What to make of Sabathia’s diminished fastball velocity

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Apr 02, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Asked specifically about the possible connections to offseason elbow surgery and a modified spring training scheduled, here’s what Joe Girardi had to say about CC Sabathia’s diminished fastball velocity in yesterday’s season opener.

“I think he was as ready as he’s been in the past. Spring training was a little bit longer, but he got a lot of innings and he got up to almost 100 pitches in spring training, which is normal. Sometimes, CC has been a guy that’s taken a little bit longer to get going in the past. It’s not something that I’m going to worry about after one start. I think he was ready for today.”

In each of the past four seasons with the Yankees, Sabathia has made exactly five April starts. Below are Sabathia’s game-by-game average fastball velocities for each of those starts, followed by the five-game average fastball velocity for April and Sabathia’s average fastball velocity for each individual season.

The conclusion: Although the velocity has varied from game-to-game, as a general rule, Sabathia really has thrown slower in April.

Does that mean yesterday’s velocity is a non-issue? Maybe. It really means it’s too early to tell one way or the other. Could be a sign that the surgery cost some arm strength, or that Sabathia’s beginning to age. Could also be nothing more than a typically slow start, made even slower by the fact he didn’t have a normal spring training. It’s a curious situation, but not doomsday just yet.

2009
April game-by-game: 93.0, 94.0, 94.4, 92.3, 94.1

April game-by-game: 93.3, 94.0, 91.8, 92.8, 91.9

As I mentioned during the game yesterday, Sabathia lost some seious Lbs, and the picture above reinforces that observation. Possibly, the loss of weight is cause for the loss of velocity. Time will tell.

So why only 2 starts against MLB teams in ST?

    He’s not 40 years old.

  3. Rich in NJ April 2nd, 2013 at 1:20 pm

Joey G., like most managers, can be prone to spinning a bit to the media now and then, which is understandable, but at some point, it can cause him to look a little silly.

What does CC’s weight have to do with his velocity?

  5. LGY April 2nd, 2013 at 1:24 pm

That’s a big blow to Boras just one year before Cano’s big payday.

He just watched about $10M walk out the door.

  6. DONNYBROOK April 2nd, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Weight loss can also mean muscle mass loss throughout the body, whether it be arms, legs, etc.

    Hey – shouldn’t I get a byline??
I posted that in the last thread.

Real interesting news about Cano…. I think no matter what he’s getting $200 million.

But it’s awesome Hova is a Yankee fan. And yes, Biggie > JayZ, but c’mon there aren’t many better than Biggie!

  9. Shame Spencer April 2nd, 2013 at 1:27 pm

Am I the first one to bring this up?: What if Cano is pushing to sign now because of some PED related stuff?

  10. blake April 2nd, 2013 at 1:29 pm

“He just watched about $10M walk out the door.”

Sounds like he broke his contract with boras early so I bet he still gets a chunk

  11. yankeefeminista April 2nd, 2013 at 1:30 pm

I am too lazy to look, but I wonder what the April home-away splits are. Also, it was pretty cold at the Ole Stadium yesterday. Last year we opened in Tampa, and this year we started the season 5 days earlier than last year… I think C. is still building arm strength. Not too worried about him about now.

I read somewhere that Daric Barton was released, me think he is better option than Overbay, the guy can’t hit anymore. And no, not base on yesterday’s game.

  15. LGY April 2nd, 2013 at 1:32 pm

Have to imagine Jay Z and Co did their research.

I would think it has to do with inertia, but heh, Pedro Martinez and Koufax threw that much harder after a cheeseburger.

Cheeseburgers made with cows who were specially bred to have more fast-twitch muscle fibers.

  22. Jerkface April 2nd, 2013 at 1:35 pm

I probably should have posted this yesterday, but I really dislike watching about half the Yankees position players hit. Stewart, Overbay, Wells, Ben F, Youk, Nix, and Youkilis. Ugh. I’ve never seen a yankee team this unlikeable.

  23. rl1856 April 2nd, 2013 at 1:35 pm

Also a 1.5mph decline in av FB from 2011-2012. Largest year to year decline he has experienced so far. I don’t think CC is at full strength due to an easier workload in ST. This was probably by design to allow for a gradual increase in intensity as the final step in his recovery from offseason elbow surgery. I would not be surorised if his offseason workout regime was much lighter. If his velocity has not returned by mid ..say 7-8 starts then we have a problem. Now? Too early to tell.

  24. Jerkface April 2nd, 2013 at 1:35 pm

Yea people fire their representation all the time. I don’t think Boras gets squat of a future contract.

  25. blake April 2nd, 2013 at 1:36 pm

Throwing a baseball hard is something that’s hard to figure….obviously muscles play a part but how much is hard to say…..so many factors involved

I do think certain players play better heavier….not like out of shape but at their natural weight…..panda is a guy that doesn’t seem to be able to hit skinny for example

  26. blake April 2nd, 2013 at 1:38 pm

“Could be wrong but my understanding is that these player-agent contracts are terminable at will.”

Maybe but this is Boras…he could have protective language for himself in their deal

  27. Rich in NJ April 2nd, 2013 at 1:38 pm

“Could be wrong but my understanding is that these player-agent contracts are terminable at will.”

I think if can be proved that the subsequent contract was based on prior negotiations, the prior agent could sue on a theory of restitution.

Jay-Z’s lawyers know this and any contract will be structured to guard against that possibility.

  28. Mike Ri April 2nd, 2013 at 1:38 pm

Its his first start … not taking much from it ……. i’ll get scared after start 5 , 6 , 7

Jerkface, I 10000% agree with you.
PUKE is a Red Sock. I can’t just turn my back on the years of hared I have for him.

Especially since I know this is a 1 year rental. He will NOT be with the team next year.
Overbay and Wells are useless. Boesch and Fransicsco have never been good.

  30. blake April 2nd, 2013 at 1:39 pm

” I’ve never seen a yankee team this unlikeable.”

Of this expensive…..that’s why it’s kinda silly that they’ll spend 232 million on this….but won’t invest in the future if it requires 2014 money

  31. LGY April 2nd, 2013 at 1:41 pm

I think where Boras might be able to get a cut is if he can show that he laid some type of framework for the deal that Cano eventually signs.

However, Boras suing a player probably wouldn’t be great for business.

  32. Jerkface April 2nd, 2013 at 1:41 pm

Shame, you could be; I thought of that too, but then dismissed it. I’d like to think that isn’t the case, so until I hear otherwise, I don’t think about it. I would not hold it against him, but we know how the game of moral indignation gets played out in the media… My general premise is most are using something, detected or not. BFD :) I hope he flies under the radar if he has/is, that he isn’t harming himself if he has/is, and if he is, and he were to get nailed, that he gets a light sentence.

But as for the present, no reason to entertain it :)

  45. UnKnown April 2nd, 2013 at 1:54 pm

So Cano figures this to be a HUGE marketing opportunity. The few millions less that ROC inc. will get him vs. Boras, will be made up through a ton of marketing situations.

Cano broke out the ol’ pencil and paper and figured he would make more money this way, plus he gets a contract done sooner and stays a Yankee.

Win win for all. I would much rather Cano making his millions through Jay-Z’s marketing opportunities than via a Yankee contract. But make no mistake Robbie is still getting PAIIIDDD!!

If it does it means his average velocity is going to decline another mph from last season. His velo yesterday is not good, and every time we take a ‘wait and see’ approach on these guys, their fastball is never back to what we expect.

JAP – Oh for sure. I just figured I’d throw it out there since we heard rumblings.

It would be cool to see Cano get some endorsements out of this. I know for players that don’t speak English as a first language it’s especially difficult to get that sort of recognition. Maybe he’ll be in Jay or Bey’s next video lol.

I do love Jay Z despite the whole Gweneth Paltrow situation.

  67. austinmac April 2nd, 2013 at 2:14 pm

I have a friend’s son who pitches at a very good junior college who had labrum surgery the same week as Pineda. He feels great with no pain. However, he is getting a medical redshirt since his velocity has not returned. All people are different, but Pineda is as iffy as ever.

CC’s velocity is troubling since it is far below any previous April. We can hope it will return.

Add that to the other 10-15 hopes that need to happen.

I try to be optimistic, but if one looks at the last two years of the players, it is very scary and at this time, they have, absent miraculous rebounds from a few guys, about a bad an offense as is in the league. How many starters do they have that hit over .240 last year? Not nearly enough.

  68. Doreen April 2nd, 2013 at 2:15 pm

veteran pitchers don’t generally face alot of major league hitters in ST. most teams don’t travel with alot of thier starters and most veteran SP’s dont travel in ST. So even had he started another game or two it would probably it likely wouldn’t have gotten him alot more major leaguers to face.

i dont know why cc or tex always start slow, but i dont think it has anything to do with him only starting 2 ST games.

  71. yankeefeminista April 2nd, 2013 at 2:16 pm

Jeers, thanks for posting that. I missed the whole beginning with the Stadium shots. It was pretty classily done.

Jay-Z and Alicia singing Empire State of Mind before game 2 of 2009 WS was one of the great pregame moments at NYS. I still get goose bumps thinking about it, and that is still my go-to song on the ride to the Stadium.

  73. J. Alfred Prufrock April 2nd, 2013 at 2:19 pm

Shame, I am blissfully ignorant of the “Gweneth Paltrow situation” and will remain so :)

Did you happen to see Cano in an interview, express dismay that he makes himself available to reporters and no one ever talks to him?

It was sad; he’s this superstar and they probably just go to the same guys over and over again for quotes. Robi’s english is pretty good, and if they really wanted to apply themselves, I’m sure these papers could come up with an interpreter if they want a really genuine interview for a blowout story on him.

I remember one such story, about him going to high school in Newark and hanging out with his cousins, etc. But really, for such an elite talent, playing in this kind of market, there’s very little attention paid Robinson Cano outside of the lines.

The Yankees really miss an opportunity to promote him, too, and make him more fan friendly – which he naturally is, but his native language is Spanish, and I don’t see them doing all that much to bridge to gap.

I’d like to see a really in-depth feature done on Cano; the Times should do another (they did the one about HS years in Newark, etc.) and YES should do a couple.

Hello Yankee fans, this is your best player and greatest 2B in your team’s history, up close and personal :)

Speaking of which, no one seemed to enjoy that song more at the WS parade than Hal’s wife, which gives me hope that she enforces the rule at home that measures must be taken so that such parades happen with regularity.

It truly is amazing to look at this roster and relaize the payroll is $230M. Is it good business to pay Wells and Youkilis $25M this year? Plus, all the other salaries of the old and dispossessed. I think signing younger players to longer, reasonable contracts would have been the obvious way to go, but of course, there is 2014.

2014 has led them to greatly overspend this year and leaving them with no team next year. Not good business, in my opinion.

When I think of what the Yanks could have gotten two months ago for the $13M they spent on Wells…it is irritating to know they had they money to buy a bench but decided not to.

  89. Doreen April 2nd, 2013 at 2:30 pm

    J Alfred -

I have noticed that the Yankees do seem to be featuring Canó much more in the last few months. Enough so that I actually DID notice it.

I never knew of the article about which you speak, concerning Robby not being interviewed.

But think about who it is the media gravitate towards: Giambi, Damon, Swisher. Guys with a quick quote and who really aren’t all that “thoughtful” – just fun lovin’ guys. these are the guys they go to even if they didn’t have an impact on the game itself.

  90. yankeefeminista April 2nd, 2013 at 2:31 pm

austinmac, QFT. First year ever that I have kind of looked more forward to MiLB games.

  91. Doreen April 2nd, 2013 at 2:32 pm

also, Jack Curry did a major two parter on Cano last off-season, and followed Cano and Granderson on their trip to – aahhhh- Taiwan? Japan? Where was it???? (Hate when that happens!)

So I think the Yankees are very much aware of what Cano brings to the table.

  92. Shame Spencer April 2nd, 2013 at 2:32 pm

JAP – I’d never heard Robbie say that! How interesting. It is true, for a guy as talented as he is he flies under the radar. I remember him in a commercial with Jose Reyes and some other guys but he was literally just standing there, he wasn’t given any type of speaking part. I think it was a Nike or New Balance commercial. His English really isn’t bad at all, I think he does a fine job.. I could certainly understand if HE were the one uncomfortable giving interviews but if he’s saying he isn’t shame on the writers. And a YES feature would be amazing. Sort of makes you shake your head when you realize they did one for KEVIN YOUKILIS but have never done an in-depth thing with Robbie!

No one wants to see Kevin Youkilis’ face more than they have to. Every woman I know would LOVE to see Robbie’s face on the regular. Every time the man smiles, Bob Shepard announces a new angel got it’s wings in the great ballpark in the sky. These are the facts.

Gweneth Paltrow on her own is a situation.

Jack Curry spent time with Cano in the DR and did a story on YES.

I think it was 2 yrs ago.
    ///

Yeah that was a great one. Curry is a little too much of a YES man these days (pun intended) but he remains a very good reporter.

That was really enjoyable. I think that’s the one where Cervelli and Nunez gave Robi props for working them out in the offseason.

And I will also credit Alex for keeping it front and center how good Robi was going to be and for harping on him as the future of the team.

The papers that send beat reporters should send a columnist now and again to do a feature. Why wouldn’t it be timely, now, for instance, to do an in-depth story on Cano and how he’s going to deal with being pitched around (as he was last year) going forward?

  94. Doreen April 2nd, 2013 at 2:34 pm

“Curry is a little too much of a YES man these days (pun intended) but he remains a very good reporter.”

When the light shines a certain way you can actually read the word YES on his forehead.

He is a good reporter, and was for years at the NYT. It’s unfortunate that he has given up most of his former detachment.

  99. DONNYBROOK April 2nd, 2013 at 2:37 pm

Shame, Oh, it was so sad. He wore the Robi sad face, and said “I stand there but they never come over and ask me any questions.”

Felt bad for him. He deserves more recognition.

  101. Bronx Jeers April 2nd, 2013 at 2:38 pm

Robbie seems to be really big internationally. His English isn’t as good as you’d expect for someone that went to high school here but then again we are talking about Newark. His father speaks like he was born here. Maybe he was.

But I do see Robbie getting more and more exposure. He’s always had that clean-cut image. I think he’s kind of a mommas boy.

    Shame -

You know why the did they with Youk, don’t you?

99% of the Yankee fanbase thinks of him as a monster with an awful goatee and a strange batting stance who throws tantrums at strike three calls and brings the worst out of Joba Chamberlain.

They had to humanize him. They had to make him palatable. They had to force him on us.

    We already LOVE Robby!!!!

  105. J. Alfred Prufrock April 2nd, 2013 at 2:41 pm

Rich, I imagine if he were more detached, he would not have the job. In this climate, where newspapers are disappearing and sports departments barely exist, you can see why he’d go for the security and I’m sure, $$$, of an on-camera cushy job.

  106. yankeefeminista April 2nd, 2013 at 2:42 pm

Robi spent his high school years in Newark, but I’m sure he basically moved within his Dominican community. I think Alex grew up in a Cuban neighborhood in Miami, and being from a Dominican family, probably spoke Spanish in the home and on the streets. Spoke English in HS.

Maine Yankee, if you go to a Portland game, try to see the Barnes kid pitch. I think Ron who posts here saw him at Conn. He does have a great looking arm, unfortunately :) I can’t imagine he won’t be in AA this year. As much as I dislike the Red Sox, the Portland team tends to have good bats who really work the count.

Rich, if Cone or Leiter aren’t on, I can’t listen. Flaherty I used to think was ok, but he has become unbearable. Singleton should be more objective and more vocal to counteract Kay, but it isn’t in his personality, I don’t think, to make waves, although I’ll say this for him; he’s very good at calling it when a Yankee OF gets a bad jump.

They are pretty awful. I didn’t even watch the postgame yesterday, all things considered.

  121. yankeefeminista April 2nd, 2013 at 3:01 pm

Mike, this week will be tough, but the weekend shouldn’t be too bad. The biggest issue is usually the wind. I remember seeing Hughes at LHV OD a few years ago, and it was so cold that he couldn’t throw his change and had no feel for his curveball, so he just kept throwing fastball after fastball. I was dressed in my full football game winter gear.

Pedro Gomez was interviewed during the WBC and asked about Cano, specifically, and the idea of leadership among Latino players.

He said that during the WBC, the Latino players, on their national teams, tend to be freer to express who they are, as where on MLB teams, the whole stiff upper lip thing is imparted to them and they have to fall in line to survive.

He basically intimated that suppressing what is your natural way of being can affect your play and makes you second guess your own instincts when it comes to taking a leadership role, etc.

    It was a good interview.
