Otani’s fastball has some zip obviously and he shows a passable slider and a very slow curve (in warmups, didn’t use it in the game)

  2. Jerkface March 21st, 2013 at 11:55 am

JF – How would that work..? Do they already have a plan for how to slot picks? The international draft thing confuses the hell out of me…

Theres no plan yet. Its either a separate draft or they fold it into the rule 4 draft, but they have a lot of work to do before its something they roll out. A lot of issues dealing with all the different leagues.

MLB is hastily trying to implement an international draft so they can stick him in it

Just one more cheap shot at toppling the Titan known as NYY

    Yea pretty much

  4. yankeefeminista March 21st, 2013 at 11:58 am

Yeah well if there is an Intl draft the union probably figures that there is more money for the established players. Sigh.

    Ken_Rosenthal
Announcement from #Dodgers on Hanley coming shortly. But he is headed for surgery.

  6. blake March 21st, 2013 at 12:00 pm

Is this where the Dodgers offer all their prospects and 200 million for Tulo?

  7. yankeefeminista March 21st, 2013 at 12:01 pm

Unknown, you are officially challenged to sit upstairs at NYS in April. Usually too cold to even score b/c you’ll have to wear ski gloves. I was at the snowed out makeup of the Matsui debut game among others; until you commune with the April (and October!) winds, you know not of what you speak. ;)

Passan: MLB targeting A-Rod (and Braun) in Biogenesis probe http://rab.me/Z2ISJ9

Dumb dumb dumb… no way that MLB turns up anything without the cooperation from the other external investigators. The players aren’t going to voluntarily rat themselves out to gain immunity over charges that might never be handed down.

  9. blake March 21st, 2013 at 12:05 pm

@Ken_Rosenthal: #Dodgers: Torn ligament in Ramirez’s right thumb. Surgery tomorrow in LA. Thumb immobilized for three weeks. Expected back in about 8 weeks.

  10. Shame Spencer March 21st, 2013 at 12:06 pm

JF – Then that’s pretty effed up if they’re intentionally trying to delay the investigation into Diaz’s age to accommodate something that’s not close to being ready for implementation.

  11. Jerkface March 21st, 2013 at 12:07 pm

    Shame,

I was joking about mlb doing that, though with all the bad press for them lately it seems like a thing they’d do. poes law and all that.

  12. Shame Spencer March 21st, 2013 at 12:07 pm

    @craigcalcaterra 1m

Why is anyone worried about Hanley? He played the important games. All he’s missing is the boring and lame regular season. #Morosi’d

    @FeinsandNYDN

Here’s my column on Eduardo Nunez from today’s Daily News http://soa.li/oQoCawL

    —————–

How do you write this article starting off with the sentence: ” Eduardo Nunez knows you don’t have faith in him.” Without mentioning that the ‘you’ is…. Brian Cashman and the Yankees organization.

I think plenty of fans have faith in Nunez.

I think our opinions only count when it comes to HRs….

Because he clears all of his columns with Cashman before hitting submit?

    Rich, QFT.

  19. Shame Spencer March 21st, 2013 at 12:32 pm

^ That is a strong possibility.. even Chad didn’t mention it in the last post. What he said was, “Brian Cashman made it plain and clear that Nunez will be the Yankees starting shortstop if Jeter isn’t ready to open the season” with no mention of him also laughing off the idea that Nunez should get 500 PAs lol.

It’s borderline comical how much the Yankees control the message. It’s very undervalued.

  20. UnKnown March 21st, 2013 at 12:33 pm

YF – Sounds good. Plus then I would get to take in a Yankee game.
Of course you probably have no reason to ever venture to MinneSNOWta, but if you ever did once your breath is just taken away after a few seconds because of the cold, I bet you would be yearning for your seat at NYS.

I think we can both agree that neither one of us would be sweating at either location. Have a good day.

  21. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2013 at 12:36 pm

If Nunez gets 500 AB and performs well, Feinsand and some others will advance the idea that Cashman’s prior statement was a successful attempt at lighting a fire under Nunez, with accompanying after the fact quotes from Cashman to that effect.

  22. Warning Track Power March 21st, 2013 at 12:38 pm

Last night MLB Network featured the Yankees on 30 clubs in 30 days.
Let’s just say the network “experts” are not giving the Yankees much of a chance in 2013.
Billy Ripken loves the O’s. Eric Byrnes feels the Yankees will be lucky to win a wild card and
Mike Lowell said he think the Yankees are in big trouble.

The Jays are the top pick and you know what, I don’t mind the Yankees are playing the role of the underdog in 2013.
    The season is 162 games.
The season is not decided in March or April or May.

MLB Network led the viewers to believe the Yankees will dig themselves a huge hole at the beginning of the season to due injuries.
The network basically had Jeter laying in a hospital bed with a busted ankle due to the “setback” yesterday.

  23. pat March 21st, 2013 at 12:48 pm

“MLB Network led the viewers to believe the Yankees will dig themselves a huge hole at the beginning of the season to due injuries.”

Granted the AL East has appeared to have more parity top to bottom lately but “It’s not where you start but where you finish” has been the theme around this blog for many of the years.

  24. yankeefeminista March 21st, 2013 at 12:49 pm

Unknown, well come on down then to see a game. As for the cold, I spent a semester in Russia–St. Pete, Moscow, and time in Helsinki and went to college and grad school in New England, regularly used to go out to western Canada, plus have been a football season ticket holder for many years, so a little Minny cold I can deal with. Btw, my brother went to the U of M! Go Gophers! (when they aren’t playing my schools) :)

  25. Warning Track Power March 21st, 2013 at 12:50 pm

I agree. Not once did the panel mention what you just said.
They basically talked about all the injured players and where the runs would come from and the team is Old, etc…..

    Cashmoney,

Free food is only included in legends seats. Field MVP will get you waiter service but nothing is free. Some MVP seats will give you passes to the Audi club and the Mohegan bar but nothing included.

  33. yankeefeminista March 21st, 2013 at 1:13 pm

Cash, you can sit in Delta and get wait service if you want to sit in main. Great seats in the strike zone, preferable to field in my estimate.

“Blake, I agree with you concerning the silliness of the media, But you are also very down on the team. Like very very down on the team. So what is the difference between your view and the media’s.”

That’s not really true…..I’ve said many times that I thought they’d be in the race if their pitching stays healthy and that their pedigree always seems to find a way…..

a lot of the stuff I say is in a tongue in cheek or joking manner because I am in fact irritated with this whole budget thing the ownership is trying to spin…..that doesn’t mean they can’t still win this year though or that they are doomed short or long term.

Also another obvious difference is that the media seems to be enjoying the storyline….and if it were true I certainly would not

  37. yankeefeminista March 21st, 2013 at 1:19 pm

Cash, re: wait service, just be prepared for people to stand up doing play b/c for some unfortunately the game is a secondary consideration.

  38. Carly March 21st, 2013 at 1:20 pm

It appears as if Hal’s plan to save money will probably backfire on him for the money he will lose for game attendance and other revenue might not be there, thus offsetting any potential savings. Additionally, YES needs to make sure they do not do what NESN and the Sox did when the ratings dropped. From my informal survey (plus from articles and broadcasts) level of interest in the Yankees has dipped. You not only have general fans who are complacent of years of winning, but the diehards are upset as well. The irony of this austerity plan is that Hal may not end up saving anything as any tax saving could be canceled out by lost revenue/advertisement dollars.

  39. blake March 21st, 2013 at 1:23 pm

I picked the Yankees to win 89 games…..which likely woukd grab a WC spot….that’s hardly a doomsday scenario. Many members of the media act like they won’t be .500 and act like they enjoy that possibility…..that was what I was talking about…..so yea it’s totally different than what I think

  40. Russell Munson March 21st, 2013 at 1:26 pm

Getting the payroll down could be part of a plan to eventually sell the team. Ever since that up front balloon payment from Fox on the sale of part of YES I’ve gotten the sense that’s where things are heading.

And frankly, given what I’m seeing from Hal, sign me up for a sale as long as it’s not to someone named Dolan.

  41. Shame Spencer March 21st, 2013 at 1:29 pm

I’m just still really confused.. what was the tax rate on the dollars spent above $179 in the old CBA. Someone summon JF, because I thought if the Yankees kept their payroll static for next year they’d still save money based on the new CBA.

  42. Cashmoney March 21st, 2013 at 1:30 pm

Jeers, just on principle, as I am looking at the price, it’s hard for me to justify in ponying up 4k for 2 legend seats, not with team I am about to see on opening day. MVP looks reasonable, fem, thanks for heads up.

  43. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2013 at 1:30 pm

  45. NYYROC March 21st, 2013 at 1:34 pm

Yogi commented that the NYY should find a way to get Nunez 500 ABs. Yogi has forgotten more baseball than Cashman will ever know. I’d go with Yogi’s opinion and give Eduardo a chance.

  46. Cashmoney March 21st, 2013 at 1:36 pm

Nunez deserves a chance. Let the kid play and forget about it for awhile. Make an evaluation after 300 ABs.

  47. UnKnown March 21st, 2013 at 1:37 pm

Yeah I thought it was about the same on all dollars over $179. That already saves them money, but everyone keeps discussing the benefits of getting under without understanding both the new and the old CBA.

If Nunez gets 500 AB and performs well, Feinsand and some others will advance the idea that Cashman’s prior statement was a successful attempt at lighting a fire under Nunez, with accompanying after the fact quotes from Cashman to that effect.

    What prior statement?

If Cashman did not have faith in Nunez he would be headed to the minors before the season started and Nix would be the SS.

  51. Shame Spencer March 21st, 2013 at 1:50 pm

The Yankees general manager, speaking on Thursday’s Post-Cast with Mike Vaccaro and Mark Hale, said he believes Nunez projects well at shortstop, but doesn’t think he could be an every day player at third base, left field or center field because of his limitations offensively. Cashman cited Nunez’s .678 minor league on-base plus slugging percentage as an indicator.

“That’s not a great offensive player,” Cashman said.

The GM said there are misconceptions that “come and go with our fan base regarding certain players” and he includes the 25-year-old Nunez in that category.

“There’s a lot of opinions on him and what he could or couldn’t do,” Cashman said. “It’s interesting to me. I’ve had a lot of people say, you’ve gotta get 500 at bats for this guy, find a position for him as if he’s some sort of offensive juggernaut.”

Read more: Cashman: Nunez wouldn’t work in outfield or at third base for Yankees http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/.....z2OCKLxgt1

  52. Shame Spencer March 21st, 2013 at 1:52 pm

He then goes on to say he’d feel comfortable with him taking over for Jeter at SS, just no where else on the field because of how his bat profiles.

…this is a great idea. I might do this!

  55. Doreen March 21st, 2013 at 2:00 pm

Well, truth is Nunez is not an offensive juggernaut, but he is a nice player to have and is interesting to watch and he’s one of those guys that does enough to make you wonder what he could do playing everyday.

Which is probably why Cashman and Co. still have him around.

  56. Cashmoney March 21st, 2013 at 2:05 pm

Look, we are not going to know what Nunez is capable or not til he gets a chance, hopefully here. Cashman’s has a point in Nunez overall ops in the minor in terms how the Yankees internally see him as a player. It has it’s merits, However, WTF as GM do you want to disclose your evaluation of Nunez so candidly to the media and essentially to other teams? What purpose does that serve?

    WTF is wrong with Cashman?

  57. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2013 at 2:11 pm

Nunez is around because he is the best option they have.

I’m not sure why he was a dealbreaker in the Cliff Lee deal, but whatever. It’s water the bridge at this point.

ProductiveOuts: Ricky Romero pitched in 4 innings of a minor league game today. 5 BB, 4 ER. Got 7 outs total. #Jays

How does one get into the 4th inning of a game without getting enough outs to get out of the 3rd inning?

  59. Tackelberry March 21st, 2013 at 2:15 pm

Off topic, but the NFL is turning into a real pu**y league, sorry, Owners have implemented new rule against a RB being able to lower his helmet when running into a defender. Ridiculous! Thats part oif the game for 100 years. RB does that to try and get extra yardage. Also hear eventually they want o eliminater kickoffs totally and start each series from the 20 yard line. Unbeleivable

“How does one get into the 4th inning of a game without getting enough outs to get out of the 3rd inning?”

It says pitched in 4 innings, maybe he didn’t start, got the last out in one inning, got through the next two and then failed to retire a batter in his fourth?

  64. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2013 at 2:18 pm

    “I’m glad. Wouldn’t want Lee’s contract now.”

They were willing to sign him anyway as a FA, so as far as money goes, the trade aspect has been superseded.

The Yankees paid 42.5% last year and the threshold was 178. Now the rate will be 50%. Then, in 2014 the threshold goes up to 189. So lets assume that at the end of the year including benefits the Yankees have an actual club payroll of 230.

    230-178*.5 = 26 million in tax
    230-189*.5 = 20.5 million

They were going to get savings no matter what.

  66. FiretheUMPIRE March 21st, 2013 at 2:20 pm

    Pat,

I noted earlier a Toronto newspaper story saying the Jays were making changes to Romero’s delivery. Working well so far I see. That sounds like trouble at this point of the spring. Let’s secretly hope so.

  68. pat March 21st, 2013 at 2:26 pm

    Munson-

Good outside the box thinking on your part. Thanks.

    austinmac-

Your earlier post is what made me stop to read the tweet about Romero. Sounds like a work in progress.

  69. austinmac March 21st, 2013 at 2:28 pm

    Jerkface,

But, the new CBA mandated the cuts. We were told so. They wouldn’t mislead us, I’m sure.

  70. austinmac March 21st, 2013 at 2:34 pm

    Tackleberry,

There certainly may be changes in the way football is played. I think there has to be if you look at the frequency of brain injuries in players and look at the life expectancy of NFL players. Both are very scary.

I’m not sure if rule changes will help safety, but lawsuits will be coming and failure to act could cost the NFL enormous –very enormous–costs in litigation and judgments for failure to produce studies to players, failure to warn, failure to require safer equipment etc.
