Weather: mostly cloudy, cold (43 degrees at first pitch)

0-3: The Yankees will try to avoid their first 0-3 start since, uh, when was that? Right, last year.

No leads: When was the last time the Yankees failed to have a lead in the first two games of a season when they were played at Yankee Stadium? Trick question. Before this year, it was never, dating to 1923 when the old Stadium opened.

Update, 7:14: Pettitte is caught off guard on a wild pitch and doesn’t cover home, but Cervelli makes the dive to get Shane Victorino trying to score from second. Pettitte escapes a two-single first.

Update, 7:21: Shift works against Cano for the second out.

Update, 7:30: Pettitte no runs, three hits allowed in two innings.

Update, 7:41: Yankees have their first lead since ALDS Game 5, Overbay loops two-run single into left-center, 2-0.

Update, 7:48: Pettitte gets a double-play ball for the second straight inning, 2-0 after 2 1/2.

Update, 7:51: Gardner dunks his first homer to the first row in right, 3-0.

Update, 8:28: Gardner strands two in the fourth, still 3-0. Four hits for both teams.

Update, 8:35: Impressive 1-2-3 fifth for Pettitte, believe he’s at just 54 pitches. Pettitte, by the way, is 86-49 after Yankees losses in the regular season.

Update, 8:46: Neither Pettitte nor Cano covers first, infield hit for Iglesias.

Update, 8:52: Pettitte gets the next three, 3-0 after 5 1/2.

Update, 8:54: Dempster is done after five, three runs, five hits. Junichi Tazawa is in.

Update, 8:57: Nunez rips a single to right, he’s looked good tonight at the plate and at short, although he just got thrown out stealing. Should type these compliments faster.

Update, 9:08: RBI double for Bradley Jr.

Update, 9:09: Gardner runs down David Ross’ drive to the left-center fence to keep it 3-1 after 6 1/2.

Update, 9:16: Cervelli HR to left-center, 4-1. David Robertson warming.

Update, 9:35: Top nine, 4-1. Mariano returns, trotting in.

Update, 9:49: Little shaky, but Yankees win 4-2.
