Buehrle vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m., MY9

WEATHER: They just announced that it’s 69 degrees. Another great night for baseball

UMPIRES: HP David Rackley, 1B Rob Drake, 2B Sam Holbrook, 3B Joe West

PETTITTE TO THE DL: About an hour before first-pitch, GM Brian Cashman made the announcement that Andy Pettitte is being placed on the 15-day DL with a strained trap. Pettitte left his start early last night with back spasms, and now the Yankees are taking the cautious approach by DLing him.

MAKING THEM BLUE: The Yankees have won seven straight home games vs. Toronto, and 18 of their last 21.

NO MORE THAN TWO: The Yankees are one of only two teams this season that have yet to lose more than two straight games (also Texas).

(I’ll be updating what’s going on in the game here every so often, but I’ll be much more active on Twitter. Follow me @vzmercogliano to join in the conversation!)

UPDATE, 8:33 p.m.: The Yankees tack on a second run in the fifth on a sac fly from Nix. They also scored in the first after Gardner led off with a triple and came home on a Cano groundball to the right side. Meanwhile, Kuroda is cruising on the mound. He’s allowed one hit all game — a leadoff double to Cabrera in the first.

Go Hiroki san, Go Austin and David, Go Yankees!!

  2. MG May 17th, 2013 at 7:05 pm

I’m not surprised that Andy was put on the DL, he’s at an age where it’s better safe than sorry.

Nuno is an excellent fill in, he’s made a great impression so far and he’ll get a couple of starts to solidify his future with the Yankees…

  3. Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 7:06 pm

Ugh at that picture of Tex on the side of my screen….

    Go Hiroki!!

Also pretty convenient to have a lefty ready to replace Andy

    Let’s go Yankees!

I like Nuno a lot, he knows how to pitch and isn’t afraid to work fast and throw strikes…

  8. Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 7:11 pm

Will Nuno get/did he get a start in between being sent back down?

  9. Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 7:11 pm

Wait, never mind, he’s already been called up.. just BP?

Mick, consider that your posts and ridiculous certainty about Montero have become tiresome, but if it pleases you.
    =================
I am uncertain about Montero, whoever sent this, you might know who you are but I am not certain.

Talking about being buried in the standings this early in the year makes me laugh.. were these guys not watching when we blew a ten game lead last year?

Joe, I ended the last post with what’s happened to, Stan Jonathan.

  22. luis May 17th, 2013 at 7:20 pm

    Phew!!

    YF,

Kuroda’s Fb is up in the zone, slider has very little bite but the CB and the splitter are working… He will adjust… 2 k’s ( one with a hanging slider, the other one with a nasty splitter )… Inning ended with a line drive from Bautista that Kuroda caught ( on a Fb up )

  23. luis May 17th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

Gardy!!! a triple to start the inning

  24. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

Kay and his best friend Paul doing the game.

Kay: “We should get an eyebrow cut like Reyes.”

    Paul: “I hadn’t noticed.”

  25. jmills May 17th, 2013 at 7:21 pm

Joe, I hardly took you for a, Triumph fan! :D Rik Emmett is one talented soul.

  26. UnKnown May 17th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Yes Sir. Nice start. Score him now.

  27. Jerkface May 17th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Yankees normally crush Buerhle, good start. Please pile up the runs. Then maybe we can see Betances some :)

  28. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Nix with a man on 3rd again.

Lay off the high hard one..

  29. yankeefeminista May 17th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Shame, yes w/Yanks. Nvm i thought you meant minirs. Back to minor league game.

  30. Niblick May 17th, 2013 at 7:23 pm

Take that all you Gardner haters!

  31. yankeefeminista May 17th, 2013 at 7:23 pm

    Thx, luis.

  32. MG May 17th, 2013 at 7:23 pm

if the Yankees wanted to do something to generate interest in their broadcasts they should have Kay ready with Lohud quotes when he goes through the lineup.

‘Leading off for the Yankees, the center fielder, Brett Gardner, recently called a 4th outfielder by joeman while others called him gutty and gritty

‘Batting 5th, designated hitter, Ben Francisco, he’s universally hated by rabid Yankees fans and with good reason

    It would be epic…

  33. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

Cano is in a funk. Lay off that slop.

  34. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

    Bad hack. Good job.

  35. UnKnown May 17th, 2013 at 7:24 pm

Get one more this inning yet.

  36. UnKnown May 17th, 2013 at 7:25 pm

    Here comes Mark’s Daddy

  37. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

It’s funny how Francisco stays alive while minor leaguers come and go around him.
    It’s Houdini-like…

  38. luis May 17th, 2013 at 7:26 pm

    MG,

    Hilarious!!

  39. ObviousMan May 17th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

Actually, MG,that would get old pretty soon. Every day the broadcast would say, ” yankees lost a game this year. They must suck. Fire Cashman and Girardi.” That’s all you get out of this sorry excuse for a blog.

  40. Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 7:27 pm

It’s all good fem, I barely even thought out my question before asking lol. Obv he wouldn’t have pitched again in such a short time frame… that double header feels like it was weeks ago…

  41. Niblick May 17th, 2013 at 7:28 pm

I think he gets coffee for Joe.

  42. UnKnown May 17th, 2013 at 7:28 pm

  43. luis May 17th, 2013 at 7:28 pm

    Ugly hack from Wells

  44. UnKnown May 17th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

    It sure was Luis.

  45. ObviousMan May 17th, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Correction: sorry excuse for a message board. Nothing wrong with the blog. It’s the hateful negative fans on this message board that ruin lohud for decent, objective Yankee fans who want to watch the team play and not mucroanalyze every time Cashman or Girardi farts.

  46. jmills May 17th, 2013 at 7:30 pm

Mick, thanks for the music as usual. I used to have hair like that, now I’m stuck with the Steve McQueen look.

  47. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:30 pm

what will it take to get ben off the team.
    not tex, maybe youk.

  48. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

    isn’t queen, err mcqueen dead?

  49. ac1 May 17th, 2013 at 7:31 pm

Good thing they continue to bat him 5th

  50. MG May 17th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

Francisco missed that cookie that half of us could have put in play.

    He is really bad…

  51. Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

    Yay, OM is back…

  52. Nick in SF May 17th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

OK, that picture of Tex pimping the Juice Press™ while wearing a backwards SportsYapper™ cap is pretty awful and really makes me want to revive my “Tex-Strong — Until he beats the shift” wristband project.

  53. ObviousMan May 17th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

And the fact that the number of blog posts increases ten fold after a yankees loss goes to show what kind of “Yankee fan” posts here.

  54. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:32 pm

    unknown AND obviousman here together?
    is that even possible?

  55. Bo knows May 17th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

What the hell was that? What, they were going to hit eleventeen HRs?

  56. ObviousMan May 17th, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Clearly it’s Girardiis fault. Fire him and a hire a negative lohud poster to take his place.

  57. UnKnown May 17th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

I hope Kuroda is fine here. Looked awkward.

  58. Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 7:34 pm

What was Kay even talking about regarding the Yankees wanting Francisco to ‘be the hitter they know he can be’??????????????

  59. ObviousMan May 17th, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Yankees are a great team this year. The problem with this message board isn’t the yankees. The problem with this message board is the obsessively pessimistic and negative posters that have nothing better to do with their small lives than show up only tge yankees lose to complain a out Cashman and Girardi.

  60. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

    why is ben up 5th?
    3-16 vs buerhle ??

  61. Niblick May 17th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Benny’s gonna be off the interstate soon.

  62. ObviousMan May 17th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Obviously Francisco sucks. The posters on the Interbet said so. Screw the guys that actually get paid to manage the teams, it’s the losers posting on LoHud that know what they’re talking about, damnit!!

  63. jmills May 17th, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Mick, yes, Steve is quite dead ( in certain discussions ), but hair keeps growing when you die ( the self occupied part of me hopes ).

  64. luis May 17th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

    Nice bounce back inning

  65. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:37 pm

there is no way to get ben off this team.

  66. MG May 17th, 2013 at 7:38 pm

Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 7:34 pm
What was Kay even talking about regarding the Yankees wanting Francisco to ‘be the hitter they know he can be’??????????????
    —————————-
he isn’t this bad, no one can be and still play at the major league level…

  67. Nick in SF May 17th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

“What was Kay even talking about regarding the Yankees wanting Francisco to ‘be the hitter they know he can be’??????????????”

It’s kind of like when Elrond told Aragorn to put aside the Ranger and become who he was born to be with the key exception that Arogorn was born to be King of Gondor and Ben Francisco was born to be cut from this roster as soon as possible.

  68. ObviousMan May 17th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

    Mick,

Maybe if you fire Girardi Francisco will be replaced with mike trout:). That’s what Yankee trader and captain clutch told me

  69. Jerkface May 17th, 2013 at 7:39 pm

They want Ben to get back to being the .240 .285 .385 .670 hitter they know he can be!

  70. ObviousMan May 17th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

Clearly, nick from sc. You know best. And instead of focusing on the yankees 25-16 record or first place standing that nobody here predicted, lets obsess over the 25 th man on the roster who lohud doesn’t like. That sounds smart to me.

  71. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:41 pm

the fact that the network makes us listen to kay and paullie while a game is going on is a major distraction.

  72. UnKnown May 17th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

    unknown AND obviousman here together?
    ——-

Not sure what this is all about, but if it’s a shot at me I am not interested tonight. Pick on someone else. I am sure you won’t have a problem doing what you do and being that 3rd faction of Lohud.

  73. jmills May 17th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Luis, I take it your nice back bounce inning includes moi :)

  74. Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

MG, Nick, and Jerkface – Thank you all for the

  75. Shame Spencer May 17th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

    Nick is from South Carolina?!

  76. ObviousMan May 17th, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Jerkface is back! Yankees must have lost a game! Gotten cash and joe fired yet, her face? For a man if your intelligence, ousting idiots like Cashman and Girardi surely must be child’s at :)

  77. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

the 3rd faction of lohud….please explain.

  78. luis May 17th, 2013 at 7:44 pm

  79. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:45 pm

    what hurts luis?

  80. Nick in SF May 17th, 2013 at 7:46 pm

    “Clearly, nick from sc”

While I have enjoyed each of my visits to South Carolina, New York is where I’m from and San Francisco is where I now live.

But since you’re engaged, let me ask you a question. After one of your early appearances here (I mean appearances as ObviousMan), I described you as a malcontent. I’ve subsequently seen you use that very word to describe many of the commenters here that you rail against.

So my question is, did you adopt that word as an homage or just because of a limited vocabulary? Or both or neither, of course.

  81. luis May 17th, 2013 at 7:46 pm

    Wow..That was strike three

  82. mick May 17th, 2013 at 7:46 pm

maybe we should all leave obviousman here alone with him/herself?
    that would be interesting….

It finally makes sense! Fransisco is our lucky charm. Look at the teams that have either won or played in the super bowl. He can hit o from this point on. Would have preferres nick in sf to be that guy w no bat. We would have a better in than bobcat. Put we cam t cry over spilled captain crunch. #28 here we come!

  106. luis May 17th, 2013 at 8:04 pm

Thank God.. But Kuroda is flirting with disaster by leaving that ball up in the zone for Bautista

  107. GregD May 17th, 2013 at 8:04 pm

Shame— he goes thru spurts where he is and then falls back

  108. MG May 17th, 2013 at 8:04 pm

Adams really gets some air under his throws from 3B, was he a QB in college? lol

  109. Nick in SF May 17th, 2013 at 8:05 pm

So maybe they should give him an 8+ year contract so they can enjoy his Selective Years™.

ObviousMan, Thank you for describing yourself as decent and objective.

I’m glad you shared that with the rest of us.

I will give thanks for your presence on a venue of opinionated and indecent slugs who fail to understand your valued point of view!

I will attempt to emulate your wonderfulness!

  128. MG May 17th, 2013 at 8:17 pm

the Yankees usually get to Buerhle but he’s a good major league pitcher, he shut the Sox down in his last start.

You would think that Wells and Cano will both get a good rip at him the next time through the order, they’ve always raked against him…

  129. luis May 17th, 2013 at 8:18 pm

That’s a nice play Wells… Took it very deep

Bo and everyone now seems to know Cano is in a funk which is why I’ve said stats can sometimes be deceiving.

    Nice play Gardy!!

    Bo knows,

joeC, Buerhle succeeds with hitters trying to do too much wih him.

There is no secret, you take him up the middle or to the opposite field.

He is the guy you faced at any level who before every at bat you figured to crush.

And after you took a comfy 0-4 you were still shaking your head!

Unknown, on what basis is Romine better than Stewart?

Romine may be finding himself and justifying the organization’s faith and patience with him.

But Stewart has rendered great service. And how important has that been with Cervelli out after a good start.

Has our esteemed batting coach whispered sweet solutions in Cano’s ear yet?

This is the reigning star of this roster, they need him to show a little fire and be the best he can be all the time.

  251. mick May 17th, 2013 at 9:19 pm

It’s always a good sign when they don’t have to over rely on Cano.
    ========================
When you get pitching you can get away with crappy lineups.
    Francisco up 5th?
It’s like Joe doesn’t care and picks it from a hat like Billy once did.

  252. GregD May 17th, 2013 at 9:19 pm

I hope the Yanks have Romine in protective custody because if he gets hurt, we’re in deep doo doo

  253. UnKnown May 17th, 2013 at 9:19 pm

I guess I think Romine is better at defense and hitting than Stewart. Give Austin as much time and Stewart has had to find his groove and you will see that.

Like Rich said that is not saying much, but right now that is his only competition and he is a better player than that competition.

  254. Rich in NJ May 17th, 2013 at 9:20 pm

    What?

    You said:

Rich, honestly don’t you think you’re being disingenuous with that “necessity to not have to rely on Cano” comment?

    Re-read what I said:

“It’s always a good sign when they don’t have to over rely on Cano.”

    So I never said “necessity.”

To the contrary, I made an optimistic observation about the current lineup.

  255. mick May 17th, 2013 at 9:20 pm

It’s just a matter of time till Adams is in the middle of the order.

  256. GregD May 17th, 2013 at 9:20 pm

  257. jacksquat May 17th, 2013 at 9:21 pm

  260. joecembrale May 17th, 2013 at 9:21 pm

Its nights like tonight that irk you with Cano. I am trying to take the long view that his numbers will justify the contract. Its why i cant decide weather to give him the money. If he would just show the discipline and desire he showed in the WBC

  261. jackamir May 17th, 2013 at 9:22 pm

    Kuroda with a Masterpiece….

  262. mick May 17th, 2013 at 9:22 pm

Warren is this years 2012 Phelps.

  263. comnsnse May 17th, 2013 at 9:22 pm

joecembrale, Kuroda will not comeback if he does not retire for 10mm. when he’s making more than that this year.

The saving grace is he will work on 1 year deals and at this point it’s hard to argue he’s not the top of the rotation guy.

The Yankees may be in dire straits next year if CC is in decline and both Kuroda and Pettitte retire.

They sure aren’t going into 2014 with the likes of a Hughes as a #2.

You do realize that Musty can’t play SS, right?

  270. GregD May 17th, 2013 at 9:25 pm

Mick and Joe—–I think Warren has a great fastball and his off speed pitches have improved greatly

  271. mick May 17th, 2013 at 9:25 pm

sorry about your dad, i know the feeling.

  277. comnsnse May 17th, 2013 at 9:27 pm

GregD, count me as one who does.

Warren has better stuff than either Hughes or Phelps, although Nova has the best overall stuff if he could gain consistency.

Nuno could be a nice change of pace like a Wandy Rodriguez whose getting it done this year with the Bucs.

  278. UnKnown May 17th, 2013 at 9:27 pm

Notice how quickly teams ID a batters strengths and weaknesses. Adams can hit the fastball so they’ll work him with off speed and breaking pitches.

GregD have a great time at the game. Sorry about the passing of your Dad. I wouldn’t know what to do if I lost my Dad right now. Talking and going to Yankee games with him is the best thing ever. Have a great time tomorrow.

David Adams in 3 games played: 4 hits.

Ben Francisco in 21 games played: 5 hits.

He already play four positions and I think if the Yanks saw him as a middle inf, they already would have made him one. As for being the “next thing”, I don’t think so. He can hit a bit but has no real position and he’s a man (going on 29) playing with kids.

  316. comnsnse May 17th, 2013 at 9:48 pm

    Here’s something to ponder.

How many young pitchers are coming up to the bigs with fastballs in the mid to upper 90′s, while the Yankees seem to have a bunch who sit in the low 90′s like Hughes, Warren, Claiborne,Robertson with only Nova occasionally touching the mid 90′s.

I understand even their first round pick Ty Hensley stays in the low 90′s.

What makes it even more interesting is the organization has always looked for power arms.

Maybe Pineda and some others will be those guys, not that cheese is the end all but still interesting.
