Phil Hughes has his first win of the year, and he earned it. Through eight scoreless innings, Hughes struck out nine and allowed just four hits, beating the A’s 4-2 at Yankee Stadium. Hughes very nearly allowed a home run to the first batter he faced — Ichiro Suzuki made a jumping catch at the wall — but he went on to allow just one extra-base hit. He retired the last 10 batters he faced and has now struck out nine in back-to-back starts. As for offense, the Yankees got solo home runs from Chris Stewart and Lyle Overbay. They also got a double from Robinson Cano and a triple by Eduardo Nunez, each of which led to a run. Mariano Rivera was ultimately called in from the bullpen after Shawn Kelley allowed a leadoff single in the ninth. Rivera allowed a walk, a single and two runs before closing out the win without a save.
