Youkilis scratched

Kevin Youkilis was just scratched from the Yankees lineup. I assume it’s the back again, but there’s been no announcement.

UPDATE: Yep, it’s the back. It got tight during batting practice.

Brett Gardner CF
Ben Francisco DH
Robinson Cano 2B
Vernon Wells LF
Francisco Cervelli C
Brennan Boesch RF
Eduardo Nunez SS
Lyle Overbay 1B
Jayson Nix 3B

Is this going to be the thing that keeps him at ~120 games played this year? Musty/Adams come save us.

  2. charlestonchew April 22nd, 2013 at 6:30 pm

The lineup is much worse without Youkilis…. Much worse.

‘Looks like Cano used the spokeswoman for HIS CHARITY ORGANIZATION to buy PEDs from Biogenesis.

What else? Of all the people in the world to be on Biogenesis’ list.

So Cano’s pal Melky is a PED cheat and now a Cano employee is on the list for Biogenesis.

The Yanks should trade him for as much as they can get because the last thing they need is another A-Rod.

    Sad.

I’m waiting on Nunez to improve, which I think will happen once he finishes shaking off the two HBP in the arms (they do the swinging, after all).

I do think that it’s time to call someone up to replace Nix. Adams is an obvious choice because of his experience playing 2B. It’s nice to see Boesch in the lineup over Ichiro. It’s been pretty obvious that he’s the hotter hitter and that he’s got something in him still.

If we win today, it’s on the backs of Boesch and Nunez Cervelli and Wells, I think.

  5. pkyankfan69 April 22nd, 2013 at 6:34 pm

ESPN just gave the Yankee lineup before this Youk change… Lindsay Czarniak or however you spell her name actually said this… “Yankee lefty slugger Lyle Overbay will sit against lefty Matt Moore”.

    Calling Overbay a slugger, LMAO.

  6. Doreen April 22nd, 2013 at 6:34 pm

Ok…this is clearly not their best lineup….

    Sigh.

    Get well soon Youk.

  7. dayglo April 22nd, 2013 at 6:36 pm

Cervelli fifth?!!?? Much rather have him second.

I think the last Yankee old timers lineup was better than this. Wow.

  8. mick April 22nd, 2013 at 6:39 pm

    RIP Richie Havens

  9. Duh Innings II April 22nd, 2013 at 6:40 pm

Hahaha love you all ignoring me. Keep it up. I love it.

  10. MTU April 22nd, 2013 at 6:41 pm

I said you keep Youkilis at 1st.

IMO it would reduce the chance of further injury.

It is not as demanding a position as the hot corner.

Youk at 1st, Musty or Adams at 3B.

That’s the way it should have been from the start.

  11. Tar April 22nd, 2013 at 6:44 pm

I would move Francisco to the 8th spot and move everybody else up one.

Which leads me to my second point—one reason Gardner has only 1 stolen base is because of Cano hitting behind him.

If Gardner steals second, Robiie will never see a good pitch to hit. The announcers were saying that GGBG was a distraction to Cano because he was waiting for him to run.

On the contrary I think that Gardner is A) distracting the pitcher and B) causing Cano to see some decent pitches. I think Gardner holding up is coming from Joe.

Without Youk and only Wells behind Cano… that is not going to cut it. Maddon is going to make sure Robbie doesn’t beat him this series.

I would bat Cano second, and just pick your spots. At least until reinforcements come.

  12. MTU April 22nd, 2013 at 6:44 pm

Havens now has “freedom” from his Earthly bond.

Can still hear him at “Woodstock”.

  13. kd April 22nd, 2013 at 6:44 pm

adams, if healthy, should be up. he’s 26. give him a chance or cut him

  15. J. Alfred Prufrock April 22nd, 2013 at 6:48 pm

kd, they already DFA’d him :D
    ///

So, Youk out with back trouble? In and out? Get used to it.

  16. luis April 22nd, 2013 at 6:49 pm

I didn’t know who Richie Heavens… Thanks to Mick, I know now… A true poet, rest in peace.

    Tar,

Very good point re: Gardner not stealing

    Doreen,

This lineup is as good as it can be with the players on the roster… I would DFA Francisco and call up Adams, he is tearing it up down in triple A… I wouldn’t have put Francisco on the 2 spot though

  17. luis April 22nd, 2013 at 6:50 pm

    Primo,

So he is no longer on the 40 man roster?

  18. J. Alfred Prufrock April 22nd, 2013 at 6:52 pm

Nope, primo, he’s not on it anymore.

  19. MTU April 22nd, 2013 at 6:53 pm

“In and out? Get used to it.”

They can reduce the # of days by shifting him to 1st.

    he’s better over there anyway.

    charlestonchew April 22nd, 2013 at 6:30 pm
The lineup is much worse without Youkilis…. Much worse.

    ——————————–
get use to it he’s going to hit the DL a couple of times this year

  21. Rich in NJ April 22nd, 2013 at 6:54 pm

Youk’s physical issues are why some of us questioned the contract, not the desire to put him on the team.

  22. luis April 22nd, 2013 at 6:54 pm

Wow!… I wonder why nobody picked him up on waivers?… this happened this off-season right?

  23. Tar April 22nd, 2013 at 6:55 pm

    MTU

I prefer him at 1B as well, but a tight back is going to show up no matter where he plays.

And the other thing is I much prefer Overbay to Nix. So for me the best line-up right now is with Youk at 3B

  24. Sir Harden Thick April 22nd, 2013 at 6:56 pm

Do know what sucks? While keeping the Bos Bomber alive instead of killing him, he will get his day in court. Which will be a lengthy one, so much evidence involved. His face will be on TV, newspaper’s every day when trail starts. I feel horrible for the families that have to see that again.

  25. Captain Clutch April 22nd, 2013 at 6:57 pm

It’s really amazing that Girardi won’t even give Hafner a chance to play against lefties. If he really thinks that Francisco a AAA hitter is a better option he is out of his mind. I hate how he can never have a feel for the game or just try something out he always has to do what the binder says. Francisco shouldn’t even be on the roster and him batting 2nd is insane.

  26. J. Alfred Prufrock April 22nd, 2013 at 6:57 pm

They can put Adams on 3rd since they have Overbay.

They signed an injury-prone player to replace an injury-prone player, so who knows how much they actually get out of him going forward. If he were reliable, they could use one of Adams-Mustelier and cut Overbay.

Of course, I don’t actually expect to ever see Adams promoted.

  27. luis April 22nd, 2013 at 6:57 pm

    No Tar,

Mustelier or Adams at third and Youkilis at first is a better lineup than Overbay in it

  28. J. Alfred Prufrock April 22nd, 2013 at 6:58 pm

Tar, Nix is a nightmare. Unfortunately, they have no one to back up Nuney at short.

  29. joeman April 22nd, 2013 at 6:58 pm

in the last 3 years he’s missed almost a season of time

  31. MTU April 22nd, 2013 at 6:59 pm

    Tar-

1st is way less physically demanding. That’s where he belongs.

I don’t use Nix at 3rd. For me it’s Mustelier or Adams. That’s my combo They both are likely to be upgrades IMO.

  32. J. Alfred Prufrock April 22nd, 2013 at 6:59 pm

Shouldn’t Overbay play in San Francisco, any way? :D

  33. Tar April 22nd, 2013 at 7:00 pm

    CC

The really stupid thing is Hafner has better numbers vs LH pitchers across the board than RH batting Franciso.

  34. Rich in NJ April 22nd, 2013 at 7:00 pm

Maybe Youk shouldn’t play at all on turf.

  35. J. Alfred Prufrock April 22nd, 2013 at 7:01 pm

I hope Robi doesn’t fret about this Biogenesis crap. We need him carefree :D

  36. Tar April 22nd, 2013 at 7:01 pm

    Wait!!!

I’m talking about players CURRENTLY on the team. You guys are cheating!!!! :D

  37. Doreen April 22nd, 2013 at 7:02 pm

It’s early – still April. they will give Francisco opportunities just like that other guy -Randy Wynn. But if he does not deliver, they will not keep him around for long.

It’s tough to be patient, but I keep telling myself, it’s just the beginning of the third week of hte season – a LOT of games left to play.

And usually stuff works itself out.

  38. Rich in NJ April 22nd, 2013 at 7:02 pm

“I hope Robi doesn’t fret about this Biogenesis crap. We need him carefree ”

It probably depends on what the truth is. That is not to say I doubt him, but only he knows.

  39. joeman April 22nd, 2013 at 7:02 pm

nothing new him sitting out games, this guy is a waste …

  40. Doreen April 22nd, 2013 at 7:03 pm

    Rich in NJ -

Not being able to play Youk on turf would stink, since that’s at least 18 games (well, minus the 3 already played)

    And they’re consecutive games…

  41. Doreen April 22nd, 2013 at 7:04 pm

Mustelier just started playing again after being hurt; he is not an option.

Stuff will sort itself out by the end of May.

  42. Rich in NJ April 22nd, 2013 at 7:04 pm

    Doreen

Like everything else in life, it’s a cost/benefit thing.

If turf is the reason his back is already a problem this early in the season, then it has to be looked at, or maybe just DH him on turf.

  43. UnKnown April 22nd, 2013 at 7:04 pm

Kurkjian on the 4 letter said because Cano has had his name brought up more times before than just this one, it is definitely worth paying attention to.

    =====================
    Ok … Point taken :D

  45. MTU April 22nd, 2013 at 7:05 pm

Mustelier should be ready in no time flat.

  46. Doreen April 22nd, 2013 at 7:05 pm

    Snow in Denver again!!!

    (My SIL is probably pissed!!!!)

  47. Doreen April 22nd, 2013 at 7:06 pm

    Rich in NJ -

    then you lose Hafner.

But, I don’t necessarily disagree with you; just, it stinks…

  48. UnKnown April 22nd, 2013 at 7:06 pm

Twins snowed out again tonight too

  49. joeman April 22nd, 2013 at 7:06 pm

the guy has as many K’s as hits & keep calling him by that name, that’s what the RS fans called him..how sickening to hear it

  50. MTU April 22nd, 2013 at 7:07 pm

    Enjoy the game folks.

    later.

  51. luis April 22nd, 2013 at 7:07 pm

    Take care MTU

  52. Rich in NJ April 22nd, 2013 at 7:07 pm

“Kurkjian on the 4 letter said because Cano has had his name brought up more times before than just this one, it is definitely worth paying attention to.”

I’m not sure it is other than the contract. If some really good players uses, then it’s probably still rampant.

  53. dayglo April 22nd, 2013 at 7:11 pm

In the Good Ol’ Days, Youk would have been a great pick-up to spot ARod & Tiex at 1st/3rd and play DH… But that was the Good Ol’ Days…
