Good sign: When the Yankees score first, they’re 5-0. When the other team scores first, they’re 2-5.

More good signs: The Yankees are on a 6-1 run. The batters have hit .321 and the starters have a 2.44 ERA in this stretch.

Update, 7:09: I still find it amazing to see so many empty seats here, even if it’s a nonattractive matchup with Arizona. Maybe I should get used it. I found it strange during the playoffs last year. Then again, I don’t have to pay for my seat, either.

Update, 7:15: 2-0 Arizona already,  Paul Goldschmidt goes the other way to right for a two-run homer.

Update, 7:23: Sabathia strands two, but he uses up 31 pitches in the first.

Update, 7:28: Wells short-circuits the first with a 4-6-3 double-play ball after Gardner’s leadoff single.

Update, 7:36: Sabathia settles down, 1-2-3 second.

Update, 7:42: Three up, three down in the Yankees second.

Update, 7:48: Now eight in a row set down by Sabathia after 1-2-3 third.

Update, 7:59: Gardner robbed at third on a nice backhand by Martin Prado, who spins for the force at second. Yankees have one hit off Miley through three.

Update 8:07: Sabathia’s retired-batter streak ends at 10 on a drag bunt by Gerardo Parra with two outs in the fourth. But Pennington fans. Still 2-0.

Update, 8:12: Youkilis gets plunked with two outs, but Ben Francisco leaves him at first. Francisco now 0 for 10.

Update, 8:16: Josh Wilson lead0ff triple off Gardner’s glove in right-center and Pollock sac fly. Make that 3-0.

Update, 8:35: Sabathia strands a runner at third in the sixth.

Update, 8:41: Yankees have their first hit since the first, two-out double in the sixth by Wells.

Update, 8:43: Cano strands him there.

Update, 8:48: 1-2-3 seventh for Sabathia, has allowed the three runs and six hits.

Update, 8:52: Francisco with a single in the seventh, finally his first hit.

Update, 8:59: Bases loaded, two outs, Nix up.

Update, 9:01: Miley breaks up his own shutout, walking in the run. He’s out, lefty Tony Sipp coming on.

Update, 9:08: So much for Miley’s great game. Gardner ties it with a two-run single. Righty Brad Ziegler coming in, runners on second and third. Only 34,369 for the announced paid attendance.

Update, 9:11: Wells bounces out to end the inning.

Update, 9:18: Sabathia 1-2-3 eighth. I believe that’s 108 pitches for him. Third straight quality start. Righty David Hernandez on to pitch for Arizona.

Update, 9:26: Hafner fourth career pinch homer, 4-3 Yankees.

Update 9:37: Yankees win 4-3. Rivera fourth save. Sabathia 3-1.
