Earlier today, Brian Cashman talked about Derek Jeter’s injury and what it could mean going forward. The video above has Cashman’s initial comments about the injury and how it’s being treated. The qoutes below are some of Cashman’s comments about what Jeter’s injury could mean in the regular season.
Will Jeter be ready on April 1?
“If you ask him, Opening Day would be a certainty. In fairness, I don’t know yet. We’ve got to be in a position where he can play a full nine innings of defense, be able to do back-to-back and all this other stuff. There’s some time left. We’ll see how he responds, but I can’t give you certainty now that what he’s just experienced isn’t going to push it back a little bit. I just don’t know.”
So, is the disabled list possible?
“I can’t rule it out until we see how the next 10 days goes. I just can’t rule it out. We’ve got to do what’s right for him. Whatever is right for him, it will be right for us. There’s a reason Joe Girardi played Nunez at shortstop the entire spring. In the event that we ever have any issues as we move through this stuff, we’ll have someone ready to go. I’m not saying he’s going to be a DL, but I can’t tell you he won’t be.”
Will he have to deal with this all year?
“I hope not. I don’t think so. Listen, it’s not like we’ve had a center fielder or a shortstop – a middle-of-the-diamond type player – come off a broken ankle in October at age 38 or whatever. I don’t think (it will linger all season), but I also know that it’s a tough injury to have regardless. I know he’s healthy, and he can do more than your (usual) exceptional human being right now, but can he do it on a daily basis in March and early April with the cold? Those things I can’t answer. They’re all fair questions. If anyone can do it, Derek Jeter can. But I can’t speak for Derek and I can’t speak for unknowns. I just acknowledge that they’re fair questions that we’re going to have to wait and see.”
On Derek Jeter in general
“I hate to say it, but he’s earned the category of, you just assume everything is going to be great because he’s just always found a way. I hate to say it, but you take it for granted. No matter what he’s up against, he’ll always find a way. He’s going to find a way. That’s what makes him tick and that’s our whole experience with him. That’s the entire aura of Derek Jeter. He just finds a way. He’s being asked to find a way to come through this injury over time. The time is the issue. What we’re experiencing with him now, I wouldn’t consider serious. It’s a time issue. Over time, he will find a way through it. It might take a little more time. That might be the case. That’s alright. We’ve just got to do the right thing and respond to how he’s reacting.”
