Pregame notes: Joseph thrown into the mix

Corban Joseph [2]

Last time Corban Joseph was called up from Triple-A, he spent two days on the roster without getting in a game. This time he’ll be on the roster for one day, and he’ll play in two games.

Joseph is the 26th man. According to a new baseball rule, teams are allowed to add an extra player for doubleheaders. It must be the same player for both games, and that player must return to the minor leagues the next day. So Joseph is here for a few hours, and then he’ll be back in Triple-A.

I got to the park just a few minutes after Joe Girardi talked to reporters — the down side to flying in the day of a day game — but according to Jack Curry, Girardi said the Joseph will play first base in the opener and second base in Game 2. [3]I was told that Girardi also said none of the regulars except for Brett Gardner will play the field in both games. Robinson Cano will DH in the second game.

A few quick notes…

• For now, there is no Brett Marshall on the roster. The lineup card in the clubhouse lists Vidal Nuno as a starter, leaving the Yankees with six relievers for this game.

• Girardi indicated yesterday that he would likely have a starter on standby in case the team needs to make a move between games. I have to assume Marshall is in Cleveland, ready to be activated. Just speculating, but the Yankees could option Preston Claiborne, Shawn Kelley or Adam Warren to make room on the roster if one of those three is used up in Game 1. As I mentioned this morning, it’s worth remembering that Joba Chamberlain seems close to returning from his oblique injury, so it’s entirely possible that someone will be optioned in the next few days anyway.

• For several days now, Jayson Nix has had his left leg heavily wrapped. I asked him today what’s wrong and he dismissed it entirely. “Nothing,” He said. “Just keeping it warm.” I guess there’s a chance that’s true, but it certainly looks and sounds like a guy who’s playing through some sort of discomfort. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Alberto Gonzalez at shortstop for both games, with Nix playing third in place of Nelson in the second.
