Yankees pregame: Youkilis waits; Cervi talks; Collins comes out

Posted by: Brian Heyman - Posted in Misc on Apr 29, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Kevin Youkilis played Saturday after six games off, woke up Sunday not feeling so hot and sat out, and indicated Monday his lower back was feeling the same as before he returned, which meant stiff. So he’s sitting out again. The Yankees missed out on a chance to backdate him to April 21 if the DL is in his future. Youkilis said he was waiting on the results of his MRI today.

Joe Girardi wasn’t second-guessing himself over playing Youkilis Saturday.

“The player told us he was ready to go and we put him in,” Girardi said. “I can’t tell you how he reinjured it.” …

Francisco Cervelli stood in front of his locker, bandage on his surgically repaired broken right hand, arm in a sling. Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser operated Saturday after Cervelli took a foul tip off the back of the hand Friday night.

“I don’t know if they put another finger there,” Cervelli joked. “But the doctor said it was really good. I think a little plate there is going to help to heal quicker. But I trust Dr. Rosenwasser because he did my surgery in 2008. I got two screws there. Now I got another plate there. It’s a good hand. I’m a robot now.”

Cervelli is hoping to be back in less than six weeks.

“Today is five weeks and five days,” Cervelli said. “I’m counting. Tomorrow is four days. I’ve got to stay positive. … The last two days, there was a lot of pain. But today I feel a little better.”

Jason Collins made history today, becoming the first active athlete in the four major North American professional sports to come out as gay.

“It’s good for him,” CC Sabathia said. “He can be honest and not have to live a lie, I guess.”

That’s the NBA. Is MLB ready if one of its players wants to do the same?

“Sure,” Sabathia said. “Why not? … I don’t know what it would be like. It would be tough, but you’d have to deal with it, I guess.”

Joe Girardi said: “No matter what it is in our world, any time it happens for the first time, it’s a little bit of a shock. But I believe baseball would handle it well.”

If it happened in the Yankees’ clubhouse, that player would find a comforting presence in Girardi.

“As far as myself personally, and everyone is not going to believe with my religious beliefs, I believe as men and women, we’re called to love others, depending on their race, their religion, their thought process, whatever they do,” Girardi said. “We’re not called to judge people. I think part of judging people is probably what gets us into a lot of trouble in the world.

“So as far as me personally, he’s a player; he’s a man. My job is to be his friend and love him. And if I was his manager, it’s to get the most out of him. I always felt as a player, it was to be the best teammate that I could be. And that’s the bottom line.”

I will say this: Joe Girardi is a very decent Man. A good Man.

    :)

  2. Niblick April 29th, 2013 at 5:15 pm

Wow. Joe Girardi calls Youklis “the player”. That’s pretty rude, given that he calls everyone else by their oh so cute nicknamies.

  3. bruceb April 29th, 2013 at 5:18 pm

Could it be he’s a little angry with Youk for returning when his back was no better, thus denying the Yanks the opportunity to back-date his DL stint?

  4. MTU April 29th, 2013 at 5:21 pm

Alot of the Band-aide Brigade have been walking injuries for quite some time.

Unfortunately, it would not surprise me to see more of it.

Mike is now comparing gays like Ellen and Martina.
    This has potential…

  6. yankeefeminista April 29th, 2013 at 5:22 pm

Aye, aye, Joe Girardi. Good man.

As for the Joe-Youk quote, unsure what the context was, but I doubt that Joe would intentionally diss Youk.

  7. yankeefeminista April 29th, 2013 at 5:23 pm

Groan. The Charlotte milb cameras in the SWB game are terrible. So much for watching the SWB games today and tomorrow.

  8. mick April 29th, 2013 at 5:24 pm

So what’s the big deal if they missed out on the retroactive DL for Youk?
Just do it now and let him heal…

  9. tomingeorgia April 29th, 2013 at 5:26 pm

    Mister MTU,

Back in the day, there were a few good soldiers we knew were gay, and they covered my back as I did theirs. GB7, bless his soul, would say the same. Who cares?

Did you see my post about the Texas ladies in the last thread?

  10. mick April 29th, 2013 at 5:28 pm

    mr tom

thats 3 toilet rolls apiece for the texas girls…what did you feed them?

  11. bruceb April 29th, 2013 at 5:28 pm

Just do it now and let him heal…

Don’t think that’s going to happen. As those who have back problems will know, it comes and it goes. There is no cure.

    Exactly, who cares?

Similarly, I don’t see the need for anyone to announce their sexuality to the public. Do you see heterosexuals coming out and announcing their heterosexuality?

  19. mick April 29th, 2013 at 5:37 pm

The four Texas ladies left today after four days. 16 double rolls of toilet paper, 20 bananas, five pounds of grapes,

  44. tomingeorgia April 29th, 2013 at 5:58 pm

    MTU,
The things you learn about people in this business, it being truly up close and personal, would amaze you. Everything changes day to day. These Texas ladies were amazing consumers of fruit, toilet paper and food. Were they with their husbands, the pattern would be different. I’ve been in the business long enough to know that Ladies outings require more of the above than husband/wife outings. The nature of the trade.

  45. MTU April 29th, 2013 at 5:59 pm

Like I said before. It’s proof that do everything bigger in Texas.

Even when they are visiting another State.

I had the Matsui scoop long before today, a Lohud exclusive!

Youk playing 1 game then immediately going back on the shelf highlights the Yankees terrible roster management. They could have backdated his DL a week but by playing him they lost that option. So they are once again playing with 24 guys.

They always do this. I’m really glad the team is playing so well as a unit to cover a dumb misstep like that.

MG brought this up on saturday maybe but I couldnt really post as I was tooling around NYC but Vernon Wells has shown a pretty drastic change in approach. He is walking at a nice clip and going solidly opposite field with much more frequency than he ever did before. I don’t like the cost, but he is looking like a good pickup. His defense has also been much better than I saw in LAA and the later years of TOR (when he was a CF in name only).

The true big pickup tho is Hafner. Compare hafner with tex if tex ever comes back, both are deadpull from the left side but Hafner’s stroke is much simpler and devastating than Tex. Tex is going to loft balls that get over the fence but Hafner is going to hit blistering line drives that just never come down. He is able to beat the shift by going center to right with line drives and hard contact. Its why Hafner, even dilapidated, can be a .280 hitter and Tex cannot.

  48. MTU April 29th, 2013 at 6:01 pm

    Tom-

If the Husbands were along would it have been steak, booze, and TP ?

  49. mick April 29th, 2013 at 6:01 pm

Mr Tom….here’s a marketing idea….sponsor a contest with all the fruit and t-paper you can consume….there will be lines out the door….that’s where the pay toilets would come in.

    ====

As a fourth outfielder, he is pricey. However, if he OPSes at .830 for the season, then he replaces Swisher’s production, and winds up being quite a bargain. Moreover, he might free the Yanks to move Granderson, underscoring his value to the club.

  57. MTU April 29th, 2013 at 6:08 pm

Ok. If you meant to say chimps I can see your point.

Many chimps could equal 1 gorilla in production. Perhaps even exceed.

Betances 6K through three, five swinging, sitting 94. :D 1 BB, (leadoff, followed by WP and 3 straight Ks), 3 hits, 1 2B and only ball to leave infield, other two were weak grounders to third.

SWB just took 2-1 lead as Cody Johnson doubles home Adams.

Supposedly ball’s carrying well today but Cojo homered in this game as he continues to flash power. He also just singled (and then got thrown out) in a pair.

If he can actually play a reasonable 1B he gains a viability he couldn’t pull off at second or third.

    Ghost,

His uppercut swing makes it almost impossible for him to shorten it up… He is a lost cause, in no small part because of his inability to correct it…

Four **** sake, they’re pulling Betances in the fourth because he’s loaded the bases, even though he’s a groundball from getting out of it and the No. 9 hitter’s coming to the plate.

Will they ever let these kids pitch through trouble? He got out of “trouble” twice already in this game.

Ghostwriter, it’s the knowledge that he is. I guess you can say they’re just going to have to learn to live with it, and maybe that’s the way it plays out, but you can also understand the discomfort of a heterosexual person who does not want to undress or shower in front of a homosexual person. That’s being real.

Maybe I’m overthinking it (who me?) and maybe it won’t bother any of his teammates – wherever he may end up next year.

As long as Collins is as respectful of others’ sensibilities as he would like others to be of his, there shouldn’t be a problem. After this has no direct impact on any of his potential teammates. I guess that I could imagine a hard case making a big deal about it, but given where the culture is, I suspect that likelihood is rather remote.

EDIT: After all, this has no direct impact on any of his potential teammates.

That probably says it all. And I have no reason to think that he wouldn’t be. And if there is any initial discomfort, that kind of respect would help it to dissipate quickly, I would think.

Very well said by Girardi. He is a good man. Not to mention he is doing a heck of a job.
