Romine aiming to prove himself with Yankees

Posted by: Brian Heyman - Posted in Misc on Apr 30, 2013 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Austin Romine’s season debut with the Yankees didn’t go so well Monday night in the 9-1 loss to the Astros. The rookie catcher went 0 for 3 and got hit by a pitch. And he and Andy Pettitte struggled to get on the same page with Pettitte not able to locate his signature cutter. But Romine will get other chances with Francisco Cervelli down for at least six weeks. He wants to make a statement when he does.

“Any time you can get a chance to show them what you can do, it’s huge,” Romine said before the game. “So I’m going to take however long I’m here and do the best I can to show them I can handle it up here and I can do it.”

This is the player Baseball America named as the organization’s best defensive catcher following each of the last three seasons. The publication rated him No. 3 in arm strength among high school catchers in the 2007 draft, when the Yankees took him in the second round. But he has to prove he can contribute both ways up here.

“I think he can play at this level,” Joe Girardi said.

Romine only had a .158 average to show for the last time he was up, September of 2011. But that nine-game experience made him more comfortable for this sequel.

“Being here before, knowing what to expect, having caught a lot of these pitchers, it’s going to make that transition that much smoother and easier,” Romine said. “I have relationships with these pitchers. There are only a couple of guys I haven’t caught. So I’m looking forward to reconnecting with them and getting on the same page with what they’re doing this year.”

Here’s the link to my full feature story today on Romine, plus a link to my story on Pettitte’s difficult night and one to my Yankees notebook with items on Kevin Youkilis’ continued back problem, Cervelli and reaction to Jason Collins coming out.

Last night was just a clunker all the way around….you’ll have a few of those every season and they can come even against teams like Houston.

Turn the page and win today…..

  2. MTU April 30th, 2013 at 9:19 am

Betcha’ you learned something last night Austin.

That when a Pitcher doesn’t have his usual stuff you need to have a plan B, and even a plan C to deal w those times.

Sometimes even those things won’t work.

It’ll come. Unlike some you’ll have a fair shot to show what you can do.

    ;)

  3. astrocityfan April 30th, 2013 at 9:20 am

i think romine has what it tales to be successful. Time will tell but he seems to have a great attitude. He also fits Girardi’s defense first mindset which should give him a little more room to fail than others might have.

  4. blake April 30th, 2013 at 9:20 am

Andy just didn’t have it last night….everything was up and in the middle of the plate when it was a strike. I’m sure throwing to a new catcher didn’t help but it’s not Romine’s fault really…..just a bad game.

  5. MTU April 30th, 2013 at 9:21 am

    My first look at Nuno.

He got in trouble but he showed some grit.

    I’d like to see more.

  6. Bo knows April 30th, 2013 at 9:25 am

I’m afraid that, as I said before, the Cervelli injury tipped this team over. Romine didn’t look bad, basically looked as expected. But the Yankees needed that Cervelli overproduction to compete. They are so reliant on the pitching that it’s paramount that they are comfortable.

As stated before by others, the more Nix plays the more he is exposed. Last night he’d take the first pitch down the middle and then swing at the next, whatever the location. Youk can be depended on to produce quality at bats so the lingering back problems shorten up the lineup even more.

  7. MTU April 30th, 2013 at 9:26 am

    Blake-

Was not blaming Romine as much as saying that you learn more from failure than success.

The more you work w a Pitcher the better you get to know them. That’s common sense.

With Andy not having his usual degree of command and stuff it’s remotely possible that if Romine knew him better that a way to control some of the early damage could have been found.

Then again AP was missing his spots by a mile so maybe not.

Every team has it’s share of clunkers and last night certainly was one.

Object now is just to get back on the path and win the series.

  8. MTU April 30th, 2013 at 9:31 am

They were pumping Beckett full of epidurals season before last.

It worked for his bad back. they got him thru the season.

Maybe it will work for Youkilis.

I’d give him more playing time at 1st though. And plenty of rest days.

I’m OK if they DL him cause I want to see Adams/Mustelier.

  9. RadioKev April 30th, 2013 at 9:31 am

Romine looked pretty good back there as far as his receiving skills go.

  10. Doc Iac April 30th, 2013 at 9:33 am

Last night sucked, but Hamilton’s 0-8 makes it a little easier to bare

  11. MTU April 30th, 2013 at 9:33 am

    Kev-

He did. But game calling and knowing your pitchers are an important facet of the game too.

    It’ll come w more experience.

  12. RadioKev April 30th, 2013 at 9:36 am

    MTU,

Yeah, absolutely. That’s something most guys have to learn along the way, it seems.

Pettitte certainly deserves some of the blame last night too, he was not sharp at all.

  13. J. Alfred Prufrock April 30th, 2013 at 9:37 am

I hope Joel Sherman is right that Adams is close to being brought up.

He seems to have his finger on the pulse, so perhaps there’s some substance, there. Meanwhile, Joseph continues to be worked out at 1B.

  14. austinmac April 30th, 2013 at 9:37 am

My belief is steroid injections typically provide temporary relief. They do not treat the underlying cause.

  15. MTU April 30th, 2013 at 9:39 am

    Kev-

Not even a matter of blaming anyone.

AP just didn’t have it last night. He was due for one. It happens to all of them once in a while.

He made Romine’s job more difficult. No question.

  16. RadioKev April 30th, 2013 at 9:40 am

    I want to blame!

  17. J. Alfred Prufrock April 30th, 2013 at 9:40 am

What I really think is that Adams and Joseph, who are likely, from the FO standpoint, still in the “experimental” phase of their new positions (more so, obviously, Joseph) are working deep in the mine as emergency guys whose already advanced hitting will get them a callup if the need is dire.

But that the bottom would have to drop out of guys like Overbay (and Youkilis’ health) to actually have them come up. In the mean, they’re getting more and more experience on the corners for when/if the “need” arises.

  18. MTU April 30th, 2013 at 9:41 am

    Mac-

    Of course not. I agree.

They are merely a palliative not a cure.

But they can help to buy time.

Maybe a guy gets the surgery or whatever in the OS instead ?

  19. J. Alfred Prufrock April 30th, 2013 at 9:42 am

I believe Adams also had an epidural for his back, but he seems to have recovered well enough. Probably doesn’t hurt to be 25 years old.

  20. blake April 30th, 2013 at 9:44 am

“As stated before by others, the more Nix plays the more he is exposed. Last night he’d take the first pitch down the middle and then swing at the next, whatever the location.”

yea he’s gonna be….he’s not an everyday guy.

    MTU,

    I know.

  21. MTU April 30th, 2013 at 9:44 am

    JAP-

I wouldn’t mind seeing what Adams can do for a couple of weeks.

Same for Ronnnier when he is ready.

I wish they’d get more time like Romine but that’s not likely in the cards.

  22. blake April 30th, 2013 at 9:45 am

I don’t know how sustainable the production they have gotten thus far from the offense is……it’s been interesting and fun to watch so far but can Wells and Hafner OPS over .900 all year? They are probably going to need a bat at the deadline if they want a title shot.

  23. J. Alfred Prufrock April 30th, 2013 at 9:47 am

    MTU,

They’ve not got much choice in Romine’s case, and we know that’s the only way anyone gets “more time” with these guys.

Nix’s over-use is an example of how the Yankees push guys beyond their true functionality just to avoid the “untested” options.

  24. J. Alfred Prufrock April 30th, 2013 at 9:49 am

MTU, I don’t think Mustelier is quite back playing yet.

  25. MTU April 30th, 2013 at 9:49 am

    Blake-

Can Hafner and Wells stay healthy that long ?

Obviously Youkilis can’t. He’s already gone down.

How much will Granderson help ?

    Will Tex need surgery ?

    Lot’s of unanswered questions.

Hafner honestly might if he stays healthy. Him and Yankee Stadium should be best friends. I could see Wells staying in the .800s.

Chad said Ronnier was playing in extended ST games.

He has yet to appear at SWB so it might take a while.

I want to see deserving youngsters given more of a shot by design. Not just by accident.

  28. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 9:53 am

    - AS I SAID -

    (1) NO Youk, NO offense. Yanks can plug the numerous holes and make do. That’s NOT the case with Youkilis in the middle of the order.

    (2) Shoulda jumped on Casper Wells when Seattle threw him on the scrap heap. Better late than never with Oakland.

    (3) You gotta guy doing a modern-day Tommy John out there with the Endless ground balls, and you Refuse to start runners and create holes for those ground balls? Girardi is DUMB.

    (4) NO way Romine catches\CALLS the next Pettitte start. Pettitte was a bobble-head doll last night, which Ruined his rhythmn.

  29. MTU April 30th, 2013 at 9:56 am

    Hike day today.

    Catch you all later.

    :)

  30. blake April 30th, 2013 at 9:57 am

“Hafner honestly might if he stays healthy. Him and Yankee Stadium should be best friends. I could see Wells staying in the .800s.”

yea if Hafner stays healthy and is played mostly against RHP then he’ll mash all year I think…..I also think Vern could settle out into the .800′s somewhere and maybe that’ll be good enough if they can get Jeter and Tex back and they pitch really well……Youk concerns me though because he just has become so brittle……they really need to look for other 3B options up to the deadline.

  31. blake April 30th, 2013 at 9:58 am

I guess Alex hypothetically will be back sometime but he’s not even on my radar at this point…..and honestly I still think he’s played his last game as a Yankee.

  32. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 9:58 am

The Yankees sucking up the TEX insurance $$$, is like a guy on welfare. The Yankees will NOT send TEX back to work, until they Absolutely have to.

  33. Tackelberry April 30th, 2013 at 10:02 am

    DonnyBrook:

    1) Agree on that one, unless Adams or Musty gets the call and gets a shot.
    2) Disagree. Wells has been DFAed by 2 teams already this season for a reason.
    3) Maybe, but its tough to justify starting runners when you’re 5 runs down. Yanks were swinging and missing alot too, so what if the batter doesn’t make contact and the runner gets thrown out down 5runs? Looks even worse.

    4) Disagree totally. You don’t give up on Romine with a certain pitcher after 1 start. Makes no sense. What if Romine happens to be the starter at some point? They have to work together in side sesssions on signs and getting on the same page.

  34. blake April 30th, 2013 at 10:02 am

Nunez is getting exposed a little too…..pitchers have a book on him now and the reports seem to be to bust him inside with fastballs then slop him away and get him to chase…..it’s working.

Nunez has some bat speed but his swing is a little on the long side and it’s hurting him now that pitchers are controlling his bat speed…..

  35. Jerkface April 30th, 2013 at 10:05 am

    2) Disagree. Wells has been DFAed by 2 teams already this season for a reason.

He hit .267 .364 .527 .891 vs lefties last year, .260 .349 .490 .838 the year before. He just needs strict platooning and is better than ben francisco.

  36. Russell Munson April 30th, 2013 at 10:12 am

“They were pumping Beckett full of epidurals season before last.

It worked for his bad back. they got him thru the season.

Maybe it will work for Youkilis.”

Tough to compare a guy who plays once every 5 days with someone you’d want to play at least 5 days a week.

This was always the risk with Youkilis. They should just stop messing around and give Adams his chance.

Giving Adams a chance now may also make it easier to work out a DFA and re-sign with other players going forward should it need to be done.

  37. blake April 30th, 2013 at 10:14 am

“He hit .267 .364 .527 .891 vs lefties last year, .260 .349 .490 .838 the year before. He just needs strict platooning and is better than ben francisco.”

yea….I think a big question though is is he better than one of the LH hitting outfielders they have now overall? When Granderson comes back should Wells continue to play every day or be platooned? I think right now the answer is he should continue to play every day….

  38. Bo knows April 30th, 2013 at 10:15 am

Nunez has some bat speed but his swing is a little on the long side and it’s hurting him now that pitchers are controlling his bat speed…..

I’ts a strange swing. I can’t see how he gets from there to here. It’s like his bat is too heavy or too long.

  39. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 10:15 am

Comparing ANY team and their 25 Man Roster to the Yankees 25 Man, is foolish.

  40. RadioKev April 30th, 2013 at 10:16 am

Two teams have already tried forcing Ichiro on me in separate fantasy leagues. I think we all know who’s getting bumped when Grandy comes back.

That’s good that he’s back in action.

Yeah, that’s kinda/sorta my position, too. Thus my ongoing lament about the exits of three young players who could be helping this team right now. I can’t really feel much excitement about players who have no future with this team, like not even a 2014 future.

The problem is that youth is anathema to these guys. It nearly always takes something unplanned (“by accident” if you will) to get them up here. Then, it’s sink or swim, and very little comfort curve.

Among other reasons, that is primary to my wishing to see these people replaced.

  42. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 10:19 am

We have Always had guys raggin’ Nunez for his glove, and Now we got guys raggin’ Nunez for his bat. Place ALL employment applications at the office of Headmaster Brian Cashman.

  43. ron April 30th, 2013 at 10:20 am

I have to agree about stewart catching pettitte next time out.
Girardi is going to be more concerned about pettitte being comfortable before anything else, even if it was not romines fault.
Bottom line is,pettitte, and romine did not do well together, and girardi is going to nip that immediately.

  44. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 10:20 am

Ichiro in Fantasy, is FAR different than reality. Depends on scoring categories also.

  45. ac1 April 30th, 2013 at 10:21 am

I think getting hit in the hand twice has messed up Nunez’s swing/power. I agree he needs a day or two off, meaning get Adams up here to play 3B and let Nix play SS for a couple days, then put him back in the utility role.

  46. RadioKev April 30th, 2013 at 10:22 am

Maybe Ichiro can turn it around, but at this point I’d say he has less upside than Gardner, Granderson, and Wells. As in, sure you can wait for him, but why would you when we have the other options?

  47. blake April 30th, 2013 at 10:22 am

“I’ts a strange swing. I can’t see how he gets from there to here. It’s like his bat is too heavy or too long.”

yea his hands look quick but the bat kinda drags…..he needs to shorten his path to the ball.

“We have Always had guys raggin’ Nunez for his glove, and Now we got guys raggin’ Nunez for his bat. Place ALL employment applications at the office of Headmaster Brian Cashman.”

if he’s catching the ball at SS then I’ll live with his offense…..but Cashman was most likely correct in his comments about Nunie (even though they were in good taste)…..he’s not some dynamo hitter like he’s been made out to be by some. His minor league track record is so so and so is his big league one when you look at the total sample. I’ve said since last year that if he played every day I was afraid he’d get exposed because of his approach……

  48. Bo knows April 30th, 2013 at 10:23 am

For sure Nunez getting hit a couple of times didn’t help matters. He stroked a nice single last night so maybe he’s getting some strength back.

  49. blake April 30th, 2013 at 10:24 am

when Granderson comes back the OF should really be Grandy, Gardner, Wells…..but they’ll probably platoon Wells and keep playing the lefties every day vs RHP. I guess thats fine if Ichiro starts to hit…..but even if he does he’s not going to match the production that Vern is giving right now.

  50. J. Alfred Prufrock April 30th, 2013 at 10:24 am

Nunez has a whippy, quick bat, but he just chases like crazy. Still rather see a young guy hitting .169 (79 PA) who I know has some batspeed and can steal bases and who is playing a good SS for us, then a guy who may not be ancient, but who has a .648 career OPS over 6-plus seasons and has no upside. Because that’s the choice facing this team. I’ll tolerate Nunez’s growing pains.

  51. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 10:25 am

To me, the Score should Never dictate what a team does offensively. As a Mgr, you should do whatever you feel gives you the best chance to score runs. The number of outs left in the game IS a consideration, but Never the score. If you let the score dictate what you do or do Not do, your tieing your teams offensive hands behind it. Self inflicted offensive paralysis.

  52. comnsnse April 30th, 2013 at 10:27 am

Desperate times apparently require desperate discussions about retreads, injuries, aging stars and prospects who remain suspects.

I do not envy the writer who actually has to post something to stimulate the blog base.

Of course it seem there is no shortage of posting about all those same subjects.

Could it be too many of us are leading too insular lives ….or just need more friends? ;)

  53. J. Alfred Prufrock April 30th, 2013 at 10:28 am

Nunez has talent but a bad approach. He has been hurt, too. He’s the best young talent currently on the ML club, which doesn’t speak well for Brian Cashman, but it is what it is.

Kevin Long needs to help him work it out.

  54. comnsnse April 30th, 2013 at 10:29 am

As if to conform my last post, Nunez is here for the duration.

They have no options either in the minors or on the trade front!

  55. J. Alfred Prufrock April 30th, 2013 at 10:29 am

um, could be that we’re Yankee fans discussing the team we root for. How’s that for a leap.

  56. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 10:30 am

As I have said before, Nunez swings the stick like it’s Top heavy, which may be the case due to using a Very heavy bat. His swing reminds me a Lot of Soriano, who does use an Extremely heavy piece of lumber.

  57. comnsnse April 30th, 2013 at 10:32 am

Pru, be serious, are you actually buying into this Long can change anything with major league players?

If so tell him to work on Tex and Grandy who we have serious money invested in with a questionable rate of return! ;)

  58. blake April 30th, 2013 at 10:33 am

I think Nunez is a little gun shy on inside pitches….can’t blame him….and I agree that he does swing like he uses a heavy bat…..maybe Chad can check in to that and see if it’s true.

  59. ron April 30th, 2013 at 10:34 am

Cervelli is that kind of scrappy player that when you lose him,it is going to hurt this team.
Don’t know what it is,but he is good enough offensively, and more than fine on defense.
Matter of fact,he was more than good enough offensively,so far.
With cervelli, and youk out of the lineup,it changes things dramatically, and if wells, haffner slow down,it could get ugly.

  60. RadioKev April 30th, 2013 at 10:36 am

Can Chad also ask what the deal is with Gardner and stolen bases? Does Girardi not want him running in front of Cano? My fantasy team needs to know.

  61. comnsnse April 30th, 2013 at 10:36 am

Pru@10.29, exactly….but the volume given we’re 25 games into the season and the interminable chatter about this roster and it’s shortcomings leads one to posit that either there are a lot of retirees here or folks with too much time!

None the less when the subject is interesting I’ll be chiming in as well since I am retired and it’s too early for lunch! ;)

  62. J. Alfred Prufrock April 30th, 2013 at 10:37 am

I don’t know if he can help Nunez ultimately, he has to be able to incorporate hitting advice received and self-assess, know how to add and subtract at a “feel” level.

Long did a nice job with Granderson in 2010 against LHP and definitely deserves some credit for helping a 24 year-old Melky Cabrera progress his right-handed swing. Melky had good swing mechanics to start with, but Long definitely helped him.

  63. Russell Munson April 30th, 2013 at 10:39 am

I think Nunez will hit enough for a shortstop if the Yankees are patient with him, but agree his approach needs some work. I do think it’s cool the Yankees have shown some patience with him and his struggles, although that could be because they really don’t have any other options with Jayson Nix the only other shortstop on the roster being the starting third baseman.

  64. Russell Munson April 30th, 2013 at 10:39 am

Put it another way, if Youkilis was healthy and playing third would we be seeing Jayson Nix starting at shortstop?

  65. RadioKev April 30th, 2013 at 10:40 am

Cervelli is the kind of player that was bound to come back to earth before his injury. He is not a 142 wRC+ player.

  66. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 10:43 am

If your looking for SB’s in Fantasy, go the platoon route, and get Rajai Davis, and Craig Gentry. Waiting on Gardner to steal you some bases, will NOT result in your getting a Yoohoo Bath at seasons end.

  67. blake April 30th, 2013 at 10:47 am

can adams play a decent 3b?

  70. ac1 April 30th, 2013 at 10:53 am

Kevin Long needs to help him work it out.
    ___

    He is working with him…
He split his legs further apart in his stance.
I think as Nunez’s hand recovers, so will his offense.

  71. ac1 April 30th, 2013 at 10:54 am

I think what annoys me about the team more than anything is that they constantly have to play without a full 25 man roster. When someone is hurt, if they need to miss more than 1-2 days, just DL them. It feels like we are always at least 1 man short on the bench because someone is dealing with a ‘day to day’ injury.

  72. ac1 April 30th, 2013 at 10:55 am

There is where I part from stats people. Players evolve and develop even at the Majors level. I tend to go with quality at bats as a marker and Cervelli was very encouraging. Defensively, it was night and day back there. He looked professional and in control of his emotions.

Cervelli will be the classic “regression towards the mean” case. The only thing is, when it happens, some people are going to blame it on the hand. It’s not the hand.

Not to say I haven’t enjoyed his contributions, and that he hasn’t improved defensively. He just can’t keep that up.

  76. blake April 30th, 2013 at 11:19 am

I think Cervelli could be a .750 or so OPS bat and that’s not bad for a catcher really…..

  77. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 11:23 am

What bugs me is people patting Cashman on the back for the retreads, 3 WEEKS INTO THE SEASON. Yet, there are holes within the 25 Man, you can drive a truck through. Most are just looking at the Won vs Loss record. DUMB.

  78. yankee21 April 30th, 2013 at 11:24 am

I think Cervelli could be a .260-.270 hitter and with his ability to foul off pitches and take pitches be a .340-.350 OBP guy. He should also be at least adequate defensively. Although not AS caliber numbers, Cervelli would add value.

  79. blake April 30th, 2013 at 11:26 am

if Cashman was told…..make us a winning team but don’t spend any long term money……then it’s not on him and this may have been the best he could do.

  82. PacoDooley April 30th, 2013 at 11:45 am

MLBTR has a piece on upcoming FA pitchers – made me think that, if Hughes can continue to be the guy he has been in the last few starts (which could make sense given that he missed all that time in Sprint Training), he could actually land quite a large contract.

This thought is motivated by all of the TV money pumping into markets like LA and Phili. Could Hughes get $80M? I have to believe he will get at least 60 over 5 years as a minimum if he looks good the rest of the season. He is young and that means he has little competition on the market.

The NYY should either re-sign him or make him a qualifying offer since he would be stupid to take one.

  83. ac1 April 30th, 2013 at 11:46 am

They aren’t going to put Tex on the 60 because they are convinced he will come back before June 1. I don’t believe it but they do. Stupid! At best, it is very late May (a couple days).

could DFA Francisco, 60 day Tex and open two spots.

  84. randy l. April 30th, 2013 at 11:54 am

i’m making wooden pedestals today for a business expansion . some new work is coming in and i need more pedestals. pedestals cost a couple of hundred dollars each if you buy them, so i make them from plywood i get at home depot. it costs about $30 instead of $200 this way. they look great when painted in the finished gallery space.

i’m putting them together outside in the sun on my back porch area. it’s actually quite enjoyable to be working with my hands and seeing the right angles of the cubes going together after cutting them out a few months ago.

my business is a combination of hands on like this and then a whole lot of thinking in other areas like taxes , accounting, sales, etc., but spending time doing hands on stuff really is as important as the thinking stuff. the two go together.

what does this have to do with baseball? well, we tend to reduce baseball to a score and then to stats for the team and each player. we also do the numbers that involve money, payments to players, 189 numbers, etc. . numbers are of course a thinking thing, here’s the deal.

you don’t want to have too many people who have never made a box in charge of people making the boxes. one reason is that it’s actually fun to make a box/pedestal and people who have never done it don’t get the joy of doing it.

on the other hand you also don’t want to have people who can only make boxes because they don’t really understand why they are making the boxes. what you want is people who get it both in a hands on and a thinking way.

baseball is really no different. much of the game is hands on. probably the most enjoyable aspect of it.
too much thinking only about the game for people on a blog or in management misses much of the game. it also creates a siuation where the thinkers are too much removed from the doing. they really don’t get what the doing is anymore even if they once did.

just a passing observation for those who see what i’m getting at here.

  85. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 11:55 am

The “$189 Edict” has been out there for awhile. Cashman’s wake in an effort to meet that, has resulted in FAILEd deals like the Montero trade. The “retread route” is the result of the cupboard being Currently bare in the Minors as to MLB ready players. Cashman should be Canned at the end of his contract.

  86. Cashmoney April 30th, 2013 at 11:55 am

just flip a coin between Eppley or Ben if you need a roster spot, the decision is really not that agonizing consider one can’t hit , the other operates with a decent major league sinker in the high 80s with bouts of inconsistent command. Both are replacement type of players.

NO. We have real needs so the first spot needs to go to Adams.

I sincerely hope Francisco and Eppley are not keeping the team from bringing up someone else to play 3B. I agree with Cashmoney. They are both replacement level players, if that.

Nix is fine as a once or twice a week replacement. He simply cannot play every day. I have seen only a little of Adams, but he has been considered a very good prospect, before injuries, and has hit. He goes the other way quite nicely. I find it hard to believe he wouldn’t outhit Nix.

  92. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 12:07 pm

Yanks are trying to drag out TEX’s Insurance $$$, and throwing him onto the 60 Day DL, would have the insurance company Howling. “I’ts a strange swing. I can’t see how he gets from there to here. It’s like his bat is too heavy or too long.”

yea his hands look quick but the bat kinda drags…..he needs to shorten his path to the ball.

The other night they were talking about how they had widened Nunez’ stance because it had become narrow compared to previous years. His stride became longer and his bat was lagging. This was 2 or 3 games ago, so maybe he needs time to adjust to the new stance.

  98. DONNYBROOK April 30th, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Donny, how exactly is the Montero trade a failure? Pineda and Campos both have huge upside and haven’t even thrown a pitch as yet as Yankees and Montero has been very average in Seattle.

I totally agree with ac about those 2 moves opening up roster spots; to me, that’s a no-brainer.

  113. blake April 30th, 2013 at 12:24 pm

Montero isn’t making adjustments…..he’s still very young so he might yet but you’d like to see some progression by now. He has the physical talent…the swing and bat speed to be a really good big league hitter……but the mental component is huge in the big leagues and often separates who makes it and who doesn’t and that part is really tough to gauge until they actually face big league pitching.

I still think Montero can become a good big league hitter…..but given that he has really no other skills other than hitting he really has to do that to have value.

A change of scenery and reboot may be what he needs…..

Does Tex get flooded on Twitter with pleadings from fans urging him to come back quickly? Because I don’t think I’ve even gotten a hint of fans clamoring for him to come to the Yankees rescue yet.

When he talks about his return it’s with this air of urgency like be patient with me. Who is being impatient exactly?

I haven’t seen an article about him taking too long to come back. No one on YES has even come close to suggesting anything like that. It’s certainly not here on the airwaves or floating around in the stands during games. The general consensus seems to be this might be a lost season for him and he needs to get surgery.

I’m sure the front office wants him back on the field because it’s been empty at the ballpark and they’re paying him a ton of money, but it’s not like he’s an attendance draw just being in the lineup.

Whatever. It’s not important. It just seems whenever his tweets or comments pop up it’s like the world is at his doorstep demanding him to get back on the field. I actually think the fans and media have been extremely patient to the point that he’s becoming a sort of forgotten man here like Arod in terms of the anticipation of his return.

We need him 100% healthy vs. LHP. At this point, that’s my only hope for him. I think Overbay hitting .327 against RHP w/a 944 OPS thus far makes Tex a platoon player on this team and waiving Overbay for Tex to test out his wrist for a couple of months would be a disaster of a move.

i think he’s doing more than you think. the mariners tend to win when he plays. i haven’t crunched the numbers lately but they don’t win much when he’s not in the line up. he’s paying his dues. it takes time . the kid’s 23.”

I still think there is a good chance he will hit…..but he’s not adjusting like you’d hope. He’s probably gotten into bad habits and can’t shake them……Safeco will cause youngsters to change to try and combat it

  144. G. Love April 30th, 2013 at 12:57 pm

    Shame,

I was stunned to see what Overbay’s #’s were vs. RHP thus far. At this point, there is really no reason to rush Tex back at all. That’s why I’m mind boggled over his tweet demanding “patience!” with an exclamation.

I actually would love someone in the Yankee media to write the article showing what Overbay is doing vs. RHP and compare Tex’s RHP numbers and let fans draw their own conclusion.

Not saying Overbay is going to do that all season, but it’s really impressive and helpful having a solid hitting 1b vs RHP right now.

  145. blake April 30th, 2013 at 12:57 pm

“Don’t forget, it isn’t that ‘he doesn’t need to’… the doctors flat out told him they won’t let him come back until he can swing a bat (violently as he does) and not feel any pain.”

So until he can swing violently and pop up to 2B he is shelved

  146. comnsnse April 30th, 2013 at 12:57 pm

Shame, I hope the Docs didn’t give Tex a slap on the wrist when he asked!

And on a serious note the Yankees should try to bring Montero back if possible.

I still prefer Youk at 1B and anything else we can come up with for 3B.

blake – Precisely. It’s a sad state of affairs when I’d prefer Alex return over Tex. His splits are at least better and the actual production (when extrapolated for Alex) is nearly identical.

“Baseball Reference shows that the Ms are 9-8 when Montero is in some manner involved in the game.”

Isn’t that partly because he’s catching Felix every time he pitches?

  159. yankeehotelfoxtrot April 30th, 2013 at 1:04 pm

    Indeed you did, Carly.

Let’s just sum it up: Tex plays very good defense, is mostly a stiff (especially against lefties), hits some homers against righties (assisted by the short porch), has greatly declined as an all-around hitter, is grossly overpaid, is a nice guy, is handsome with boyish good looks and seemingly good personal hygiene, fails at being a snazzy dresser, should probably have some kind of “revival” before it’s too late.

  161. blake April 30th, 2013 at 1:05 pm

Tex’s ABs are so predictable and that makes them annoying …..

  162. G. Love April 30th, 2013 at 1:06 pm

    comnsnse,

This season, for me, has been about seeing replacements for players too many people were making excuses for regarding their poor plate approaches.

We didn’t need stars to replace stars. We needed guys who didn’t play HR derby every at bat regardless of the situation.

If the injuries didn’t occur, we’d never have a 1b hitting like this vs. RHP for an entire month.

I don’t know if Overbay is stunned. He seems like a guy who wasn’t ready to face the fact that no team had a real role for him and he’s getting the job done.

Ideally, a platoon of him & Youk (vs. LHP) would be very solid at 1b if we had a good alternative at 3b.

The Red Sox honestly did the Yankees a favor releasing Overbay when they did. It’s only a month, but he’s getting things done vs. RHP and playing very good D. He doesn’t let many line drives near him get by and seems smoother at 1b in comparison to Tex. Overbay makes the D at 1b look easy like Cano at 2b in comparison to Tex who is great defensively but makes every play look hard when he makes it.

So it would be simplistic to say that the Mariners would have a winning record if they just played Montero in every game.

So how can they maximize this Montero winning trend?

Clearly the answer is that they need 5 Felixes with Montero catching every day.

He looked terrible last night. Without fail, he wod swing at the first pitch, which would inevitably be a sharp breaking ball down in the zone.

Trout did not look great, either.

You know that lineup will catch fire at some point. And although the team scored 8 runs (thanks to Pujols and Trumbo), stretches of that lineup looked absolutely lost at the plate.

  171. randy l. April 30th, 2013 at 1:56 pm

i have no doubt wedge noticed that when shoppach was playing a lot they were also losing a lot.

it makes no rational sense , but managers do tend go with players they win with even if that player isn’t doing great. at least good managers do.

it certainly doesn’t hurt montero that the mariners seem to win more when he’s in there.

bringing in young players is a process. teams that stay the course have a better chance of developing young players.

one of the problem the yankees have is that they don’t let young guys take the time they need to develop. yeah, winning is more important in ny than seattle, but one young player every couple of years is pretty much a necessity if the yankees are serious about development.

the rest of the team should ideally be strong enough to carry that one young player through the transition as he gets mlb experience.

I’ve been wondering why there hasn’t been more hype about Kyle Roller. His numbers are solid this year (.337/.390/.554 at Trenton) and have been at every level so far. I realize he’s not on the 40-man roster and the issue is more at third base than it is at first…my point is simply that he seems like a really good prospect that I’ve heard little/nothing about since camp broke.

I’m pretty sure by the end of the year he will have 20 hr and 75-80rbi. The rbi might be lower considering no one in that lineup is hitting save for maybe 2 players.

Pettitte would’ve sucked no matter who was behind the plate last night.

If the Yanks drop the next two / get swept by the Astros, they’re still on a 90-win pace.

If the Yanks split the next two, they’re still on a 96-win pace.

If the Yanks win the next two, they’re on a 102-win pace.

I think they’ll win the next two for a 16-10 April and 17-10 through the first sixth of the season with Sabathia not being as good as he usually is – that’s pretty good.

Look at it another way: if the Yanks drop two of three to the Astros, so what when they are 6-1 vs. Toronto so far and who the hell thought that the Yanks would do that? I would’ve been fine with 3-3 and thrilled with 4-2 considering Toronto’s offseason improvements. The Yanks will be no worse than 6-4 vs. Toronto and could be as great as 9-1 in the first ten meetings. 8-2 (Yanks take 2 of the next 3) would be nice because then Toronto has only 8 more cracks to gain ground facing the Yanks head to head after mid-May.

  214. Patrick April 30th, 2013 at 3:28 pm

you’re a reasonable and knowledgeable guy.

he was 22 last year and hit 15 homers and had 62 rbis

jr murphy is a guy i like a lot. i expect him to be catching for the yankees in the near future.

murphy is 22 and in double a. think about that. he’s a prospect and he’s montero’s age and he’s in double a.

age really matters for these guys. montero had an invaluable year last year. all kinds of positives were accomplished. it’s not just numbers .

ask yankee feminista about age and development.

  216. Patrick April 30th, 2013 at 3:38 pm
