Aardsma designated for assignment

In the last week of spring training, Joe Girardi did not seem sold on David Aardsma. Now the team has designated Aardsma for assignment.

“He didn’t really fit,” Girardi said.

Make that three bullpen spots up for grabs.

Andrew Marchand is reporting that Shawn Kelley has made the team, presumably in Aardsma’s place.

Aardsma wasn’t looking very good and had to be put in the major league bullpen, so I can understand why they DFA’d him.

Asked daughters who will win WS.

    MG
I have also been annoyed by his active twitter account.
Bottom line-Aardsma was not the power pitcher this spring the team was hoping for.

Nice move by the team. It was Aardsma’s role to lose and he did just that.

the other pitcher who was recently claimed should be next, that will cover nix and overbay. For Francisco, it could be eppley next, if you have to dfa aardsma, they should dfa eppley.

Well, now, looky-see, the Yankees did something that should make some people happy! :)

Jerkface, by pre-greement, I mean they actually talked about what kind of contract he would get if he resigned, not simply, we want you back.

    Shame – who is @BattingStanceG 46s?

  12. MG March 29th, 2013 at 5:15 pm

DanBarbarisi Brennan Boesch took ground balls at first base today, took some tutelage from Teixeira. Looks like theyre prepping him to be emergency 1b.
    ————————
Mick, there is your answer, Boesch is the 25th man but they are also going to need pinch hitters more this year than in other years, particularly with the catching situation and when Nix is playing 3rd against lefties.

Boesch on the bench gives them an option to pinch hit one of them late in the game when there is a pitching change.

  13. mick March 29th, 2013 at 5:15 pm

he impersonates every batter thats ever played…google him on you tube bating stance guy

    mick – thanks.

    MG

we saw his role today as a late inning replacement for ichiro. dont get the move.
he wont play the OF or DH against rightys . forget about him at 1st.
he might pinch hit for francisco but not nix as there is no BUIF.

  16. mick March 29th, 2013 at 5:19 pm

do you want me to send you a good batting stance guy doreen, he’s hilarious…

Aardsma joins the list of relief pitchers that the Yanks pay to rehab their arms and leave.

if they pinch hit for Nix they move Youk to 3rd and put either Overbay or Boesch at 1st for an inning or two.

Mustelier is hurt, who else would you put in that spot? They obviously don’t need both Francisco and Neal/Mesa so who else?

  19. mick March 29th, 2013 at 5:21 pm

ok on the catchers MG…that i can see.

  20. mick March 29th, 2013 at 5:23 pm

it’s all short term anyway-when Jeter is activated someone has to go, it will either be Francisco or Boesch because they need Nix as a backup guy for 2nd and 3rd since Nunez won’t play there.

  23. mick March 29th, 2013 at 5:27 pm

    jobas tweetage is down.

  24. mick March 29th, 2013 at 5:29 pm

so its eppley, miller, nuno and spence for 2 spots..
    take eppley and spence.

The most overlooked positive thing this spring (because all of us take it for granted) is that the three key pitchers over 35 (Andy, Mo and Kuroda) are all throwing the ball great.

That certainly wasn’t a given before the start of spring training because of Mo’s injury last year and Andy pitching his 1st full season since 2010.

Each of them needs to be good all or most of the season for the Yankees to have a good year and if they continue to throw like this they’ll be a tough team once again.

  26. Doreen March 29th, 2013 at 5:30 pm

mick – I’ve seen batting stance guy. Since the tweet was talking about who was gonna win the WS, I didn’t put it together that it was is twitter name.

    Thanks, though.

I had high hopes for Aardsma, and I’m sure the Yankees did as well. It’s probably a good bet that within a few months he’ll catch on with someone else and be further along in his rehab and be really good.

  27. mick March 29th, 2013 at 5:30 pm

But then what would people complain about?

  28. Jerkface March 29th, 2013 at 5:31 pm

I like all 3 of those guys, but my most looked forward to pitcher this year is still Hughes. He was my favorite pitching prospect and this may be his final year, I want to see him throw a good one.

  29. mick March 29th, 2013 at 5:33 pm

What if Hughes has a stinker or is hurt this year?
Do we bring him back at a decent contract or would he have value to other teams?

  30. austinmac March 29th, 2013 at 5:33 pm

It has been something like 18 months since Aardsma’s surgery. He may not get his old velocity back. I don’t think he will.

  31. Rich in NJ March 29th, 2013 at 5:33 pm

“It’s fashionable to bash the Yankees right now but the pitching is so solid that they are going to be in the hunt for the division and playoffs.”

    They should make the playoffs.

  32. Rich in NJ March 29th, 2013 at 5:35 pm

They paid Aardsma next to nothing. So it was a very low cost gamble. Sorry it didn’t work, but no big deal.

  33. MG March 29th, 2013 at 5:36 pm

I really don’t think this team is all that bad and once the injured regulars get back (I think Teix will get back sooner than most of you think, I don’t think the injury was nearly as bad as Bautista’s and Jeter may miss a couple of weeks but will be OK) they will have a stronger bench than last season.

At the end of the day, they replaced Swish with Ichiro and replaced Martin with a couple of fringe catchers.

Gardner looks like he’s ready to be a regular so that’s a plus and Nunez is also playing much better defense than last season.

That’s my take, time will tell who is right and who is wrong…
