Phil Hughes needed nearly 60 pitches to get through three innings at the minor league complex today. He said some of the inefficiency was due to intentionally focusing on some offspeed pitches that he didn’t locate especially well, and some of that was because he generally wasn’t sharp early in the game.

“I’m probably not where I need to be,” he said. “But I still have some time to get my pitch count up and get there.”

The video above has some of today’s action at the minor league complex, as well as Hughes discussing the start and how he feels about his first real game action of the spring. He acknowledged that it’s “probably likely” that he’ll open the season on the disabled list.

I like Sherman’s suggestion in this morning’s Post about sending a bullpen arm (David Aardsma) to the Pirates for one of their first basemen – either Gaby Sanchez or Garrett Jones.

I’m not sure if Aardsma is enough for Jones; but it’s a good place to start.

If he is not crippled he wants to play. He seems to be really pushing to play opening day. Sometimes it’s smarter to back off a little.

And going to the trainer when his ankle was stiff doesn’t qualify as “being smarter”?

I think it’s more likely Girardi noticed him flexing his ankle a lot like it said in the article and told him to go see the trainer.

JS, you’re assuming that it hapened differently from the way it’s been reported. The intial reports were Jeter went to the trainers after BP was over. Nothing mentioning Girardi getting the trainer to look at it was reported by anyone.

Don’t know if you folks in the Northeast see these commercials for Duluth Trading Company, maker of men’s underwear. If you haven’t seen them, they’re worth a look. They know their market!

I’m not assuming, I’m suspecting, based on his public comments and the fact that it says Girardi saw him flexing his ankle during bp. If his public comments are all a show, then I wish he would stop.

Phil Hughes should get the Carl Pavano award for being a dog. This guy is softer than a roll of Charmin. Always hurt, always a big dissapointment, on the Mets he would be a 6 game winner.
    Another of Brian Cashman’s mistakes.
