numbers work?

  20. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 2:13 pm

    Jerkface -

Then it was the good one – my mistake.

In that case I hope that the Boesch signing works out for the Yankees the way the Swisher trade did when the Yankees bought low on a player who had fallen out of favor with his team.

  21. Jerkface March 16th, 2013 at 2:17 pm

I don’t think thats a great comparison either. Because both of these feel like a kind of comparison to the player, where there were things working in both of their favors. Boesch looks like a guy that isn’t a baseball player. Swisher’s down year was full of tons of bad luck.

I’m not confident Boesch is going to be servicable, but theres no harm in checking him out. HE needs an overhaul on his plate approach.

Theres no way to make the numbers work, Chip. I think they only take Rivera north.

  22. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 2:18 pm

Angels are looking for a back up catcher – Yankees could trade them Stewart for some minor leaguer and then use Romine – that would clear a 40 man roster spot.

  23. blake March 16th, 2013 at 2:19 pm

Cashman called Boesch a big hairy monster..I now we know that pretty much means any LH hitter with power.

  24. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 2:19 pm

Then if Rivera is the only one of the three to break camp you’re looking at a bench of: Stewart, Nunez, Joseph and Mesa?

  25. Oscar Madison March 16th, 2013 at 2:20 pm

    Bronx:

Selleck = Mr. Baseball = NYY = Hot GF in the movie (Iruco I believe)

    Like that movie !

  26. tomingeorgia March 16th, 2013 at 2:21 pm

    Chip,
Do you think if you keep saying Joseph, that it will make it so? Musty’s the man.

  27. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 2:25 pm

    Tom,

Mustelier’s not on the 40 man roster; Joseph is.

  28. Jerkface March 16th, 2013 at 2:25 pm

Mustelier isn’t on the 40 man, tom.

  29. Jerkface March 16th, 2013 at 2:26 pm

I could see Eppley getting dumped, so I’ll say they DFA 1 pitcher and put Nix in there as well. But they can’t trade Stewart, since they’re not taking Romine north to not play he needs AB. Maybe they release Aardsma.

  30. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 2:27 pm

the only infielders (other than the starters) on the 40 are: Nunez, Joseph and Adams. Since Adams hasn’t played and Nunez only plays SS the Yankees would have to take Corban with them to have a back up infielder.

  31. Chip March 16th, 2013 at 2:28 pm

    Jerkface –

They’re not going to dump Eppley and Aardsma. Eppley I could see more than David.

  32. Jerkface March 16th, 2013 at 2:30 pm

    Maybe they DFA Adams.

  33. luis March 16th, 2013 at 2:40 pm

Just watched the last at bat of the game… It seems that we are having the same RISP problems of last season :D

Which will probably be worse this year with the ‘power outage’ that will occur compared to last year.
