Yankees react to bad news on Jeter

Posted by: Brian Heyman - Posted in Misc on Apr 19, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Derek Jeter is gone until at least after the All-Star break after breaking his left ankle again. (My article today about the situation). The Yankees are getting used to bad injury news. They’ve had a lot of practice reacting so far this year.

“He’s our captain, leader,” Phil Hughes said. “It’s never good news when guys are going to be out longer than you expect. But we’ve got to continue to battle along like we have been.”

The Yankees have won seven of their last nine to move to 8-6.

“It’s tough, but we haven’t had him yet,” Brett Gardner said. “When you don’t have guys, you can’t really count on them to come back. You’ve just got to make do with what you’ve got. I feel like we’ve been playing pretty good baseball so far. We’ll try to keep it going.”

Of course, Eduardo Nunez becomes even more of a key figure as the main man replacing Jeter. Nunez made his first error of the season, on a bad throw to first, in Thursday night’s 12-inning, 6-2 setback to the Diamondbacks. He also missed a grounder he probably should have had. But his defense has been better overall so far than last year. Now he needs to stay consistent. And hit more. He’s batting .233 over his 11 games.

Before the game, and before the update came on Jeter, Nunez said, “I hope he comes back this year. I hope he comes back healthy. But I’m prepared to play all year. … This is what I’ve been working for all my life.”

After the game and the update, Nunez expressed mixed feelings, saying, “It’s good for me to keep playing, but it’s not what I’m looking for.”

Also, Phil Hughes was much improved Thursday night (here’s that story), so at least he can try to build off that. And in my Yankees notebook for today, I write about Travis Hafner’s good health being a key, have Brian Cashman explaining why it’s hard right now to bring in shortstop reinforcements and look ahead to the Toronto series that starts tonight.

Nix and Nunez are ot the answer.. Time to bring Profar to the Yanks… empty the farm! Someone out there offered – Gary Sanchez, Heathcott, Banuelos, and Mark Montgomery.

    Good morning-

Sorry I haven’t been around much.

    So the suspects are brothers.

    Blake-

Thank goodness for the Lord and Taylor surveillance cameras. Incredible job of finding these %#@’&.

Yankees seem to be resembling the team from last year-rely on the homerun and difficulty manufacturing runs.

Jeter probably now using a bone stimulator to try and heal this crack in whatever bone was damaged.

  3. sunny615 April 19th, 2013 at 9:02 am

Nix and Nunez are *NOT* the answer…

    Morning all,

I did not watch much of the game last night aside from a glance here and there. Yanks are southpaw deficient to put it mildly. like to see a better option than Nix at 3b but unless we can find an offensive utility man who can play ss adequately he is likely to stay which essentially lead to this thought. Where is Ronny and can we call up Adams soon to replace Overbay and see either of them can be more productive than Overbay?

  5. sunny615 April 19th, 2013 at 9:03 am

Let’s play the trade game – what would you offer to get Jurikson Profar?

  6. sunny615 April 19th, 2013 at 9:04 am

BTW – one decent game doesn’t mean Phil Hughes is “back in form” … I’ll believe it when he can do it for 3 or 4 starts in a row.

  7. Cashmoney April 19th, 2013 at 9:04 am

bad news for Jeter and good news for Nunez. I think he will get going O wise, he might be tentative coming off latest wrist injury.

I’m not sure that’s productive….love Profar though bu the Rangers are most likely trading him for Giancarlo though if they deal him

  9. blake April 19th, 2013 at 9:06 am

Profar is a great prospect but he’s still a prospect and far from a sure thing…..it’s dangerous to offer 3′or 4 prospects for 1…..

  10. MTU April 19th, 2013 at 9:07 am

Let’s see what Nunez can do before we give up on him shall we ?

    ;)

  11. blake April 19th, 2013 at 9:08 am

I think they should consider bringing up Adams and see if he can help vs LHP…..see if he could be an upgrade over Nix or Francisco…..

There are a lot of good lefties in the AL east….it’s gonna be difficult to continually take knives to gun fights when they face LHP

  12. sunny615 April 19th, 2013 at 9:08 am

I dunno – stir the pot and offer up some more pieces… maybe the Rangers think quantity over quality… (ie, Tex from Braves)

  13. MTU April 19th, 2013 at 9:08 am

Sometimes the answers to things are hidden in plain sight.

  14. blake April 19th, 2013 at 9:09 am

Id stick with Nunez for now unless Tulo shakes loose at the deadline…..

  15. Bo knows April 19th, 2013 at 9:09 am

Nunez will be fine. He hit the ball hard three times last night. As to fielding he’s showing a lot of range, and making some excellent plays. His footwork is much improved. Add in the speed and he’s a keeper. He just needs reps. This under the microscope playing time is obviously hard on him. He’s been playing under that pressure for years.

  16. sunny615 April 19th, 2013 at 9:09 am

I think we’ve seen enough of what Nunez can (and can’t do) already. He’s a AAAA guy. I’m not sold on him at all.

  17. MTU April 19th, 2013 at 9:09 am

Mustelier calls out to you Blake.

    Cah-

Good morning. Mustelier is still in Tampa rehabbing. I thought it was only a bruised knee?

Attached are the stats of the SWB Railriders. I’d actually like to see the Yankees promote Mustelier to play 3rd and move Youkilis to first. Mustelier can at least drive the ball the other way, especially now that Jeter is out for a lengthy rehab.

Of course….but you don’t have to trade half the farm for Nunie…..I’ve seen Profar play a lot and once in person….he’s got special potential but he’s still a prospect and not a sure thing as no prospect is

  24. sunny615 April 19th, 2013 at 9:12 am

The one brother apparently killed himself by setting off explosives and then was run over by a car?

  27. sunny615 April 19th, 2013 at 9:14 am

true blake, but I’ve already seen Nunie play for the past couple of years, and no one would empty any kind of farm (animal or otherwise) for him.

  28. Yankee Trader April 19th, 2013 at 9:15 am

Adams, Maruszak and Velazquez have all played 3rd.

  29. MTU April 19th, 2013 at 9:15 am

Not really. We have numerous guys who might be able to help in various capacities.

Adams and Mustelier both come to mind.

If the AA guys are really swinging it as the season progresses maybe we give one or two of them a shot ? (Austin, Heathcott)

Isn’t Mongomery ready to help in the Pen ?

  30. Cashmoney April 19th, 2013 at 9:16 am

*dont know. But that’s the meal ticket that keeps nix in the big league in this particular configuration of the Yankees.

  31. blake April 19th, 2013 at 9:17 am

My guess is Montgomery is up sometime soon….he’s dominating in the minors again at AAA and they really could use another reliable arm in the pen

  35. Bo knows April 19th, 2013 at 9:18 am

For the last couple of years Nunez has played all over the field with long stints of sitting on the bench. Main thing is we know he can play at the Majors level. Last night, if he’s throwing to Overbay there is no error. Give him half a season then assess.

  36. Cashmoney April 19th, 2013 at 9:19 am

YT, and we thought Adams only had sprained ankle, Yanks injuries has been shrouded in mysteries lately.

Blake, if either can even remotely play adequate, then you put Nix, Ben and Overbay on the chopping block! my guess is only Nix has a remote chance of being claim on the waiver.

  37. Yankee Trader April 19th, 2013 at 9:19 am

Doesn’t it seem that these Yankees are similar to last years, relying on the long ball, and having difficulty manufacturing runs?

  38. sunny615 April 19th, 2013 at 9:20 am

i dunno – i think we’ve given him enough time already to assess… how much more time do you need to see a pile of stuff for what it is instead of what it could be?

  39. Cashmoney April 19th, 2013 at 9:21 am

hey that kind of leads me to think of Manbam, the usual case is that when you think about whether or not to have TJ surgery, you normally wind up having it but at the cost of time elapse. Mott next on that list if i were to guess.

They should put Musty on a milk carton.

Nunez needs to be given a full opportunity since he has never had one. He is not a problem right now.

Cano and Youk need to hit LHP. If Wells can too, great, but we’ll see.

Don’t know if you’ve been following this but this whole thing is totally chilling. I’ve had television on all night. The policeman killed at MIT was killed by the two brothers, the identified perpetrators. One is dead, killed in a police shootout, and the doctors said that he had wounds consistent with explosive devices. They were seen throwing explosive devices out of the car they were driving, and a witness saw them throw a pressure cooker from the car.

Boston is shut down, businesses and schools, and from what I understand they had vacated Watertown. They’re not allowing traffic in or out. They’ve interviewed an uncle of the brothers, who lives in Maryland, and he said one of them called him to say he was sorry for what they did. The uncle is really upset about what they did. Now they’re interviewing high school friends of the remaining suspect, who are describing him as a “normal kid” who enjoyed things in high school. They think he had to be led by someone else because they didn’t see him as the kind of kid who would do what he did.

The younger brother is still at large. 1900 policemen and swat teams are looking for the kid. Big worry is that he has explosives on his body.

As an aside, huge credit to the capabilities of our police and FBI, in terms of identifying the correct perps.

  84. Cashmoney April 19th, 2013 at 10:01 am

Profar, batting .281 through nine games with Round Rock, was ranked No. 1 by several major publications coming into the season.
“He has a rare combination of skills,” said Jim Callis, executive editor of Baseball America, the sport’s top trade publication. “He’s a legitimate shortstop, though he may not play there for Texas due to the presence of Elvis Andrus. He has the offensive ability to be a star even if he changes positions. His worst tool is probably his speed, which would grade as solid.
“He’s a potential .300 hitter with 20 homers annually, a switch-hitter with tremendous bat speed and advanced control of the strike zone.”
Round Rock manager Bobby Jones said, “I’m probably most impressed by his plate discipline. He refuses to give in, very rare for a kid his age.”
“I’m not going to chase the pitcher’s pitch,” Profar said. “I’ll take a walk if I can’t get a ball in the zone.”

  85. blake April 19th, 2013 at 10:04 am

Basing your strategy on Spring Training results is contraindicated. Nunez is the Yankee SS, looks promising. Much more range then Jeter, so far it’s a wash. That stop in the hole and strong throw was a thing of beauty. Growing pains are the norm for young players. Ichiro, Youk and Wells are my main focus. The Yankees need two out of three to come through.

  109. Jesus Bustero April 19th, 2013 at 10:32 am

Oh geez is this the end of Jeter’s career? I don’t see him coming back as anything other than a DH in 2014. He could pick up that option for 8 million but it seems his ankle will always be a major risk and will limit him at shortstop.

Eduardo Nunez has done hard time with this organization. He deserves a legitimate chance. No trades need to be made unless it’s for someone to play in place of the roid head with osteoporosis of the hip.

  110. RadioKev April 19th, 2013 at 10:33 am

Youk has a little more range than my couch at 3B. Plan seems to be – fall over and hope the ball hits the glove. The scoop at first last night was hilarious, did the scoop thing – no ball.

JR was and is a bona fide prospect. His hit tool is very good. I saw many of his AB’s last year, and even though the numbers didn’t cooperate, I really expected him to hit this year. I was also buoyed by his end of season power last year. He is an A level prospect, and should be perceived as such.

This is my position also. Too many young guys exited the organization, creating an isthmus that now cannot be bridged comfortably. We need like multiple guys to pan out, as a result, or at least we need to flood certain positions and hope that ONE pans out.

Paco: Murphy may not be discussed much here, but he’s always been a prospect because of his bat. He played some third base for Charleston when they were bringing him along behind the plate.

His accelerated progress behind the plate puts him ahead of Romine, because he’s hands down a better hitter and always projected as the superior bat. He didn’t really take a step back last year, but because he was more focused on catching and his numbers weren’t there, it was assumed his bat was getting trumped by having been bumped up to AA, and people stopped talking about him on those “scouting” sites.

A close to 40 something athlete that shatters an ankle, is No different than a race horse that does likewise. THIS, is going to be an issue for Jeet the remainder of his Everyday life, and Certainly for the remainder of his athletic career. The ankle was re-broken, (ignore the Yankee clap-trap about a “small crack”), even though it was being babied. The ankle was Not exposed to full-blown baseball activities. Jeet did Not slide on it, he did Not run on it at full-speed, he certainly did Not expose the ankle to the everyday stress that warrants calling a season a Marathon. What can be expected whenever Jeet does resume daily baseball activity without restrictions? Jeets days as a full-time SS are GONE. To even run him out there occasionally, would be to risk another crack in that ankle. Upon his return, Jeet will be a DH, and even then, everyone will hold their breath when he runs the bases. This injury is a game changer for Jeet, and means he will HAVE to use his contract option for next season. Nobody is gonna pay Millions for a 40 something with a bum wheel, that could Crack at Any time.

Bo, Austin looked a little off in OD game, but is also being pitched around. Certainly was in the Wednesday day game I attended. Heathcott has actually had good AB’s, but was slowed by the injury. He did fine in the cold on OD last Thursday, and it was freezing cold (with nasty winds). I expect him to hit fine. He’s had some infield hits where he is getting on with his speed, not really driving the ball, which is fine and good, but think he will get more barrel on the ball as season progresses.

  136. Cashmoney April 19th, 2013 at 11:07 am

Zolio, Adams, Musty, those are the three I think can offer immediate helps to the Yanks in terms of their bats. I understand Zolio is still shaky defensively. I mostly agree – but I also keep in mind that most will never amount to much. Look at a lot of the major trades in recent years – unless they included top talent they usually don’t pan out for the team taking the minor leaguers.

I wouldn’t trade a ton of talent for anyone over the age of 28 or so. I would have sent a lot of talent for Upton (and wish that it had been an option), or Andrus or someone like that. Obviously you empty the top level for Stanton.

I would trade some talent for Tulo, despite the fact that he is over 28 and has missed a ton of time with injuries, largely because it is near impossible to find power hitting middle infielders. (he would look mighty nice next to Cano, and that path is no longer blocked by Jeter playing every day).

  165. yankeefeminista April 19th, 2013 at 11:36 am

Nevermind Tulo, I take Jed Lowrie, he aint shabby if healthy. Oakland did give up a decent package for him.

  180. Rich in NJ April 19th, 2013 at 12:04 pm

Beane does a great job with no money.

  181. Patrick April 19th, 2013 at 12:05 pm

Tulo is way better than Lowrie. Get it done Cash!

  182. Rich in NJ April 19th, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Tulo makes $13m more a year and would cost a bunch of prospects, so there is no apples to apples comparison.

Does Tulo alone make them WS contenders for the next 4 years if he costs Sanchez, Austin, etc., I don’t think so.

  183. RadioKev April 19th, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Tulo ain’t going anywhere. Rockies are trying to compete.

    MTU,

Yeah I concur with Yankeefem that Joseph just is not of use other than off the bench.

You’re right, he can really hit and even has left-handed power for our park, but he is just not going to cut it on defense. Same problem with Almonte – can’t field.

This is the problem with all the “hit” guys who could otherwise help, and the “D” guys, like Mesa, just can’t make contact enough to survive against ML pitching.

This is why the “reasoning” that we still have a good farm system, is like some non sequitur when it comes to defending Cashman having effectively moved the young players he did that could have helped the team bridge two eras, and even extend the life of the one commencing from the pivotal year of 2010.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
