WHAT TO WATCH: David Phelps makes what seems like his 30th start of the spring. It’s actually only his fifth start, but it will be his third against Atlanta. … Most of the bigger names played at home this afternoon. It’s another chance for Ben Francisco to make an impression and try to grab a roster spot. Melky Mesa, Dan Johnson, Matt Diaz and Thomas Neal are also on the trip and trying to win some sort of role on the team. … I’m not sure it’s enough to put him in the big league mix, but Jose Pirela has had a nice spring so far.
UPDATE, 5:11 p.m.: Got to my seat in the Disney press box just as Eduardo Nunez stepped in the box with a leadoff single (ultimately wiped out by a Nix double play). We’re off and running here at Champion Stadium.
UPDATE, 5:51 p.m.: Two-out RBI single by Jason Heyward has the Braves in fron 1-0 in the third, but Phelps just ended the inning by striking out Juan Francisco to strand runners at the corners.
UPDATE, 6:23 p.m.: Heyward just stole a bag off Phelps/Cervelli. Two pitches earlier, he’d been very nearly picked off by Phelps (I thought Phelps had him) and he was very nearly thrown out at second (I honestly thought Cervelli had him). The stolen bag turned into a run when Justin Upton singled to center and Melky Mesa made a horrible throw to the plate. From up here in the press box, the throw looked like it was about 15 feet over Cervelli’s head. It was bad enough that Upton got to third on the play. It’s now 2-0 Braves in the fifth.
UPDATE, 6:30 p.m.: Juan Francisco just hit a ball a million miles to center field. I think he broke Disney. It’s now 4-0.
