Yankees turn to regulars for next-to-last exhibition

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 29, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As far as I know, Sweeny Murti is the only Yankees reporter attempting to cover both ends of these final back-to-back exhibition games. I flew to New York this morning, just got to my apartment less than an hour ago, and I’ll be at West Point tomorrow. For today, though, I’m a bit of a distant observer.

Today’s Yankees lineup — against right-hander Jordan Zimmerman — may very well be the regular Yankees lineup you’ll see against righties the first few weeks of the regular season. How this lineup looks probably depends on your expectations for Hafner and Wells.

Brett Gardner CF
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Robinson Cano 2B
Kevin Youkilis 3B
Travis Hafner DH
Vernon Wells LF
Lyle Overbay 1B
Eduardo Nunez SS
Chris Stewart C

Wow, five of those guys should be retired by now.

  6. Tar March 29th, 2013 at 11:49 am

It’s different having a Yankee team with little or no expectations. Something tells me the veterans may thrive being the under-dog. It’s not a strategy I would have implemented, but its what we have. Go Yankees

  7. Rich in NJ March 29th, 2013 at 11:49 am

Youk is the new acquisition who I most want to see succeed this season. As I said yesterday, I’m skeptical that he can do it, but a 120-ish OPS+ would be great.

  8. blake March 29th, 2013 at 11:50 am

228 million dollar payroll and the lineup contains Lyle Overbay, Eduardo Nunez, Chris Stewart, Travis Hafner, and Vernon Wells……has to be the least efficient use of payroll in sports history.

  9. Chad Jennings March 29th, 2013 at 11:53 am

As some of you probably guessed, the person posting as Bret The Hitman late last night has the same IP address as another frequent poster here. At one point, he was even having a conversation with himself and spelling his own name wrong.

Whether they’ve always been one and the same, I have no idea. Doesn’t really matter. I’m not banning anyone over it, just making people aware. The internet’s a weird place sometimes.

Looking to boost offense in midseason and replace free-agent-to-be Curtis Granderson long term, the Yankees package Jose Ramirez and Mason Williams to the Dodgers for Andre Ethier, available because prospect Yasiel Puig is ready.

    http://bit.ly/16lqi20

Lord help is if they do something like this
    __

No one the Yankees are this stupid…right?

  11. Rich in NJ March 29th, 2013 at 11:54 am

    Sorry, NO WAY

(I need to calm down. Since it’s Sherman, I can’t dismiss it like George King.)

  12. DONNYBROOK March 29th, 2013 at 11:56 am

Just the thought of Overbay being a “regular” sends shivers down my spine. All 3 of these guys are the kind of players you acquire at the deadline to ensure depth during a pennant run. Reminds me of how they have Butchered the Cadillac. NO WAY Elvis would be caught dead inna Caddy today.

  13. Rich in NJ March 29th, 2013 at 11:59 am

Overbay doesn’t bother me because unlike Wells, he is cheap and can be sent packing at any time. He’s getting a ML tryout, and since he’s better than Rivera and they need some defense at 1B unless they had a in his prime Giambi-like masher, they have nothing to lose by giving him a chance to fail.

Guys . .we have to let these move play out ! ,,,,, Same was said last year about Ibanez , Chavez , Andrew Jones . . . all proved to be pretty good moves .

  17. blake March 29th, 2013 at 12:01 pm

Sherman was just speculating…..but as I said this morning he does seem to have a grip on the pulse of what the Yankees are thinking more than most……worries me because something he’s heard or inferred made that trade idea pop in his head…….

  18. DONNYBROOK March 29th, 2013 at 12:02 pm

The “nothing to lose” philosopy can be applied to Any player. This is the Yankees, Not some 5 and Dime operation. Well, it used to be.

  19. blake March 29th, 2013 at 12:02 pm

If the Yankees are floundering this summer they need to do the opposite of trading prospects for Ethier…..they need to trade what they have for prospects themselves.

  20. Warning Track Power March 29th, 2013 at 12:03 pm

    Question for everybody here?
How many of you decided to take Monday off from work in order to watch
Opening Day in person or on TV??

    I did.

  21. Duh Innings II March 29th, 2013 at 12:03 pm

    Here’s my prediction:

Jeter will return no later than May 1, Granderson May 16.

Teixiera will return no later than August 1 if he returns and if he’s out for the year up to two weeks before the trading deadline the Yanks will trade for either a 1B or a bat who plays wherever. If the bat is not a 1B, Youkilis will be the 1B with Overbay as his backup. If the Yanks get a 1B, they’ll DFA Overbay.

The Yankees should make a decision on Teixiera no later than 7/17 so they have no less two weeks to get a 1B or a bat if they don’t get one on or before 7/17. You can’t wait too long to know the score.

Also, how ’bout the Yanks buy Hafner a friggin’ first base glove and play some first in workouts? If you are a DH there is NO EXCUSE for you to not work on playing a position as all you do during a game is bat and sit on your ass, and if you have an 0 for 4 with two strikeouts, a lineout, and a foul out, you didn’t even run (ditto if you did that and smacked a homerun.)

I need to go back and read that exchange for clues. It didn’t quite read like something Bret would write, unless of course he was intoxicated.

  24. blake March 29th, 2013 at 12:04 pm

The Yankees need to avoid trying to scrape together something just to have a change to squeeze into a playoff spot if its not working……they need to take a good hard look at themselves in June and see what they are and if they have a legit chance to win a title……if they don’t then they need to act in whats best for the future……that doesn’t mean punt the season…..if means being realistic.

  25. DONNYBROOK March 29th, 2013 at 12:04 pm

Why go after Ethier? We got Wells. This kinda conga line attempt at catching lightening inna bottle, gets you a team loaded with DEADWOOD.

  26. DONNYBROOK March 29th, 2013 at 12:07 pm

Hal and Levine had the Entire offseason to look at this team. Unfortunately, these guys are Mr Magoo 2013.

“Management knows more about the game and the players available and the options for the team.”

If you want to think that fine, but to those who don’t, all one has to do is compare what TB gets out of their payroll and farm system to what the Yankees have gotten out of theirs.

If the Yankees were as well-run as TB, it would be awesome.

  33. RadioKev March 29th, 2013 at 12:15 pm

Can I ask you something? Since 2009, let’s compare how many WS titles Tampa has in relation to NY Yankees?
    THANK YOU!

I think the score is 1-0, in favor of the Yankees.
So despite all the publicity the Tampa farm system gets, those players have not been good enough to win a WS Title

No Ethier, he cannot play defense and is a liability against lefties. A guy who wallops righties only and can play the outfield (poorly) is an ok player to have on your team. It is not an ok player to trade top prospects for and assume 17 million per year contract on.

  40. RadioKev March 29th, 2013 at 12:19 pm

This place can be so depressing.
Let’s see-As soon as the leadoff hitter gets on base for the Sox on Monday, there will be a number of people here that will declare the season over.
Isn’t that just a little dramatic?

So the Yankees might not have signed the players some here desired, but there are so many factors that go into a decision for a player to sign with any team.
There are “fans” here that are still upset the Yankees did not acquire Cliff Lee years ago?
Newsflash-Cliff Lee had no desire to pitch for the Yankees. How could Cash or management do anything about that situation?

Who chose to sign a contract to play in that crappy stadium in that crappy location?

TB does a good job within their payroll “limitations”, but you also have to consider the law of diminishing returns. You also can’t consider Granderson and Teixeira the being out the fault of Cashman. Granderson was just bad luck, and Teixeira is having a somewhat early drop in performance and durability. Those guys aren’t “old”, both are 32. And everyone must agree that there was no way they could not keep Jeter. Arod was replaced by Youkilis who may outperform him.

  69. Jerkface March 29th, 2013 at 12:45 pm

Verlanders’ extension is essentially 5 years @ 28 million per year with a vesting option for 22 million. His current contract still has 2 years on it @ 20 million per year.

  70. jeffc_76 March 29th, 2013 at 12:45 pm

As bad as that lineup is, and as bad as the off-season has gone with all the injuries and willful downgrades to a team that wasn’t even that good to begin with….I think the 2 things that will annoy me the most this year will be:
    1) Chris Stewart starting 2 or 3 out of ever 5 games
    2) Jayson Nix getting meaningful at bats…or even worse, a platoon role
I just can’t stand players who are total zeroes with the bat. The other fill-in players – Bosche, Francisco, Overbay….even Wells….aren’t bad enough to make me want to tune out as a fan. But there are going to be plenty of games that I record / fast-forward or just don’t even watch and check the box score later, when I see Stewart/Nix in the lineup….especially if the team plays .500-ish ball for the first couple months like I fear is going to happen. Sorry for the pessimism but this year’s team gives me very little to get excited about.

    Tigers are idiots.
Once again this is a contact where the player will be unable to give value for the money
    earned.

I don’t second guess why the player is taking all the money.
I am very critical of the owners who want to pay such a player all that money, with all those years.
    RIDICULOUS!

Verlander is 30 yrs of age
Are you telling me he’s the next Nolan Ryan? Able to throw fastballs in the mid 90′s at the age of 35-38???

  73. djsunyc March 29th, 2013 at 12:52 pm

no pitcher should ever get an 8 year deal…especially a 30 year old one. amazing.

  74. Rich in NJ March 29th, 2013 at 12:52 pm

“Who chose to sign a contract to play in that crappy stadium in that crappy location?”

Due to the anti-trust exemption, they can’t start a team down the street from YS, run it better, and then rely on the principles of competition to take away market share from the Yankees.

Similarly, there are a limited number of big markets, which are…taken.

“TB does a good job within their payroll “limitations”, but you also have to consider the law of diminishing returns. Arod was replaced by Youkilis who may outperform him.”

No, Granderson was an example of trading the future for the present, and specifically, the present of a player whose stats were declining, and already pulling the ball to RF more according to his spray charts in his last season with the Tigers.

This at a time when the Yankees’ core was still at a point at which it would have been possible to more easily withstand a young player overcoming a learning curve, and start getting the team younger and cheaper to offset the contracts of Jeter and A-Rod, for example.

Holliday, a better hitter, would have been available a year later.

    1) Chad banned BreT’s account (or so we were told)
    2) Chad suggests I hacked BreT’s banned account
    3) Chad says he won’t ban me for it

I guess if Chad did ban me for it somebody could easily just hack my banned account and bring me back to life. Or I could just hack my own banned account and post as myself whenever I felt like it. But then there would be no need to post through any account other than my banned one in the first place.

But I guess the real question everyone is burning to know is, is BreT a wife beater, a harmless trouble maker, both?

  76. Tabbert March 29th, 2013 at 1:01 pm

Tex expects to be back by may 1?! Talk about optimistic.

  77. jacksquat March 29th, 2013 at 1:03 pm

The Granderson trade is irrelevant. The point is that he is injured and it hurts the lineup. He is injured because he got hit by a pitch. AJax could have just as easily been hit by a pitch. It’s not because Granderson is old, with the team being “old” being the reason given the lineup is in the state it is in.

I know you think I “love” Cashman and will say anything to defend him, but be reasonable and just look at the situation objectively. Are Granderson and Teixeira “old”? No, they are median age. Could the team have just let Jeter go? Yeah, right. Did Cashman want to resign Arod to this awful contract? No, he said if he opted out he would not be resigned, the Arod went over his head. Criticize Granderson/AJax or Montero/Pineda, but the above is true.

You brought it up. The issue being discussed isn’t only about 2013.

“I know you think I “love” Cashman and will say anything to defend him, but be reasonable and just look at the situation objectively. Are Granderson and Teixeira “old”? No, they are median age. Not all players age at the same rate, so you look at recent performance trends and their swings (Tex’s LH one, in this case) to get a better read on how they are likely to age.

AJack is important because he would have offered cost savings at a time when they were likely to need that.

Squat, I have said many times (you usually only seem to focus on the criticisms) that trading for A-Rod and recommending against extending A-Rod were probably Cashman’s two best moves.

The other night during the game Joe was doing his routing in-game interview on YES.
Joe said one guy might play 3 our of 5 games, while the other plays 2 out of 5.
Joe also said is Cerby or Stewie are hot, then he will go with the hot hand and run the guy out there everyday.
Make no mistake, this is a platoon situation.
Come next year hopefully Romine is ready for a promotion. If not him, then maybe someone else down in the minors.
As it stands right now, both Cervy and Stewie have proven their defense is good enough to be on a major league roster.
Cervy has improved tremendously since last year. His throwing this Spring can be described as such.
I think C.C. & Andy enjoy throwing to Stewie. So since they are veterans, I think Girardi would be inclined to give those 2 what they want behind the dish

Jonathan Gray continues to pitch well for OK. Tis a shame as the Yanks drafted him a few years ago. There are going to be a bunch of lefties for Yanks to choose from. I still like Marco Gonzales from Gonazaga. Given what Gil Patterson told Josh Norris, Gonzales has that command and breaking pitches, two things Patterson identified as needed for pitching in the majors. Marco could go quickly once in the minors.

    question:

    —————

Every computer/device as an IP address.

  172. blake March 29th, 2013 at 2:02 pm

“chad mentioned the usage of the same ip address, what was he referring to?”

if it’s the same IP then it’s either the same computer or someone is hacking into the one computer to make it look like it’s coming from that computer.

  177. FiretheUMPIRE March 29th, 2013 at 2:04 pm

No question is a dumb question Mick. That’s what my teachers always told me. Do you think they were lying?

  178. Chad Jennings March 29th, 2013 at 2:05 pm

Not suggesting anyone hacked anything. Just saying two people posted from the same IP address last night, and one of those was a screen name that was previously banned here. Take that for what it’s worth.

  179. Jerkface March 29th, 2013 at 2:06 pm

chad mentioned the usage of the same ip address, what was he referring to?

Internet providers generally provide 1 IP address per household. You connect your cable modem or DSL or uverse or whatever to a router. Each computer in the house then uses the same IP address out ‘on the internet’. An IP address is a unique identifier for each user, though with commercial internet you are assigned a random one which may change (but its still unique at the time of using it).

Bret and FiretheUmp having the same IP addresss last night means both were posting from the same place.

  180. FiretheUMPIRE March 29th, 2013 at 2:06 pm

Tells us nothing. Where is Trisha?

  181. Jerkface March 29th, 2013 at 2:07 pm

And I’m assuming that LOHUD bans by IP address, which is why some people get around it by using proxies or posting from somewhere else.

  182. mick March 29th, 2013 at 2:08 pm

thank you chad, that sheds a light on things.

  183. Carly March 29th, 2013 at 2:08 pm

oh well, seems all the topic is this bret guy or what is the technical process of how david adams was released and/or could become a free agent, guess i will go take my ball to pp or somewhere else

  184. FiretheUMPIRE March 29th, 2013 at 2:09 pm

That’s why Chad should immediately ban my IP address. I’m willing to jump on a (virtual) grenade for BreT.
