Would not be surprised to see the Yankees immediately turn around and waive Otero to see if he clears. Not sure how there is room for him on the 40-man otherwise. Here is the announcement from the Yankees.

The New York Yankees today announced they have claimed right-handed pitcher Dan Otero off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.

Otero, 28, made his Major League debut with the World Series-champion Giants in 2012. A member of the team’s Opening Day roster, he posted a 5.84 ERA (12.1IP, 11R, 8ER) with no record in 12 relief appearances over three stints. He surrendered six earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched in an April 24 loss at Cincinnati, then pitched to a 1.69 ERA (10.2IP, 2ER) over his other 11 outings.

A 21st-round selection by San Francisco in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, he owns a 15-3 career minor league record with a 2.13 ERA, 234 strikeouts and just 38 walks in 236 appearances over six professional seasons (2007-12). Otero has gone 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA (7.0IP, 7ER) in eight spring training relief outings in 2013.

In a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees placed LHP Cesar Cabral on the 60-day disabled list.
