Video: Hughes not where he needs to be; has some time to get there

Phil Hughes needed nearly 60 pitches to get through three innings at the minor league complex today. He said some of the inefficiency was due to intentionally focusing on some offspeed pitches that he didn’t locate especially well, and some of that was because he generally wasn’t sharp early in the game.
“I’m probably not where I need to be,” he said. “But I still have some time to get my pitch count up and get there.”
The video above has some of today’s action at the minor league complex, as well as Hughes discussing the start and how he feels about his first real game action of the spring. He acknowledged that it’s “probably likely” that he’ll open the season on the disabled list.
