A Bronx Tale: The BBC examines the history of the Yankees

During spring training, two unfamiliar faces arrived in the Steinbrenner Field press box. Colin Murray and Patrick Nathanson were from the BBC, and they were in the states working on a two-hour radio documentary about the history and the tradition of the Yankees. They traveled to the Bronx, interviewed Henry Kissinger, and put together a fascinating exploration of the Yankees players, fans and organization.

Here’s a link to the documentary itself. Here’s a link to a blog post of Colin and Patrick writing about the experience and process of putting the documentary together. I wish I had some idea how to embed the documentary to the blog, but the links are worth a click. Certainly a unique look at the team, including a remarkable series of events in which interview requests are turned down until finally Ichiro Suzuki talks and asks whether anyone in England actually watches baseball. Eventually, Colin and Patrick get their interviews, including a conversation with Kevin Youkilis about the fact he’s better able to enjoy beer now that he doesn’t have a beard. There were also some familiar thoughts from guys like Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.

“I have the same reaction,” Rivera said. “I have the same love, the same passion. I’m retiring now, not from the game, but from everything else. The traveling, the hotels, all the things that come with that, that I got tired of. But the game itself, I still love it to the day that I die.”

Jeter was asked whether he expects to be around the Yankees forever, similar to guys like Reggie Jackson and Yogi Berra.

“Don’t know; I want to own a team,” Jeter said. “I’d like to be an owner one day and be able to call the shots. We’ll see what happens down the road. One thing with our organization, you get spoiled because all the great players get an opportunity to come back and work with guys. I don’t know what the future holds, but I’ll remain in the game.”

Colin suggested that he would be willing to chip a couple hundred bucks to help Jeter buy the Yankees.

“The Yankees are too expensive for me, buddy,” Jeter said.

Whoa… major explosions at the Boston Marathon. Already seeing some photos. The pics show a lot of blood. Not good stuff, folks.. dozens injured (as reported so far).

The Montero thing is funny. The same ppl that preach patience won’t allow Montero to go through his struggles but yet they give vets get a long leach.
    ==========================
Try to understand this: what went on here was spearheaded by a tiny minority of fans that was incessant and maniacal in its scope.
The formula is: he was ours and we let our baby go, our Baby Ruth…
Guess you are right: it is funny, very funny as well as obnoxious.
Thanks that there are only a few, but they have quieted down to the point of embarrassment.

    ——————–

They can’t talk about Montero if he isn’t performing well. That would only lead to more problems

No one saying terrorism…yet. Looks like Boylson street.

I don’t see how you can blame his problems on Rothschild, and credit Kuroda at the same time, when Rothschild’s been with both guys the same amount of time.
    ———
You don’t mess with the big three. Maybe just act as a sounding board. What the hell can you say to Andy when he dissects his own pitching? Just nod your head.

Hughes, Nova and Phelps are in finishing school – what works at the Majors level. And I maintain that you have to set up a baseline – What got you here – and then refine. I’m not sure that Rothschild has done that. Development should be at the minors level. You want to rework Nova’s delivery, send him to AAA. Hughes has been tinkering his whole Majors career, he’s still in stasis. SOS.

“BOSTON — Authorities are investigating a report of two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
There were two booms heard from near the finish line inside the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel.
Race officials locked down the hotel because of the report.
The sound of two booms, which sounded like thunder, had come a short time earlier.”

Glad to see the blog promote the BBC piece – really enjoyed it – surprisingly so given that baseball is not on the radar in the UK. But Colin Murray knows his baseball and makes it really entertaining – can’t really see how it appeals to the average Brit, but every Yankees fan will enjoy the show. (and as a native NYer and lifelong NYY fan, now living in the UK, it was really nice to connect the two worlds through the BBC).

Yankees have it pretty easy the next few series.. I think it’s perfect for what we need too. We need to play some mediocre teams to get our bats on fire. I am not sure if I consider Bluejays mediocre but having been so used to them being nothing special for so long, it’s hard to think they are anything but without Reyes.

Either way, we are playing Rays and Astros which should help give us some fun at bats !

we don’t know actually . it’s also possible to be white right wing nuts.

Tyler, the human spirit is amazing, and most people rise to the occasion, especially in times of tragedy and disaster. I used to live right on the Marathon route when I went to school in Boston. It is a great city and its people are already helping each other and those visitors who need assistance. I expect nothing less. I have seen so much generosity there and elsewhere when people are in need. #StayStrongBoston

    js,
“Domestic” terrorism has always been targeted at government targets. This one was against people of all nationalities. If you intend to do harm to specific people, you can do that. If you want to create terror, it’s a hell of a lot easier. Trust me.

Just heard that the Red Cross has received enough blood to fulfill the need. Starting medical school next year and the good people in the world are enough to keep me motivated with my goal. People can do extraordinary things.

This one just hits hard I guess after enduring Newtown and Aurora. A lot of people are posting about resiliency within a community but it’s tough to see what that gets you at this point. Life goes on but man, this isn’t going to get better without change. And I’m terrified because I have no idea what those changes are or what the answer is.
