YANKEES (9-14)
Brett Gardner CF
Gil Velazquez SS
Ichiro Suzuki LF
Kevin Youkilis 1B
Travis Hafner DH
Brennan Boesch RF
Chris Stewart C
Ronnier Mustelier 3B
Corban Joseph 2B

RHP Adam Warren (0-1, 11.32)

PHILLIES (10-12-1)
Jimmy Rollins SS
Michael Young 3B
Chase Utley 2B
Ryan Howard 1B
Domonic Brown LF
Laynce Nix RF
Jermaine Mitchell CF
Steven Lerud C
Kyle Kendrick P

RHP Kyle Kendrick (0-2, 9.00)

TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m., ESPN

WEATHER: Bright and sunny. Temperatures in the 70s. Little bit of wind blowing from right to left.

UMPIRES: HP Phil Cuzzi, 1B Eric Cooper, 2B Dan Iassogna, 3B Chad Whitson

UNFAIR ADVANTAGE: The Phillies are letting the Yankees play with a designated hitter today, but they’re choosing not to. Philadelphia starter Kyle Kendrick will hit in the No. 9 hole.

FIRST TIMER: Boone Logan is scheduled to make his first appearance of the spring. He’s been bothered by a sore elbow, but the Yankees still believe he has time to be ready for Opening Day. Cody Eppley, Joba Chamberlain, Jim Miller, David Aardsma and Shawn Kelley also made the trip.

WHAT TO WATCH: It seems the news of the day has already happened with Derek Jeter being scratched from the lineup. … Adam Warren has the start. He could still make the big league roster as a long reliever if Phil Hughes isn’t ready and both David Phelps and Ivan Nova move into the rotation. … Another test for Ronnier Mustelier, who said his legs feel better following last week’s run-in with a railing. The Yankees are still looking at him as an alternative at third base.

JUST A HEADS UP: I’m working on uploading some video of Derek Jeter talking about his ankle and being scratched from the lineup. I’ll put that video in a post on top of the usual game post. Honestly, with all the Jeter stuff to write, I doubt I’ll have time to update the game post very much anyway. Once the video is uploaded and ready, let’s just move the game conversation to that post.

Even the best teams in all sports go thru transition years .

    ——————–

That’s the thing though their transition yrs were supposedly taking place between 06,07,08,09

Phillies top of the order is another 2008 All World team

promissory estoppel is generally an alternative to consideration as a basis for enforcing a promise

Are the Yankees estopped from pursuing this 189 budget?

Have they made a promise to field a championship contending team?

Further, are they estopped from following through with the 189 budget given that it is based on a false basis: i.e. the potentially dead contract of Alex Rodriguez. It is one thing if the 189 mandate is based on active and reasonably good contracts, but if investments went bad (such as ARod) should the Yankees realize that and determine with their wealth of resources that the true budget cap should be 216.5 million (189 + the 27.5 million from ARod, plus possible 6 million incentives for HR milestones so it could be 222.5 million).

It does not seem equitable to punish the fans with a budget austerity plan when the team has potential dead money on its ledger.

“This is why signing cc,tex, arod, cano for 100-106 million with a 189 cap is simply not a winning formula.”

@ron Absolutely right. It works right up until you decide to cap your spending at some (relatively) arbitrary number. In effect the FO becomes more handicapped than most others in baseball. You have the “win-now mentality” (that I don’t necessarily think all Yankee fans subscribe to), coupled with what effectively is an obligation to play the older guys who you’re paying a ton, and a farm that has been cultivated on the assumption that most of the time they’ll be able to go to Whole Foods to buy most of their fruit and veg at the peak of ripeness.

Your constant misappropriations as to guys abilities is hilarious, Mick. Youk is a contact hitter, Ichiro is an on base guy. No they aren’t. The end.
    ===============================
Compared to hero swingers of last year yes Youk is a contact hitter, screw your numbers.
He’s not an all or nothing free swinger.
As far as Ichiro goes I don’t care what his OBP is, he’s nothing if not a pure hitter like Youkilis.
If you don’t think they will do better than last years version of non-situational hitters you are wrong.
Try looking at the game without the prism of your spreadsheets you might enjoy it.

They do not need ml talent for cano,if they signed a hamilton to replace the lost offense.
Ml talent costs money, and you are only trading ml talent for ml talent.
Yes,maybe cano get’s you 2 lesser players, but trading him for 2 top prospects cost very little money, and you possibly fill 2 positions with high end talent for a long time, but signing a hamilton would have been very important because it replaces cano’s lost offense, keeps the fans from revolting, and puts us in a position to get 2 high end prospects that we simply never see in the draft.

So basically hamilton replaces cano, but we get 2 top prospects in return, and money wise,it is a wash, but way fewer years for hamilton.
Even if it wasn’t hamilton, the formula should be the same.

    Simple question.

Are we a better team with hamilton, olt, and a very good, top maybe 10-30 pitching prospect,or just signing cano for 6-10 years?
I think that is the easiest question to answer that i have ever heard

@jnorris427: Tyler Austin started his afternoon here with a ringing double into LCF. Alex Smith on the bump for Trenton. #yankees

  10. Against All Odds March 19th, 2013 at 1:15 pm

Austin can just flat out hit.

  11. Rich in NJ March 19th, 2013 at 1:18 pm

I’m still liking the idea of having the Trenton roster in the Bronx this season.

  12. blake March 19th, 2013 at 1:18 pm

Id rather watch the minor league game

  13. Carly March 19th, 2013 at 1:19 pm

Maine – I’ll be up in Brunswick this summer…any tips on how to calculate my trip so that I’m in Maine the one day per year that the ocean is warm enough to swim in?

    ————————————————————————————

That day hasn’t come yet.

I guess it depends on what shade of blue you can stand your legs to be.

  15. MaineYankee March 19th, 2013 at 1:25 pm

    Hassey

Rather than try to plan for when the ocean is warm you should plan for when Trenton is playing in Portland.

It’s a nice ballpark. Good atmosphere.

Lots of Yankee fans there when Trenton comes to town.

I think the yankees wen’t in a very bad direction, and unless they scrap the 189 are going to struggle to find the proper direction going forward.

They should of traded cano, granderson, hughes, then signed hamilton, and one,or two more free agents, with hughes combined with a few players brings back a ml ready bat.
Phelps takes hughes spot,or you can trade a phelps/nova,and keep hughes, but hughes is going to cost a lot of money in 2014.
The yankees have to play this chess game wisely, and that entails trading your expensive guys for high end prospects, smart trades, wise fa signings.
You don’t need a tex at 1b,or a cano at 2b,just like we did not need arod at 3b.
    Now look at his contract.
Youy need 3 big bats in a lineup, and the right mix after that, with great pitching.

Wish the Yankees bought low on Dom Brown this offseason :(

Glad Adam Warren isn’t getting hammered.

  18. Hassey March 19th, 2013 at 1:36 pm

Maine – You think they’d let me bring my dog into the park? I’d be happy to buy him a ticket and feed him three hot dogs if I have to.

  19. Jerkface March 19th, 2013 at 1:39 pm
