All things considered, I like this lineup.

  2. ac1 April 1st, 2013 at 9:21 am

Yankees lineup 4/1 vs BOS: Gardner 8, Nunez 6, Cano 4, Youkilis 3, Wells 7, Francisco DH, Ichiro 9, Nix 5, Cervelli 2, Sabathia 1
    ___

    WOW.

He went with Cervelli and with Nunez 2nd.
Girardi is impressing me early on.
My only change would have been Ichiro 3rd and Cano 4th. Get all the speed together at the top.

  3. blake April 1st, 2013 at 9:22 am

Nobody is gonna protect Cano really but Youk is their best shot at it especially vs LHP…..I like this lineup for what they have….the fact that Cervelli is starting today suggests that they view him as the primary also and that’s good

  4. Mike Ri April 1st, 2013 at 9:22 am

?Mike – Beast is a good word to use.?

    Was that a looks dig?

As I have said, Youk is my guy this year. Don?t let me down, dude.

    —–
LOL .. not a dig at all !! .. . .You is my guy as well !!!

  5. astrocityfan April 1st, 2013 at 9:22 am

lol i bet Joe broke out in hives thinking about batting three lefties at the top of the order. but what its worth i kinda like it too. Go Yanks! I am incredibly irratated that meetings will keep me from following this on MLBTV though. sigh

  6. Ys Guy April 1st, 2013 at 9:25 am

    OPENING DAY!!!!

    i like nunez there!

    Let’s Go Yankees!

  7. CountryClub April 1st, 2013 at 9:25 am

    My prediciton for the year:

Yanks will win 90+ games and will be fighting for the division/WC as of Sept 1st.

  8. Zach S April 1st, 2013 at 9:25 am

    Ben Francisco DH

  9. CountryClub April 1st, 2013 at 9:26 am

Mark Feinsand ?@FeinsandNYDN 2m Yankee locker news: Robertson is moved to Soriano’s old spot, right next to Mo. Joba moved away from the starters, into D-Rob’s old spot.

  10. MTU April 1st, 2013 at 9:26 am

Time to walk the little Mopheads.

    later.

  11. PacoDooley April 1st, 2013 at 9:26 am

Who guessed this would be the opening day lineup? I could have put together a hundred permutations and wouldn’t have gotten this one, even if I had done the lineup after the Wells trade. Wouldn’t have guessed that Youk would open the season at 1B, nor that Nunez would be batting near the top of the order.

  12. blake April 1st, 2013 at 9:30 am

Real interested to see how CC looks cause he hasn’t looked very sharp when I’ve seen him at all

  13. CountryClub April 1st, 2013 at 9:34 am

Real interested to see how CC looks cause he hasn’t looked very sharp when I’ve seen him at all

    ————-

Yeah, I’m not expecting a great game from him today. And Lester has looked good through spring. I expect those two things will flip flop as the year goes along, but I dont have high expectaions for today. Hopefully I get surprised!

  14. Shame Spencer April 1st, 2013 at 9:34 am

Keep Jobber as far away from the other starters as possible!!

blake – Agreed but CC’s always taken a little more time to get going and it’s just hard to worry about him. Even when he doesn’t look sharp he usually keeps the team in it. I expect him to be so-so today.. I think we’ll see that sharp command return in a few more starts.

  15. Tabbert April 1st, 2013 at 9:34 am

Its weird that the Yankees are the underdog team that will be playing with a chip on their shoulder this season. It’s going to be a sweet feeling when Our boys prove everyone wrong, and make it back to the postseason.

  16. blake April 1st, 2013 at 9:34 am

@Joelsherman1: Girardi: “We expect to win. There may be different faces in the clubhouse, but the expectation is still to win” #Yankees

  17. blake April 1st, 2013 at 9:35 am

Yea CC usually does take some time to hit stride

  18. jacksquat April 1st, 2013 at 9:36 am

I don’t really like Ichiro hitting 7th, he’s not an rbi guy, a lot of his hits are swinging bunts and flares. However I am not opposed to the top 5, so I”m not sure where I’d like him more aside from maybe 9th.

I don’t like Nix in the lineup either. Hopefully that can be Mustelier soon but Girardi said he didn’t have a chance to make the team even if healthy…

  19. RadioKev April 1st, 2013 at 9:37 am

    Francisco has a career 101 OPS+.

  20. RadioKev April 1st, 2013 at 9:37 am

Musty ain’t coming. Jeter will eventually be back, Nix is the back up IF and Nunez backs Jeter. If there was a place for Musty, it was now.

  26. ac1 April 1st, 2013 at 9:40 am

Nix is batting something like .350 off Lester, which is why he is there.
The alternative was Overbay in the lineup vs a lefty and Youk at 3rd.
    This is better than that.

  27. Rich in NJ April 1st, 2013 at 9:40 am

Joelsherman1 Cervelli starts today but Girardi said expects “even split” with Stewart at C, said will use 1st month to judge position #Yankees

I think that probably means a chance to see if the new Cervelli is real, because we know that Stewart isn’t good.

  28. massjake April 1st, 2013 at 9:43 am

Opening Day! Finally. Best day of the year!!

  29. RadioKev April 1st, 2013 at 9:44 am

Finally, we have the scrappy lineup I always dreamed off. Now maybe we can do some crazy defensive alignments like the Rays, suicide squeeze more and all that good stuff.

  30. Mike Ri April 1st, 2013 at 9:45 am

Nix is batting something like .350 off Lester, which is why he is there.

  31. Tabbert April 1st, 2013 at 9:45 am

Watching and listening to pretty much media outlet, everyone seems to think that the Yankees are just going to lay over and die. People keep acting like Jeter, Granderson, Arod, and Tex are gone for the season. We literally could have three of those guys back by mid may. Not to mention the possible addition of Pineda at some point. You throw pineda in that rotation, and your now talking about having one of the elite rotations in all of baseball.

  32. Tar April 1st, 2013 at 9:47 am

    Trisha

    89 and the WC. Thanks

  33. jacksquat April 1st, 2013 at 9:49 am

Nix has a 1.248 OPS vs Lester in 21 ab.

Overbay has a 1.109 OPS vs Lester in 25 ab.

    Both are somewhat shocking.

Of course Jeter and Granderson have pretty good numbers vs Lester…

  34. blake April 1st, 2013 at 9:49 am

Francisco is the biggest question for me….especially at DH…. He’s worse vs LHP than RHp for his career…..I guess there aren’t a lot of other options though

  35. blake April 1st, 2013 at 9:51 am

Could have played Overbay at 1B and DHd Nix …..it’s splitting hairs though …. joe didn’t have a lot of options here

  36. Barry April 1st, 2013 at 9:51 am

“Scrappy” is code language for a lot of inadequate people trying hard. Not good.

I hate the off day tomorrow. It isn’t even here and I already hate it.

I’m trying to decide if I should change my wins guess before the first pitch….. I think I still like this team for 90-93 wins so I might just stick with my original guess of 92.

  45. Rich in NJ April 1st, 2013 at 9:59 am

This blog swings hot and cold. If, for example, Wells has a big day, the trade will have been vindicated to some. If Nunez makes an error, he will be crucified.

162 is a lot of games, no matter what happens.

  46. LGY April 1st, 2013 at 9:59 am

Is Ben Francisco really a better option than Ichiro?

And if Ben Francisco is a better option, that doesn’t speak too well to the decision to sign Ichiro for 2 years.

  47. Bronx Jeers April 1st, 2013 at 10:04 am

Musty ain’t coming. Jeter will eventually be back, Nix is the back up IF and Nunez backs Jeter. If there was a place for Musty, it was now.

    —————————-

If Mustelier continues to hit in the minors the way he always has and Nix continues to hit in the majors the way he always has then there’s no reason not to make the switch once Jeter proves he can handle playing defense regularly.

  48. Rich in NJ April 1st, 2013 at 10:05 am

Me too. But putting Ichiro 2nd instead of Nunez would put lefties in a row vs a lhp and that’s asking for too much from Girardi. It will be new ground even vs rhp. Pretty much only Youk at this point can back up Cano so can’t switch them either.

Can’t believe I’m going to miss todays game because I have a stupid conference call this afternoon.

I’m actually prettty excited to see how this lineup does against Lester today.

I just dont want to see Giradi over-mananging game 1 of 162 like is the playoffs. If he intentionally walks a batter (early in the game) like he did last year i will throw my phone into the television.

  62. randy l. April 1st, 2013 at 10:23 am

it is possible the yankees won’t suck.

from a distance, objectively, this is just another team. nothing special.

there is only one thing left and that is to play the games to put up an actual record.

this team is potentially one injury away from a .500 record.

  63. ac1 April 1st, 2013 at 10:28 am

Hope we see some bunting from Gardner/Nunez to get on in front of Cano…… Take advantage of that speed, especially Gardner who was hot 4 weeks ago and now looks less than great at the plate…

Okey dokey Yankee fans, this is your opening day 2013 Prediction chart. You have until first pitch to make changes or join in. I am so excited to see what this lineup can do. If our off-season acquisitions can perform nearly as well as they’ve shown in the majors, this could be one scary roster!!!

I am also going to post my “You’ve killed me Yankees!” prediction chart. For those of you who don’t know, on a day when I was feeling quite magnanimous, I said that in the case of a tie I would pay up each winner as if he or she were the only winner. 72. austinmac April 1st, 2013 at 10:44 am

Benny, I feel your pain. I have a deposition this afternoon. Very bad planning.

  73. Chip April 1st, 2013 at 10:44 am

I hope the Andrus contract has one impact and that is that when/if guys like Heathcott and Austin are up here the Yankees are smart enough to take care of them early and keep them off the market in their prime years.

The Yankees have given young players contracts (Jeter, Cano) but with so few good players making it to free agency it will be even more important for the Yankees to develop well, keep the players they develop and then lock them up early so that they don’t have huge budgetary woes going forward.

“I hope the Andrus contract has one impact and that is that when/if guys like Heathcott and Austin are up here the Yankees are smart enough to take care of them early and keep them off the market in their prime years.”

They will have no choice, but even being skeptical of their ability to adapt, the market conditions will likely have become so clear that the necessity of similar extensions will be obvious to every owner.

So my primary concern is still the ability/patience to develop the kids so that the extension issue will become relevant.

With the Andrus extension i think a trade for Tulo may be in the future

  96. bruceb April 1st, 2013 at 11:11 am

Good to see the optimists out in force this morning…and so they should be. It’s opening day, the sun is shining and it actually feels like spring. I picked the Yanks to win 86 games BEFORE Tex and Grandy went down. To be honest, I think the only way they will surpass that is if CC, Andy, Phil and Mo stay healthy for the whole season, and that’s not very likely. For all those on their way to the stadium (and I’m stuck at my desk), enjoy!

Man I wish, he is easily the best SS in baseball*

Worse opening day Yankee lineup I?ve ever —-

I can’t point to a few late 80?s early 90?s that were worse

    ======================================================

Those late 80′s early 90′s teams could hit, they just couldn’t pitch worth a darn! We had the two Niekro brothers, Andy Hawkins, etc…

I think that Andrus extension is going to end up looking really, really good.

    Trisha:

    83 wins please, thanks

  101. ac1 April 1st, 2013 at 11:13 am

I am glad all these teams are locking up their best players. It’s time for the Yankees to start valuing their young talent and they are going to have to because there will be no FA’s out there. Nunez should see the Andrus extension as a change to stick here as the SS of the present/future…

Time to get Adams and CoJo ready because if Cano leaves, one of them may have to step in….

    Austin/Heathcott/Williams…….

  102. astrocityfan April 1st, 2013 at 11:13 am

Trisha – i am thinking 89 wins but hoping for more. Go yanks!

  103. Ys Guy April 1st, 2013 at 11:13 am

Pre ST, I had the Yanks winning 89 games, pending what happened in camp.

Now, given the injuries plus the unfortunate omen that Arod will be at opening day but Jeter wont…

    my prediction is 86-76.

  104. ac1 April 1st, 2013 at 11:14 am

If the Yankees cant win today, I hope at least CC makes Jackie Bradley Jr look like a punk……

It’s a good deal IF he develops into an above average hitter…..I think he will only be like 31 at the end of the deal….. If his bat doesn’t progress but he stays an elite defender then it’s an over pay but still not terrible at 15 million per…

    Radio,

At the moment it’s pretty apples to oranges….Nunez hasn’t shown he can play SS at a big league level and Andrus is premier ….also Andrus is a couple years younger and a better hitter

  106. blake April 1st, 2013 at 11:17 am

The Rockies are gonna want rid of Tulos contract at some point….they need to rebuild…..
