All of MLB to honor Sandy Hook victims

The Yankees already announced that they will be honoring the Sandy Hook school shooting victims on Opening Day. Today, Major League Baseball announced that all 30 teams will do the same. Here’s the announcement from the league.

Major League Baseball will honor the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting during the opening games of the 2013 Regular Season. All players, managers, coaches, umpires and on-field personnel will wear a symbolic ribbon patch and, with fans, observe a pre-game moment of silence in their opening games (March 31st to April 2nd) in a league-wide effort to remember the 26 individuals who lost their lives on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut.

“The unimaginable tragedy that befell Newtown, Connecticut will never be forgotten,” said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig. “Major League Baseball, all 30 Clubs and baseball fans from around the country and Canada offer our deepest sympathies and our unbridled support as the community continues to heal from this heartbreaking day.”

The patch features the official seal of Newtown, along with a black memorial ribbon and 26 stars, signifying one for every victim, lining each side of the patch. Additionally, for each of the 30 MLB Clubs, MLB.com will auction an authenticated jersey signed by all players and coaches on the respective Club’s Opening Day roster, with all proceeds benefitting the Sandy Hook School Support Fund. Major League Baseball, MLB Advanced Media and MLB Network encourage fans to contribute to the Sandy Hook Support Fund by texting NEWTOWN to 80888.

  5. tucker March 22nd, 2013 at 10:29 pm

Wow, not much going on here tonight.

Jmills, how about your top 5 Canadian bands. Rush and Neil Young have to be in there, no?

  6. FiretheUMPIRE March 22nd, 2013 at 10:31 pm

Neil Young – hardest musician to pick a favorite song. Heart of Gold, Harvest Moon, Sugar Mountain, Hey Hey My My, After The Gold Rush, Southern Man

  7. blake March 22nd, 2013 at 10:32 pm

Glad they got Wang back….good depth move with no risk attached.

Tom, we just wanted to make the game interesting there…..survive and advance!

Good work by the Yanks and MLB

  8. FiretheUMPIRE March 22nd, 2013 at 10:41 pm

Adding Wang will allow them to trade Hughes. This way Nova, Phelps or Pineda would start a Game 4 after CC, Kuroda and Andy. Hughes isn’t really needed so hopefully he’s worth something in a trade. Since I believe Cano’s staying I believe Granderson and Hughes are goners, Joba too. So i hope they can get something for him. I guess I would be OK with draft picks too like what happened with Soriano and Swisher.

  9. FiretheUMPIRE March 22nd, 2013 at 10:45 pm

Canada has Neil Young but we have THIS man:

That was an awful game. I hope they got that out of their system, because if they play like that again they have no chance. Haven’t watched the Big East this year but if Villanova was in the ACC they would be a bottom dweller.

  12. tucker March 22nd, 2013 at 11:13 pm

Neil Young — more the body of work than any individual song. He’s just a great songwriter. Neil Young is to songwriting what Cashman is to veteran dumpster diving. True art.

“That was an awful game. I hope they got that out of their system, because if they play like that again they have no chance”

They played well early then I think kinda got too comfortable and lost their edge….this team has very little big game experience and it kinda showed there as they took their foot off the pedal and almost couldn’t find it again…..but yup better bring it against Kansas

  14. Carlo March 22nd, 2013 at 11:20 pm

Nova an ACC bottom dwellar? Dude, you are aware the acc got 4 teams in the tourney this year, right? Nova was the 7th or 8th best team in the big east. They made the tournament. The 5th best team in the ACC did not. How exactly would nova be a bottom dwellar in a conference whose brighest light right now is the influx coming from the big east?

  15. Tar March 22nd, 2013 at 11:21 pm

    Hey Tom

How did the Georgia Bulldogs do? Oh wait….

Maybe that’s why you have such an obvious case of Tar Heel envy.

  16. blake March 22nd, 2013 at 11:23 pm

Ah I knew Carlo would show up to defend his soon to be a thing of the past Big East :)

  17. Tar March 22nd, 2013 at 11:25 pm

“How exactly would nova be a bottom dwellar in a conference whose brighest light right now is the influx coming from the big east?”

I knew that would drag you Carlo. :D

Fact is I’ve watched a lot of ACC games this year and Nova would get smoked. UNC played awful and still won how do you explain that?

Must suck to not have a conference to root for anymore huh. I guess no more talking smack, so you better get it all out now.

  18. Carlo March 22nd, 2013 at 11:25 pm

Just stating facts fellas. That was carolinas 3rd win this year against a n ncaa tourney team. They were the acc’s 3rd best team. Schools of deaf and blind were acc bottom dwellars this year.

  19. blake March 22nd, 2013 at 11:28 pm

The ACC was down this year….Carolina is very young and has grown….it’s one of roys better coaching jobs IMO to get them this far.

Bottom line….they beat Villanova and should have much worse than they did

  20. Carlo March 22nd, 2013 at 11:29 pm

I just explained it man. Nova was a tourney team. The ACC had 4 of them in total. Ur argument makes no sense.

  21. Tar March 22nd, 2013 at 11:29 pm

    Blake

Next it will be a Bret on here talking smack about UConn. Oh wait

  22. Rich in NJ March 22nd, 2013 at 11:31 pm

    Yay, Wang.

  23. Carlo March 22nd, 2013 at 11:31 pm

The good news is, the years of absurdly top heavy acc basketball are over as some real meat has finally arrived. Then again, the cupcake #1 seeds coming out of the ACC days are likely over as well given schedule enhancements

  24. blake March 22nd, 2013 at 11:32 pm

I’ll have to check the mets blog for Bret’s take on Uconn I guess

  25. Carlo March 22nd, 2013 at 11:33 pm

Cupcake #1 seeds? Please….Duke and UNC pretty much always deserve it when they are and generally show it in the tourney

  28. Tar March 22nd, 2013 at 11:35 pm

“I just explained it man. Nova was a tourney team. The ACC had 4 of them in total. Ur argument makes no sense.”

The ACC was down this year, and if Nova was in the ACC they would be in the bottom half. Nova is like a Maryland was this year.

God I hate typing on this iPad

  29. Carlo March 22nd, 2013 at 11:37 pm

Fellas – I would love to discuss/lend my wisdom and help, but I must root in my Hilltoppers, they need me more than ever now.

  30. blake March 22nd, 2013 at 11:39 pm

@PeteAbe: Seems somehow fitting that Big East teams are crumbling. Just like their league did.

I didn’t tell him to tweet that I promise

  31. Carlo March 22nd, 2013 at 11:40 pm

So Nova played in the NIT? Like Maryland? This is the point, Nova wasn’t like maryland, they were like unc and nc st…..middling tourney teams that were in the top half of the Acc.

  32. Carlo March 22nd, 2013 at 11:41 pm

Pete is a uconn fan, he has no league.

  33. Bronx Jeers March 22nd, 2013 at 11:47 pm

@NotHankStein: That little nerd Cashman texted me “Got Wang back!”. If he cared about the #Yankees as much as his schlong we might have a chance at .500.

  34. Tar March 22nd, 2013 at 11:48 pm

“So Nova played in the NIT? Like Maryland”

Did you watch them play? Maryland beats Nova this year and probably easier than the Heels did.

Oh wait the NCAA picked Nova so they ABSOLUTLY better, right Carlo?

  35. blake March 22nd, 2013 at 11:53 pm

@JonHeymanCBS: #pirates Gaby Sanchez appears to be available. could #yankees be a fit?

  36. Carlo March 22nd, 2013 at 11:58 pm

Nah dude, you’re right, because u think so, maryland is better than nova …..and clearly the selection committee agrees with you but just chose nova anyway. And obviously they are bias because that is there job. Doubt it had anything to do with 0 quality non conference wins and a losing record in the 5th best conference in the country this year.

#facts…..not to be confused with agenda driven opinions. Just admit you misspoke, thats all.

  37. Carlo March 23rd, 2013 at 12:01 am

@johnheyman does gaby sanchez suck? Then yes, the yankees could be a fit

  38. Rich in NJ March 23rd, 2013 at 12:03 am

    v. LHP

    2012: .240 .333 .396 .729

    2011: .295 .420 .481 .901

    Career: .291 .385 .484 .869

I guess if he is priced at his 2012 level of platoon production (which would be almost for free), he might be worth a look, but I would rather go with Youk at 1B and Musty at 3B.

  39. Tar March 23rd, 2013 at 12:09 am

    Carlo

Fact is you haven’t seen both teams play, but keep on with your selection committee picks are gospel. But really whatever because I don’t care about either of those two teams.

BTW what’s your team Carlo? Or do you just root Big East as a group?

  40. Carlo March 23rd, 2013 at 12:14 am

Good morning RadioKev. You seem to be the only one up this Saturday morning back in the States. It’s always good to read your comments – especially since I nearly always agree with you!

For you and anyone else who comes around this morning; has anyone read Marty Appel’s “Pinstripe Empire” and could you please give me your thoughts. I want to buy it for someone as a gift but would like to know if it’s just covering old ground (this is a very knowledgeable fan) or a worthwhile addition to a Yankee fan’s library.

    Thanks for any feedback.

  54. RadioKev March 23rd, 2013 at 7:18 am

    Morning Yanks61,

I’m not familiar with Pinstripe Empire, but the reviews on Amazon are glowing: http://www.amazon.com/Pinstrip.....08194922#_

I might have to pick it up too.

    Where are you located?

  55. yanks61 March 23rd, 2013 at 7:26 am

Thanks RadioKev. I appreciate it. I did read the reviews on Amazon.com and it looks great, but I was concerned that it may be a re-hash of a lot of stuff this fan already knows. It does look like it contains a lot of insider information though.

I’m in France (the Loire Valley – about 100 miles southwest of Paris.) We’ve been here about 28 years (and now recently retired.) My wife is French and I worked for an American company in Paris. I’m from the NY area originally and have been a Yankee fan since about 1952 (that’s the first WS I have a pretty good memory of.) And yourself?

Wow, that’s excellent. What’s the take on baseball in France? I’m also just recently getting into baking bread… I’ll have to make a pilgrimage sometime ;)

I grew up with the 90s dynasty team, and really became a big fan around… 2001. I live just outside of Boston, I’ve been floating around New England for the past few years.

  58. RadioKev March 23rd, 2013 at 7:49 am

You know what the Yanks should do?

Send Phelps down, and bring Wang up.

  59. yanks61 March 23rd, 2013 at 8:01 am

Kev, believe it or not, there’s actually a baseball league in france Here’s the story from the NYTimes:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08.....&_r=0

Fédération Française de Baseball et de Softball has been around for a while now. As you undoubtedly know, it takes a back seat to soccer, rugby and even basketball.

You couldn’t find a better place to learn about baking bread! There was another good article in the NYT a couple of months back about one of Paris’s most famous bakeries. Sorry, I can’t think of the name just now.

You picked a great time to have become a Yankee. A bit like myself. We’ve both been spoiled.

Though I grew up in its shadow and then lived in Manhattan for years, I love Boston and the whole of the New England area. We visited often when we were still living back in the States.

After Phelps fills is done filling in for Hughes they’ll put him in the pen.

He’s a victim of his own success at being versatile.

I think the Yankees see him as a Ramiro Mendoza type.

    ———-

I’m not sure I follow you. I don’t see how Wang impedes Phelps’ development. Phelps clearly takes precedence over Wang. I’m suggest the Yankees make Wang their long man, and send Phelps to AAA to start. Phelps’ development is far more hampered by the Yankees desire to have him in the pen.

It’s not like the Yankees won’t send Phelps down to AAA because they’ve now signed Wang.

I’d take a healthy Wang over Warren, I’ll say that much. Wang was quite good before that unfortunate foot injury. Maybe Brett Marshall can be a similar type of pitcher. Nuno may or may not be a starter. In either case, I don’t see how a AAA rotation depth move hampers anyone.

  66. Deal With It March 23rd, 2013 at 8:24 am

When Pettitte, Kuroda and possibly Hughes (as a FA) are going to need to be replaced very soon I just can’t see the Yankees not learning from their past mistakes of jerking young starters back and forth

IMO, Phelps has earned his starting shot and they should leave him be so his confidence remains intact and he gains the experience he needs.

  67. RadioKev March 23rd, 2013 at 8:26 am

So who’s getting booted out of the rotation? Phelps strong suit is his confidence on the mound, I wouldn’t worry about that. He looks like a veteran out there.

  68. RadioKev March 23rd, 2013 at 8:33 am

    yanks61,

Love that pic on the NY Times article.

Yeah, Boston is nice. I lived in Vermont too. Love that state.

  69. RadioKev March 23rd, 2013 at 8:36 am

“Baseball is culture,” Rolland said through an interpreter, adding: “It’s like wine. You can talk about wine for half an hour before you even taste it, especially in France. Baseball is wine, and soccer is beer. You just drink it, but you don’t talk about it.”

    :)

  70. Deal With It March 23rd, 2013 at 8:37 am

Why not leave CMW down at AAA so he can get some innings under his belt after his last couple of injury plagued seasons ? Hughes starts the season on the DL and whoever (Phelps – Nova) shines at the beginning of the year would remain in the rotation ? I think Phelps will win out.

I would hate to see Phelps get the Joba treatment of back and forth, back and forth of starter reliever, starter reliever…………..
