8. Brett Lawrie 3B

9. Maicer Izturis 2B

Mark Buehrle LHP

Umpires: Paul Schrieber HP, Chad Fairchild 1B, Jeff Kellogg 2B, Chris Conroy 3B

TV/Radio: YES/WCBS 880

Weather: clear, comfortable

No night fright: Yankees pitching is 8-4 in night games, and with a 2.89 ERA. The day shift? Try 3-5 with a 5.58 ERA.

Francisco cold: Ben Francisco hasn’t held up his end as a righty DH so far. He’s off to a .080 start. That’s 2 for 25. He’s 2 for 23 vs. lefties. That’s .087.

Update, 7:17: Kuroda not fooling anyone so far. Two-run homer by Edwin Encarnacion, plus two singles and a walk allowed. Make that three singles.

Update, 7:28: Weak first inning for Yankees vs. the lefty, down 1-2-3 with two Ks.

Update, 7:33: Kuroda serves up another homer, No. 1 for Brett Lawrie, fly ball to the right-field seats, 3-0.

Update, 7:42: Wells is doing well against his old team, nice shot over the CF fence, 3-1.

Update, 7:50: Finally, 1-2-3 inning for Kuroda.

Update, 8:04: Cano three-run HR, 4-3 Yankees. No. 184 in his career, tied for 18th in Yankees history. Now 732 RBI, tied for 20th.

Update, 8:17: Overbay makes up for a two-out error with a leaping catch.

Update, 8:23: Cervelli continues decent start, solo shot to left, 5-3. His third HR.

Update, 8:46: 5-3 after five. Kuroda hasn’t given up a hit since the second.

Update, 8:54: Another 1-2-3 inning for Kuroda, wow, did he settle down. I think he’s at 103 pitches.

Update, 9:02: Two on, one out for the Yankees in the sixth. Buehrle leaves. Righty Brad Lincoln comes on.

Update, 9:06: Lincoln gets Nunez on a pop to shallow left and Overbay on a grounder to third. Headed for the seventh. Joba replaces Kuroda.

Update, 9:10: Chamberlain takes a bouncer of his hand, but he’s staying in. Infield hit.

Update, 9:14: Guess he was OK, retires the next three.

Update, 9:24: Umpires meeting after Francisco called out at first. May have been safe. Very close. They reverse the call. Can’t remember that happening. John Gibbons is arguing. He throws his cap down and is ejected. Second straight game he’s been ejected. Brett Cecil will come on to pitch, first and second, one out.

Update, 9:34: Cecil gets out of the jam. David Robertson on to pitch.

Update, 9:43: Good inning for Robertson.

Update, 9:49: 5-3, Rivera on for the ninth. Attendance only 31,445.

Update, 9:57: Yankees win 5-3.

    Good evening guys,

    Go Yankees Go Hiroki san!!

” Yankees pitching is 8-4 in night games, and with a 2.89 ERA. The day shift? Try 3-5 with a 5.58 ERA.”

Weren’t the Yanks far better during the daytime last year? And now it’s the other way around?

    Why is it so?

Now before anyone starts ragging on Girardi please check the roster, the ages and the Cashman off season “effort”!

Cashman has obtained retreads and like tires they often blow out sooner rather than later!

  7. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:09 pm

Go, Wang! Although there goes SWB with infield errors again.

    Hi, Luis!

  8. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 7:10 pm

Please don’t try to catch the ball with your bare hand, Mr. Kuroda.

  9. austinmac April 25th, 2013 at 7:12 pm

The stands are largely empty. Way to build the enthusiasm.

  10. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:13 pm

  11. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:14 pm

    Hi YF!!

Good and elegant play from Cano..

Tell me what you want me to weigh in, and I will do so after the game ;)

  12. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:14 pm

It is a nice night in NY. However, people tend not to come out in April anyway, esp. weekday games.

  13. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:15 pm

A little bit outside, but I liked that pitch

  14. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:16 pm

    DAMN!!!

  15. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:16 pm

    Luis, will do.

  16. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:17 pm

Love the way Melky goes oppo. Sigh.

  17. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:19 pm

    Another rough first inning

  18. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

Kuroda is all over the place

  19. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

    Francisco gonna homer? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah bazinga

  20. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

Hiro will settle down, but we can pick him up here.

  21. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Hopefully we fair better against the Jays pitching… This lineup doesn’t inspire much confidence

  22. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:23 pm

We have nothing to worry about we have Francisco batting 2nd.

  23. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

Leiter is doing color on the MLB Network Showcase Showdown broadcast.

  24. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

    Wow just wow

  25. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

    That’s not a strike

  26. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

    Bo,

If you are still around… I agree with your post in previous thread ( gardner )…I think expectations are so high in Yankeeland that they want an allstar in every position… Same happens with Nunez…SMH

    Ugh,

At least gadner made him throw some pitches… Francisco is horrible… Three days in a row in the 2 spot, Yikes!

  27. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

    These ab’s look so uninspired

  28. Sir Harden Thick April 25th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

I think the fairy dust has worn off, and this is the offense everyone said it would be

  29. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

I love how Kay says that Francisco has to snap out of it. Like he is some all star just slumping. Maybe this is what he is…a AAA guy who can’t hit mlb pitching. But of course Girardi bats him 2nd.

  30. Shame Spencer April 25th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

This is not a great look for Jose… stop fighting the hot, Jose!

  31. Shame Spencer April 25th, 2013 at 7:28 pm

    ..um.. was Robbie okay there??

  32. itsgonnabealongseason April 25th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

This is the real Yankees folks.

Enjoy the rancid, crap sandwich Cashman is shoving down your thoats.

    ————————

If they went on a long win streak would that build enthusiasm?

  34. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:30 pm

Gardner has to do betterthan a .310 obp in the leadoff

  35. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

Did mlb say the last yankees extra base hit was cano’s homer on monday?

  36. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

    Tight zone tonight

  37. austinmac April 25th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

    Luis,

We are lucky if we have league average players at most positions.

  38. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

Yes, ac1, that is what they said.

  39. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

    Oh come on

  40. itsgonnabealongseason April 25th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

    LOL at Kuroda

  41. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

Another run or 2 and this game is over. Kuroda’s command is awful.

  42. itsgonnabealongseason April 25th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

This Yankee team is as dead as the crowd.

What will the excuse be tonight for the anemic play?

  43. The Other Phil April 25th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Man, he’s not fooling anyone out there.

  44. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Yeesh, is it too late to put my ramen meal Vow of Victory™ into the record?

  45. austinmac April 25th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

    AAO,

These guys are not going on a long winning streak. The fans aren’t as stupid as Hal thought. They can see the roster. It is Cano and the eight dwarves.

  46. itsgonnabealongseason April 25th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Red Sox off to an big early lead.

  47. Sir Harden Thick April 25th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Encarnion and Lawrie are hot. Gonna be a LONG 4 games vs them

  48. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

    Luis,

We are lucky if we have league average players at most positions.

    =======================

Right now…. Yup… You know this lineup is very, very bad when you have francisco in the 2 spot and Cervelli in the 5th

  49. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Lawrie is hot? He ws batting 125.

  50. The Other Phil April 25th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Middle, up. Everything is hittable. Yikes.

  51. JobaTipsHisCap April 25th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Yankees offense is almost a joke

  52. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Japanese pitcher to Japanese batter who hits it to Japanese fielder, how many times has that happened in the MLB?

  53. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

I feel like you have to have hafner in the line up vs a lefty that throws 80 mph fastballs

  54. itsgonnabealongseason April 25th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

The Yankees are like the Washington Generals vs the Globetrotters…just no chance.

  55. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Let’s get Joey B, Hiro. Otherwise, this could turn into a Adam Warren kind of game.

  56. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Sick of how robotic girardi manages…

  57. MG April 25th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Kuroda is a terrific pitcher but he has absolutely nothing tonight.

The Yankees need to score a bunch of runs to be in the game.

How can they play without a backup infielder and have a slug like Ben Francisco not only taking up roster space but also batting 2nd? That is just bad…

  58. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

    Nice

  59. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:38 pm

Still plenty close if we had any kind of offense.

  60. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:38 pm

Warren has an era under 2 so maybe that wouldnt be bad

  61. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

We are going to see lefties as often as teams can find them to throw at us

  62. Sir Harden Thick April 25th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

Don’t worry. Granderson and his .240 and Tex and his .250 will be back soon

  63. Shame Spencer April 25th, 2013 at 7:40 pm

These are the games where you need an O that can pick up the pitcher…being so early, against the Jays’ pitching, this is a very winnable game.

Even the worst teams go on some type of win streak. I’m just trying to think of ways for the fans to get excited.

  65. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

    Vern!!!!!

  66. The Other Phil April 25th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

    Verney!!!

  68. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

At least wells is proving to be a good pick up

  69. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

Go Wells!! He absolutely owns crappy Buehrle.

  70. MG April 25th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

the Vernon Wells redemption tour continues…

  71. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

At least grandy and tex make their low averages count with homers and rbis

  72. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Grrr. Keep going; this is Buerhle, guys.

  73. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

No way does Wells sit for Ichiro or Gradner when Granderson comes back.

  74. The Other Phil April 25th, 2013 at 7:43 pm

Buerlhe looks hittable tonight. If HK can limit the damage, bats can get back in this.

  75. ac1 April 25th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

Gardner and ichiro will both lose playing time to grandy at this rate

  76. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

Some patience would go a long way guys

  77. Sir Harden Thick April 25th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

Two more horrible swings by Ichiro and Nunez

  78. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

Ichiro is the one who should sit

  79. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:45 pm

  81. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:46 pm

    Nice play.

  84. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:48 pm

    Good play there

  85. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:49 pm

Knowing Girardi he will sit Wells. He will say because of what Ichiro has done in the past he deserves to play. The usual Yankees veteran crap.

  86. MG April 25th, 2013 at 7:49 pm

Nix looked like Graig Nettles on that shot down the line…

  87. MG April 25th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

I’m not a big fan of Girardi’s but if Wells continues to hit he isn’t going to sit him, he isn’t that stupid…

  88. luis April 25th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

    Good slider there

  89. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:51 pm

I know…But he is the one who should

    ———-

The thing that should happen but won’t, because Cash is not proactive, is when Grandy comes back to try and trade Ichiro. He will make 6 mil next year and that extra 6 mil would buy 3 Cashman type players.

  92. yankeefeminista April 25th, 2013 at 7:52 pm

Chien Ming Wang through 5 innings for the SWB RailRiders. 5 IP, 2H, 2R, 0ER, 2BB, 2K. Hasn’t given up an earned run in 10.1 IP in AAA.

  93. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:53 pm

he isn’t going to sit him, he isn’t that stupid…

    Hopefully lol

  94. Bo knows April 25th, 2013 at 7:53 pm

Boy, Yankee fans – Why do you watch these games? So you can come on here and kvetch. Blech!

You’re crying for Granderson and Teix? 40 mil of salary and 20 mil of production? In playing time the PS was a month ago, How did that go?

  95. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:54 pm

    Overbay is dreadful against lefties

  96. MG April 25th, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Overbay can’t hit Buerhle with a tennis racket, it isn’t fair to play him because they don’t have a right handed bat on the bench that can fill in.

  97. jackamir April 25th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

Juan Rivera got the shaft. His bat is better than what we have presently.

  98. Sir Harden Thick April 25th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

  99. Sir Harden Thick April 25th, 2013 at 7:57 pm

    Francisco…..Yawn

    Due.

  101. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:58 pm

Nunez should be batting 2nd. I don’t know why Girardi is treating this spot in the order like it doesn’t matter.

  102. Sir Harden Thick April 25th, 2013 at 7:59 pm

Crap, almost a HR will buy him a few more games

  103. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 7:59 pm

    He missed an absolute meatball

  104. luis April 25th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

That’s all we can hope with Francisco… That he might be able to kkep one of those flyballs fair for a homer… He is the epitome of an all or nothing hitter

  105. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 8:01 pm

The more proper form is actually Chien-Ming Wang (or Wang Chien-Ming if speaking Chinese) with the hyphen. Chien-ming is a single name.

Come on Kuroda san….Keep it here

  123. tomingeorgia April 25th, 2013 at 8:08 pm

This is why I lay low during game threads. Fall behind, gloom and doom reigns. Get ahead, it’s a fluke, doom and gloom to come. Kuroda will pull himself together, and the Yanks will win. Let’s go, Hiro!

  124. Shame Spencer April 25th, 2013 at 8:12 pm

Wang is signed on a one-year MiLB deal, right? I wonder if they could retain him for next season…. it’d be really nice depth if things go well for him this season.

He’s such a big deal in Taiwan… I wonder how they’ve treated him since he’s had some difficulties in his career.

  125. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 8:12 pm

    Damn come on ump

tom, there is no gloom and doom when Buerhle’s pitching. :)

  130. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 8:16 pm

Since Overbay can’t hit he has to field easy balls like that. His defense really hasn’t been good at all.

They have to put him on the active roster by june 1st. He cannot be optioned because he has too much service time, though if he has options remaining its possible he could agree to it.

Eagles had the #4 pick. The NFL draft can drag, but teams are on the clock. A Ben Francisco at-bat may take less time, but the uncertainty of it can make time bend with tortuous elasticity, like have the life choked out of you by an over-sized rubber band.

    Yeah to no pace meter!

  275. Jesus Bustero April 25th, 2013 at 10:01 pm

Cerv in the 5-hole. Gotta admit. Kinda surreal.

  276. luis April 25th, 2013 at 10:04 pm

Good game…Kuroda battled lack of command all night long, very gutsy outing… The O responded tonight… The BP was excellent, so was the D and Mo was Mo… Francisco needs to go, you can’t have a RH batter that doesn’t hit LHP’s… Especially a pitcher like Buerlhe.

  277. Jesus Bustero April 25th, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Ichiro is about to turn around his season. Gotta get back Youk and Grandy.

  278. jacksquat April 25th, 2013 at 10:07 pm

I wish Mo would do this for a couple more years.

  279. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 10:10 pm

    Let’s go Oakland Athletics vs.Showaltimore!

  280. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 10:15 pm

Like to see Ivan the Great on the mound tomorrow.

    A reappearance of the “SuperNova”.

    I’d settle for progress though.

    ;)

  281. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 10:17 pm

Ladies and gentlemen, your New York Giants are on the clock.

  282. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 10:17 pm

I think Francisco is running out of time.

  283. luis April 25th, 2013 at 10:17 pm

    MTU,

He has been progressing… I think you will see some more tomorrow

  284. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 10:19 pm

    Luis-

    Let’s hope so.

  285. austinmac April 25th, 2013 at 10:26 pm

Rivera looked unhittable today. Good win after being down. You have to respect Kuroda. He had no splitter but battled and won. He is a guy who finds a way.

  286. Captain Clutch April 25th, 2013 at 10:28 pm

Good thing they face a righty tomorrow so Hafner is allowed on the field again. On Saturday when they face a lefty Nunez has to bat 2nd. Francisco’s days should be numbered and hopefully Girardi realized that it’s ridiculous to have him bat 2nd.

  287. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 10:30 pm

Attendance reported at 31,445. How do you think that compares with the other games today?

  288. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 10:30 pm

    Mac-

CC, AP, and Kuroda all know how to pitch.

They can win, or at least keep the Team in the game even w/o their best stuff.

Hughes and Nova can go to school with these guys around.

And all the BP guys are luckier than sin to have a chance to hear the words of his Mo-ness.

    :)

  289. ZachA April 25th, 2013 at 10:34 pm

    April 2012
Robinson Cano: 1 HR, 4 RBI, .267 BA

  290. jmills April 25th, 2013 at 10:36 pm

I’m almost glad I have work concerns at the moment. Congrats, Yankee fans.

LOL. Leafs fan from NYC on the local phone in show tonight.

  291. Tackelberry April 25th, 2013 at 10:41 pm

Itsgonnabealongseaon disappeared quickly after Cano’s homer didn’t he.

  292. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 10:43 pm

I guess Chad is sworn to secrecy on Mustelier.

I’ve asked him at least twice for an update to no avail.

    :(

  293. jmills April 25th, 2013 at 10:43 pm

” 10 bedtime habits ruining your restful sleep ” – arguably, one of them should’ve been lying down 9-14

  294. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 10:43 pm

Have you written to him, MTU?

  295. jacksquat April 25th, 2013 at 10:43 pm

You can see attendance for today’s completed games here:

  296. blake April 25th, 2013 at 10:46 pm

    Nice win today.

Cano is typically a slow starter and a guy that turns it on as it warms up….that he’s off to such a hot start makes him a great early favorite for MVP

  297. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 10:47 pm

No Nick. I thought posting a polite request here constituted the same thing.

Perhaps he really has nothing on him ?

I won’t be around for the chat tomorrow but maybe someone will ask then ?

I’d be glad to designate you as my Proxy for the chat.

    :)

  298. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 10:48 pm

    Blake-

Haven’t you felt for some time that Robbie had a batting crown or two in him ?

    I know I have.

    ;)

  299. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 10:49 pm

I don’t think Chad reads all the comments here, MTU, so polite as your requests may be, he might not be seeing them. Also, there may be no new information. I’d like to know about Mutelier’s status too, and even more so I’d like to know if it even matters.

  300. Jerkface April 25th, 2013 at 10:50 pm

Cano is typically a slow starter and a guy that turns it on as it warms up….that he’s off to such a hot start makes him a great early favorite for MVP

Yea but he also had that year where he was batting .400 at the end of April. Ended up hitting ‘only’ .307 .372 .497 .869 the rest of the way :) I’d love for Cano to finally win his batting title… Everyone says he has the talent to do it but he hasn’t actually gotten close outside of his 2nd year.

  301. luis April 25th, 2013 at 10:51 pm

    MTU,

He always respondes to e-mails… You should write to him…

  302. j9d April 25th, 2013 at 10:51 pm

So folks, any thoughts on Justin Pugh, OT from Syracuse who is supposed to be a great pocket protector? I’m pretty sure Eli likes it.

  303. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 10:52 pm

    Good point Nick.

Perhaps you can ask him in the Chat tomorrow for us ?

Unfortunately I cannot be around at that time.

I’d appreciate it. Others probably would too.

    ;)

  304. luis April 25th, 2013 at 10:53 pm

*responds to e-mails* Sorry for the Spanglish there ;)

    Good night all

  305. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 10:54 pm

    Luis-

If Nick or someone else does not get the needed response tomorrow I will be glad to do that.

Tomorrow is a fairly busy day for me otherwise I’d ask him.

I don’t know if you will be in on the chat ?

  306. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 10:55 pm

j9d, there was a lot of excitement about the Pugh pick:

    Dulce Suenos Luis.

  308. blake April 25th, 2013 at 10:57 pm

“Yea but he also had that year where he was batting .400 at the end of April. Ended up hitting ”

Yea but he usually starts slow and heats up….nothing is guaranteed but you have to like how he’s swinging it….

    MTU,

    Yea I do…..

  309. blake April 25th, 2013 at 10:58 pm

    Night all….lets win another tomorrow

  310. luis April 25th, 2013 at 11:00 pm

    MTU,

    I don’t think I will…But if I am, I will ask for you and me ;)

    GN my friend

  311. j9d April 25th, 2013 at 11:00 pm

Hilarious, Nick. I need to start following you now.

  312. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 11:02 pm

    Luis-

    Thanks.

    I’m punching out too.

    See ya’ on the sunnyside.

  313. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 11:05 pm

    All are welcome.

  314. MTU April 25th, 2013 at 11:15 pm

For those of you that are interested.

    I just e-mailed Chad about Mustelier’s status.

He said that he just got into his first extended ST game this Monday.

    He played 3 innings.

No idea when he will join SWB.

Also, Chad said that the info. was posted on the Blog 3 days ago. Obviously I missed it.

    Night all.

  315. Nick in SF April 25th, 2013 at 11:19 pm

That’s already old information. We want new information!

  316. jacksquat April 25th, 2013 at 11:27 pm

Cano is probably sacrificing a little avg for power. If he concentrated on avg only he could probably hit .370+.
