Overbay officially makes the team

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 29, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

From the guys covering the team down in D.C., Lyle Overbay was just told that he has made the Yankees Opening Day roster. Overbay will be introduced at Yankee Stadium on Monday, less than a week after signing with the Yankees.

Also, Jayson Nix, Ben Francisco and Shawn Kelley have made the team.

By my count, that leaves two bullpen spots — could the Aardsma DFA open a spot for Vidal Nuno? — and one bench spot. The open bench spot will, presumably, go to Brennan Boesch, who took ground balls at first base today.

Who else is getting DFA’d for Nix and Nuno? Assuming Francisco takes Aardsma’s spot.

There will probably be a lot of roster turnover this season.

I hope mustelier gets a shot and soon because I don’t like having Nix as the primary platooner at third. They can DFA Fracisco and go with Musty as the 5th OFer and 3B platoon guy.

Girardi likes Nix too much. He just doesn’t hit enough to play a corner, infield or outfield.

I like Nix as a versatile backup, just not in the role he is assuming for the Yankees.

I think its a waste to go with 5 OFers. Especially Francisco and Boesch. Boesch gives you a lefty option to replace Wells with, Francisco just brings more of the same. And you’re still wasting a 40 man spot for it.

I wish they’d just put their faith in Mustelier.

    Overbay takes Aardsma’s spot

    My guesses are

    Francisco takes Eppley’s spot
    Nix for Mesa?

Glad to see Adams staying with the organization.

Francisco will be the dh against lefty until jeter plays. Adam Warren/Marshall will rotate for the long relief job until hughes is activated. they could go initially with 11 pitchers and take joseph for infield depth.

With Mustelier hurt there aren’t any other options.

I was making a more general point, Chip.

I know, but I don’t really care if my back up infielder hits – just want him to field. Nix kind of reminds me of Miguel Cairo and Luis Sojo – if someone gets hurt and has to miss several games I don’t want him playing for multiple games, but if you need someone to come in late – I would rather have Nix than Nunez.

On the 3rd day of Overbay my true love gave to me……oh for four with 2 K’s.

Not since Phil Hughes threw a couple of mediocre change ups to win a starting job in that sham of a competition 3 years ago has anybody done less to win a job than Overbay.

I guess he’ll have to really outhit Hafner to keep his spot once Tex returns.

Torre played Cairo at 1B. That was nuts.

    I’m pro-Nunez.

    Chip,

The problem with that is right now Nix isn’t just playing late innings or in a pinch, he is the starting 3Bman vs lefties.

  15. Doreen March 29th, 2013 at 6:00 pm

Better for Nuno to start, I think.

    Chip
Adams might make a nice story.
I hope he does find way to contribute to the Yankees sometime this season, unless that occurs as a result of multiple injuries to all-star players/starters.

If not for his injury, he might have made the team ahead of Nix or someone else that is currently on the roster.

  17. Doreen March 29th, 2013 at 6:00 pm

Nuno, Neal, Mesa and Johnson to AAA, it looks like, BTW.

  18. Jerkface March 29th, 2013 at 6:01 pm

    @McCulloughSL 2s

Nuno is headed to minor-league camp. Good day to be Adam Warren and/or Cody Eppley, I suppose.

Nuno needs to make his case to be the 6th or 7th man in the rotation.

  19. Jerkface March 29th, 2013 at 6:04 pm

In 2 weeks, with Tex still uncertain, I’d like to see this:

    1B – Youk / Overbay
    2B – Cano / Nix
    SS – Nunez / Nix
    3B – Mustelier / Nix
    LF – Wells / Mustelier
    CF – Gardner
    RF – Ichiro / Mustelier
    DH – Hafner / Boesch
    C – Cervelli / Stewart

Youk, Cano, Nunez, Wells, Gardner, Ichiro, Hafner, Cervelli, Stewart, Mustelier, Nix, Boesch, Overbay

12 pitchers (CC/Andy/Kuroda/Phelps/Hughes – Mo/Drob/Joba/Kelley/Logan/Rapada/Warren) Phelps or Nova to AAA to stay stretched out.

  20. MG March 29th, 2013 at 6:04 pm

I’m glad they sent Nuno down to start, putting him in the ‘pen as the second lefty or long guy is a waste of time and resources.

He also struggled the two times I saw him relieve, his stuff and command might work much better as a starter.
