Sunday notes: Nunez set as Jeter’s replacement

For at least one position, Joe Girardi left no doubt about his plans for Opening Day.

“Nuney will play shortstop,” he said.

Derek Jeter has not been officially placed on the disabled list, but that move is coming, and even Jeter himself seems to know it.

“I know Derek extremely well,” general manager Brian Cashman said. “I’ve been with him a long, long time, and I can read his face. And his face today tells me the reality of this circumstance is starting to sink in; that this disabled list situation might be necessary.”

Right on cue, Nunez went 2-for-3 today. He had an RBI triple, drew a walk, stole a base (and got caught stealing) and played error-free defense including a nice charging play for a tough out. There have been several times this spring that Nunez has bounced a throw to first, and Girardi said that’s been intentional. Nunez is letting the ball skip rather than letting it sail.

“We’ve been pleased with the way he’s went about his business,” Girardi said. “He’s worked very hard on his defense. He’s swung the bat well. He’s run the bases well. He provides a speed option that we really didn’t have last year, a whole lot. You get him and Gardy in the lineup, and it could create some problems.

• Jeter will likely stay in Tampa when the Yankees break camp. “We have to get him to be able to play shortstop,” Cashman said. “DHing for us isn’t going to get him where we need to be.”

• Mariano Rivera was sent for tests because of recurring headaches, but those tests came back negative. “Not worried at all,” Cashman said. “We have to follow certain protocols. He mentioned he was having some migraines, so there’s a fire drill you have to run through just to be cautious, so we did that expecting the results to be negative, and they were, so there’s no issues. He might have the migraines, but they’re not anything (more serious). All those tests were good.”

• Rivera allowed two hits today, but ultimately pitched another scoreless inning.

• Brennan Boesch is expected to play after tomorrow’s off day. “Boesch is feeling good,” Cashman said. “He thinks we’re overly cautious.”

• Two home runs today for Kevin Youkilis, including a go-ahead two-run shot in the eighth inning. “I’m having good at-bats, getting in a good hitter’s position and staying there as long as possible,” Youkilis said.

• Of course, the big home run was Ronnier Mustelier’s walkoff in the 10th. It’s going to be interesting to see what the Yankees do with Mustelier. The Jeter injury could open a door for at least a short-term role in New York serving as a backup infield and occasional starter at third.

• Travis Hafner is hitting just .135 this spring, but he did hit his second home run today.

• Joba Chamberlain, Boone Logan and Cody Eppley each pitched a scoreless inning today. … David Aardsma blew a save in the ninth, giving up one run on two hits. … Vidal Nuno was brought into the game in the middle of the fourth inning. Preparation for a big league relief role? … Adam Warren was charged with five runs, but only one was earned. He pitched 3.2 innings and had his most trouble after a Youkilis error in the fourth.

• Francisco Cervelli threw out two base runners today. He also had a base hit. At this point, I’m fully expecting him to be the regular catcher. Maybe not quite everyday, but at least three out of five.

@Ken_Rosenthal: @DCameronFG Dave, it’s not 2/10, for sure. Could be 2/5, for all I know. Just told Angels will pay at least 32 of 42.

    —————

This is exactly the type of reactionary move a lot of us anticipated… it better be more than $32 million because even a $5 mil AAV is too much for Wells.

@bkabak: Gonna pay Vernon Wells $5 million each for the next years but couldn’t afford a catcher or right fielder this winter.
    ————-

Hey, who knows…the $20 mil committed to Ichiro, Wells and Jeter (assuming he picks up his option) might help force the Yankees to ignore the $189.

In that case, whatever Wells does is worth it.

  3. Chip March 24th, 2013 at 6:44 pm

Mustelier is clearly out hitting Rivera – and he and Youkilis are a better combination in the field at the corners than Youkilis and Rivera.

    Mustelier should be the choice.

  4. blake March 24th, 2013 at 6:44 pm

Here comes the KU run….was inevitable

  5. Shame Spencer March 24th, 2013 at 6:47 pm

Remember when we were all like, ‘how many DHs do the Mariners need?!’

Ugh, I miss being able to make fun of every other team in baseball.

  6. Jerkface March 24th, 2013 at 6:49 pm

They aren’t carrying Rivera, Francisco, Boesch, and Wells. So 1 of those first 2 has to go. Please please please carry Mustelier.

  7. Shame Spencer March 24th, 2013 at 6:51 pm

    @BobKlap 8m

#Yankees finalizing $ on Wells deal. Of $42 million owed through ’14, told Yanks will pay only single digits (in millions) per year.

So we’re still paying in 2014.

No worries guys! We don’t need Cano now that we have the biggest and hairiest of monsters.

  8. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 6:51 pm

    And we’re getting Vernon Wells because……. ?

    And we’re leaving Mustelier behind because…… ?

  9. Chip March 24th, 2013 at 6:53 pm

    Face -

My guess of guys not on the 40 who will make the team:

    Nix
    Francisco
    Nuno
    Wells
    Mustelier

Tex, Cabral, Banuelos and Granderson can all go on the 60

  10. Shame Spencer March 24th, 2013 at 6:53 pm

Vernin Wells is NAWT Maw-No, ok. Dis will not fly with me, ok. I WANT MAW-NO!!!

    —–
I will go with Mustazilla and Boesch, I want to see if Boesch’s down year is correctable mechanic wise. Boesch is LH to boot and fairly young.

  13. Jerkface March 24th, 2013 at 6:57 pm

They really shouldn’t put Banuelos on the 60 day DL. They will lose a year of service time.

  14. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 6:59 pm

The Yankees should really look into Julio Franco.

And Satchel Paige wants to come out of retirement.

The bodies are still warm on a few guys who played in the 40s that died recently, maybe HAL can negotiate a Walking Dead tie in to help boost revenue.

  16. Cashmoney March 24th, 2013 at 7:00 pm

If it’s a choice btw Francisco or Rivera, I will flip a coin… heads Rivera, that’s pretty much it to me.

I agree, but they are running out of ways to create spots.

They can dump Eppley, but after that you’re talking about cutting DFA’ing a player who might be useful like Adams, Joseph, Almonte, Mesa, or Rondon.

Of course the best option in my eyes would be to cut Chris Stewart and just use Cervelli and Romine, but that ain’t happening.

Edgar Renteria just did – too bad, we could use a short stop to open the season.

  23. Eric in the ATL March 24th, 2013 at 7:06 pm

I’d go with Musty at 3B, Youk at 1B, and a platoon of Wells and Boesch in LF. No need for Rivera or Francisco, tho we could use a backup at first. Maybe there will be some more scraps in the coming days. Gaby Sanchez is a possibility.

  24. blake March 24th, 2013 at 7:07 pm

@Walkoffwin: The Angels will pay $32 million of the $42 million owed to Vernon Wells.

5 million AAV to Vernon Wells

  25. Chip March 24th, 2013 at 7:07 pm

Interesting take by Eric Byrnes (dear lord did I just type that) When you figure that the Angels were considering releasing him and eating all $42 million the fact that they got the Yankees to pick up $10 has to be considered a victory for Los Angeles.

  26. blake March 24th, 2013 at 7:08 pm

    Heels almost out of gas

  27. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 7:08 pm

Looks to me as though KU is 3-4 inches taller all over the floor, and nearly as quick as the Heel’s little guys. Doomsday is here for the ACC.

  31. Chip March 24th, 2013 at 7:08 pm

$82.5 million committed to the four players who will open on the DL (Jeter, Tex, Alex, Curtis) that’s more than the total payrolls of 12 teams in baseball.

  32. blake March 24th, 2013 at 7:09 pm

How can they justify paying 5 million a year for Wells?

  33. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 7:10 pm

I saw this coming the entire first half…..Kansas played as bad as they could possibly play in the first half and it was still single digits…..they are just a bigger and better team….just was inevitable unfortunately ….was hoping it’d last the whole game though

  35. David in Cal March 24th, 2013 at 7:11 pm

I don’t like the Wells deal, for reasons others have spelled out. If the Yanks do pay $10 million of his remaining salary, I sure hope the player traded is someone I never heard of. A real prospect + $10 million is too much.

I’m afraid that signing Wells means that Musty won’t make the team. If so, I’ll be very disappointed. I think Musty is a better hitter than Wells now and surely will be a better hitter next year, in the second year of Wells’s contract. And, Musty offers the flexibility of playing both outfield and 3B.

How can they preach this budget crap all winter…,pass on numerous players that could hel them and then give 10 million to Vernon wells

  42. Jerkface March 24th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

  47. ac1 March 24th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

    13 million?

Yankees need a GM that knows how to get a deal that actually works for us.

That is just outrageous and i bet we gave up something too. Angels are popping the champagne over this one.

  48. Tar March 24th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

“I’m proud of them for getting this far to be honest…”

Yeah me too. I was hoping for a better game from them today, but no complaints at all on the year they had.

  49. blake March 24th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

26 million for Ichiro and wells for 2013 and 2014….that nearly half what Swisher’s entire contract was

  50. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

Maybe the Gritster is screwed up again ?

  51. blake March 24th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

This is incredible….they could have had Hairston with money left over

  52. tucker March 24th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

One thing that doesn’t make senSe in this trade is limiting roster flexibility. If Rivera, Francisco or Boesch struggled — no problem. Just cut them. If you trade for Wells, he may give you comparable production to those three players, but they are stuck with him and his salary for two years.

  53. blake March 24th, 2013 at 7:23 pm

I hope LA sent a prospect over

  54. Carlo March 24th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

Cashman is said to be interested in Hairston. PJ Hairston.

  55. Tar March 24th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

26 million for Ichiro and wells for 2013 and 2014

They could have had a catcher (that their pitching staff loves) for 2 years, plus 9 mil left over. SMH

  56. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

    FWIS it’s incomprehensible.

    A total non-sequitur.

    Does not compute.

  57. blake March 24th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

PJ Hairston might could outhit Vernon wells

  58. Jerkface March 24th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

    @ihateprospects 2m

so basically for the cost of Vernon Wells and Ichiro, the Yankees could have had Nate Schieholtz, Scott Hairston, and Russell Martin

  59. Eric in the ATL March 24th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

Please tell me it’s not $13M!

  60. blake March 24th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

Maybe we will find out LA sent something with him….otherwise I just can’t see how they’d take that much money on

  61. Tar March 24th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

“PJ Hairston might could outhit Vernon wells”

Yeah but Wells is a good “clubhouse guy”.

  62. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 7:28 pm

Maybe their is a bigger trade coming that involves GGBG ?????

Even if that were somehow true why not just use Ichiro there.

There has to be more to this. Doesn’t there ?

  63. RhapsodyInBlue March 24th, 2013 at 7:28 pm

Roy Williams did a great job with this group, without size in the middle they’re limited in this tournament.

They have a decent big man coming in next season. I hope everyone hangs around for another year.

  64. Eric in the ATL March 24th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

$13M??? That can’t be accurate! If so, Cashman got fleeced!

  65. Mike in Harrisburg March 24th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

You know at the very least I was looking forward to the prospect of watching some young rookies try to make an impression this year. It happens so rarely with Yankee teams. Instead it’s the death rattles of one more mediocre veteran’s career. Not sure the last time I was this nonplussed going into a season. I think that goes for a lot of the fanbase too.

  66. tucker March 24th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

For that much money, Trumbo needs to be riding shotgun on the trip fromAZ to Tampa.

  67. RadioKev March 24th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

  69. ac1 March 24th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

For 13m, we better be getting something, not giving something up.

  70. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

Maybe they missed a decimal place and it is .65 million per year ?

  71. Tar March 24th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

“I hope everyone hangs around for another year.”

Yeah they all need at least another year. But I can’t say I would blame any of them for chasing the NBA money. But if they all stick around, they will be a force.

  72. MG March 24th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

If these rumors are correct, what would Wells need to produce to justify the $6.5M per year?

Swish got $14M per year and he generally hits .250-.270, 25 HR and knocks in about 80-90 RBI, for half of that money would .250-.260, 15-20 HR and 65-70 RBI be about right?

I’m not praising any of this, just using $ as a means of comparison.

  73. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Since the Yankees are into bad contracts and aging players now maybe they try and get Barry Zito ?

  74. ac1 March 24th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Its amazing how other teams find ways out of their bad contracts and we not only cannot do the same, we take others bad ones…

  75. Jerkface March 24th, 2013 at 7:38 pm

Vernon Wells, as a free agent this offseason, would not have garnered a major league contract. Yet in a trade the Yankees are valuing him at 2/13? If true, indefensible.

  76. Bronx Jeers March 24th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

  77. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

When Wells was finally traded to the Halos the partying in Toronto went on for weeks.

It was considered a miracle much like what happened at Lourdes.

    So now we’ll take him.

  78. Carlo March 24th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

Net net a good season for Carolina given the youth of the team. They have a solid recruiting class coming in and some firepower coming back with Bullock and Hairston. McAdoo may gopro, would be an awful mistake if he does since he struggles playing against taller defenders, but he may go anyway. Worse decisions have been made.

As for the catastrophe that is the yankees, does anyone else find it amusing that in the same thread, we may be paying vernon wells $6.5 mm a year and our starting shortstop is throwing short hops to first base……this is a major league team…..and our first baseman is largely inexperienced / inept defensively. You can’t make this stuff up. If the 6.5 mm is accurate, its obvious cashman was worried we had too much $ on the DL for opening day so he felt the need to pay more to inflate our salary on the field number.

  79. ac1 March 24th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

  97. Cashmoney March 24th, 2013 at 7:49 pm

not so secretly, I am really hoping someone would kidnap the ‘little nerd’. Don’t hurt him, let him wear spiderman suit and watch WB cartoons in a confine space for a few years.

  98. nyrussintampa March 24th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

this is funny… suzuki at 13 mil was 2 much this can’t even be possible.this team is very sad …cashman is horrible

    I say we scrap 189.

Get a new owner, GM, and Manager.

    pkyankfan69 March 24th, 2013 at 7:46 pm
$13 M better not be true… If it is… FIRE CASHMAN

    Agreed,
Today for the first time I have come to the conclusion that Cashman must go. This move and the past many moved gives me little hope for this year and beyond.
Play the few young guys lets see what the have and we can take pride in.

Face……I view this as a borderline desperate roll the dice type of move.. Someone brought up Andruw Jones, and this might work out for the 2013 season. The only plan I see the Front Office moving on is patchwork lineup- roster in order to clear the decks by 2015…..Yanks are being groomed for selling
    ———————-
Pat M, I understand your point about getting ready for a sale but as a businessman it makes no sense to me-I’ve always been taught (and observed) that the best way to sell your business is to make it look as good as possible, not let the foundation crumble in the final stages.

I agree about some sort of desperation here but some of the guys they’ve brought in (Rivera, Francisco) have hit the ball pretty well this spring, do they just think that Wells has miraculously turned back the clock (he’s hit very well this spring) and will give them production?

  104. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 7:52 pm

    Blake-

Maybe they threw in a year’s supply of canned dog food.

  105. Bronx Jeers March 24th, 2013 at 7:53 pm

I thought everyone liked Maryanne more than Ginger.

I tell you what though…I’d rather watch Gilligans Island than see Vernon Wells play baseball.

  106. Doreen March 24th, 2013 at 7:53 pm

Pat, what would someone be buying? No one will want to watch this team.

There I’ll be a skeleton crew left.

I guess they made their on and only offer to Cano so hey can say they are still willing to spend money and it is not their fult the offer was not accepted, like with Martin last spring.

I have read this blog almost everyday since 2007 and I never post..this is the worst move i have ever saw the yankees make,,Thats honest …This team is being sold within 2 years..

  108. RadioKev March 24th, 2013 at 7:55 pm

    Buster Olney ?@Buster_ESPN 3m
About NYY payroll: WBC is responsible for paying Teixeira — not the NYY — while he’s on the DL, given timing of injury, or about $7m-$8m.

    I feel so much better

Interesting….these many odd moves recently make me think and possibly wish this true.

  110. waka flocka March 24th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

Ichiro, Youkilis, and Wells are all making around $24MM this year. this has been the worst offseason the Yankees have had in my lifetime.

  111. blake March 24th, 2013 at 7:58 pm

Maybe Arod will surprisingly be the PTBNL

  112. MTU March 24th, 2013 at 7:58 pm

In a paralell Universe this move makes perfect sense.

In that Universe, Wells is still a stud and the Yankees got a steal.

    In this one …….. ?

  113. waka flocka March 24th, 2013 at 7:59 pm

and this is the same regime that wouldn’t seriously persue any free agent outfielder that was looking for anything north of one year and a salary over $2-3MM. the jokes write themselves.

  114. ac1 March 24th, 2013 at 7:59 pm

Dont lump ichiro and youk with wells…
